The question is not "Do these large models understand?" but rather "How much do these large models understand?" I like to paraphrase Star Trek: "It's understanding, Jim, but not as we know it." You almost scooped the title of my book, Understanding Machine Understanding, that is coming out in November. In that book I go through the difference between knowledge and understanding, and why the industry should start measuring understanding.
