ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Patanjali Yoga Sutra # 2-9 थवरसवाही ववदषु ोऽवप तिारूढो मभतनवेशः॥२-९॥ Fear of death also leads to coloring of thoughts Even for those people who are learned, there is an ever- flowing, firmly established love for continuation and a fear of cessation, or death, of these various colored modifications (kleshas). || 2-9 || Simply saying, don’t fear death. The desire to cling to life is inherent both in the ignorant and in the learned. This is because the mind retains impressions of the painful death experience from many previous incarnations.

To me contemplating death is the body that resolves. The body heals itself in thee final bloom of dying..... For if the body were not to die, this would be as an existing tooth ache times 1000, therefore its final bloom is thee healing hand of consciousness, by its grace, by its grace, by its grace.

What it means to be free forever? Could consciousness give up experience? then what it could be conscious about? Is that state of no experience, eternal bliss? it's more like unconscious, not being aware of anything I myself think the liberation is like the expiration date of the temporary characters, memory and personality, you experienced it enough, that character and it's memory is kept in archive, part of the universal memory of our collective consciousness. So these tools and masks have time limit, but consciousness is always searching for new experience, that is the never ending game of living life, the desire to exist, being something out of nothing, it's the ultimate goal, not liberation from these dream worlds, that is the main story for ego to milk more experience out of these life journey and all of it's stories. Freedom from experience means state of non-dual, there is nothing to be aware of, no thought, no mind, nothing. there is no end to that as there is no experience of time. The only way is to keep coming back to dream worlds for more life experience, it's the only game (hide and seek) you have to play for eternity.

Thank you. I would be very interested to hear your views on Panpsychism and Idealism. I came to the conclusion that Advaita Vedanta is accurate through the use of the psychedelic substance DMT, but could not discern from my experiences between the two: Is material real and consciousness within all of material (including inanimate objects), which is Panpsychist views. Or is consciousness all there is and material an illusion within it (like objects in a dream would be an illusion), which is Idealist views. I wonder why on this sheet of everythingness we must materialize only as other living things. I felt, though of course I was tripping hard on DMT, that all of matter is what you refer to as Brahman (everythingness) and consciousness pervades the entirety of that matter, which includes every atom and molecule within it.

Swamiji, I have lately watched many of your videos, some of them over and over. It seems to me that you have only one fundamental teaching, that is "I am Brahman"." I am the all pervading consciousness in which my experiences arise and fall. As pure consciousness I am eternal, no beginning and no end" What concerns me is about the subtle body that has to take birth again and again, and enlightenment is the liberation from this very cycle. So Swamiji, are all subtle bodies must take rebirth, ate do some qualify freedom from rebirth and when we say there is suffering in this life, is it at the level of the subtle body and the Consciousness that we are is only a witness? Grateful, if anyone can clarify.
@duttakunal82
@duttakunal82 Жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right. In Advaita Vedantic theory, the subtle body is reborn. From the Absolute point of view, there is no subtle or gross body, the Absolute alone exists, so there is no question of birth, death or rebirth.

Hello swami ji. I have a question. Once our body dies, 1) our soul goes to another body. Who decides, in which body it will go ? In geeta c2.13 Krishna said once body die your soul go to another body. It can go in any body like tree, animal, insect or in any living body. If the karma decide for the soul for new body so, karma for an honey bee is collect honey and live is group . They do their karma. My means is only humans do pap and punya, not tree not ant not bee not snake. So what and who decide in which body your soul will go in which body. 2) All living body is creating another body like we birth our child. Are souls are infinite in numbers. Means today we humans are 15 billion on earth but 500 years ago humans were not in this quantity. All living creatures are increasing by time every second. So from where these extra souls are coming ? Seeking my answer. 🙏 Jay shree krishna. 🙏

Guruji pranam. 1.After getting enlightenment can we control our sub-conscious mind like total control over all vital organs. 2. Is there any connection between celibacy and neuron development in our brain. Since nothing goes waste in this universe, so if we preserve our seed in the form of celibacy how would it help in neuron development. I know its like any other desire which needs to be put away yet I want to know is there any other hidden reason. 3. Guruji I have given up my most of desires but one which is hunger. How could I win over hunger. I am finding this hunger major obstacle in pursuit of Nirvana or Brahman. I know I am Brahman but I want to experience it just like all saints did. Here by hunger and food I want stress on minimum amount of food needed for survival.

Please eat a healthy diet because we all love you! Perhaps one idea is to neither grasp at food nor push it away. Eating is a fact of life as long as we have a body so right thought, right attitude and right action toward food should bring right result which would be overcoming ignorance of how to eat for liberation. Just one humble thought. But however you work it out please eat a healthy diet with a happy spirit and respect for the resources that nourish you -- because we really are all in this together! Relax. Surrender is the shortcut to Nirvana, I have that on good authority. Blessings!!!

“Contemplating Death & Nothingness” In shadows I traverse, a soul torn apart, Where pain resides, and darkness grips my heart. Betrayed by those I loved, tormented and lost, I seek solace in battles, a war that'll exhaust. Within this shattered vessel, hope finds no place, Aching wounds within, despair etched on my face. I wander through the chaos, seeking redemption's light, But the weight of it all, pulls me deeper into the night. Like a lone sentinel, I step into the fray, Seeking fights to end it all, hoping to fade away. Refusing to break, despite the pain surging through, I yearn for a brave death, believing the ancient words true. "A Brave Death out weighs a bad life lived," it's said, But aren't all deaths brave, in some way, when life has fled? In the depths of this dark thought, a question does rise, What purpose does it serve, to seek a swift demise? For even in the darkest hours, light can still persist, A chance to heal, to mend what has been missed. In battles fought within, strength can be regained, And from the ashes of betrayal, a new life attained. So hold on, my weary heart, for you're not alone, Reach out to those who care, embrace the love they've shown. Though pain may cloud the world and cast a leaden hue, Choose to fight for hope, for your spirit to renew. Life's trials may leave scars, but they also can ignite, A flame within, a spark that burns ever bright. So let not despair consume, for within you lies the power, To rise above the shadows, in the darkest hour. Remember, my dear one, that your worth is innate, And each breath you take holds the promise of fate. Though struggles may assail, threatening to erase, You possess strength within that even death cannot efface. So let not the philosophy's words hold you bound, For life's complexity in simple wisdom can be found. Embrace the challenges, and let courage be your guide, For a brave life lived fully is where true strength resides. “ Still Contemplating Death & Nothingness” In the depths of contemplation, a thought takes hold, A whisper of mortality, a story yet untold. Sometimes, I find solace in the notion of my end, Embracing the embrace of nothingness, my friend. For within that void, a sense of bliss may bloom, Where worries and troubles meet their timely doom. No longer shall I yearn for the sun’s warming light, Nor crave the gentle breeze, embracing me with might. The songs that once stirred emotions deep within my core, Shall fade into silence, heard again no more. Oh, the vastness of the ocean feels shallow in compare, To the depths of contemplation, where I dare to stare. To think, my inner monolog shall cease its endless flow, Both terror and peace intertwine, lingering in my soul. Yet, in this moment of stillness, I reach beyond my self, Striving to understand the essence of nothing, pure and stealth. To exist without purpose, simply to just be, Dissolving into the void, embracing eternity. In these thoughts, I wander, seeking answers unknown, Exploring the vast expanse where solitude has grown. For in the midst of nothingness, I find my own release, An ethereal tranquility, bidding my mind find peace. So let the mind wander, beyond earthly realms and time, Embrace the ebb and flow, in this cosmic paradigm. By the New Aged Diogenes ( After Rehab )

Death is just turning the leaf of the mind to a new Drisya universe, Drashta remaining the same egoistic Self. It is all lined up in the mind in layers. You have been through countless layers before. You will keep going until you have lived them all out and finally with the end of the mind will remain in your true and infinite nondual Self. There's nothing out there. You are living your inside. Your mind and sense are fooling you by giving you the experiences of your inside as outside. A dream that consciousness is living in a mind posture.

So I'm not sure what the answer to the question.. why do I need a new body? i.e. Why does the underlying one-ness/consciousness require that the reflection (our subtle body + causal body) come to the Advaita/enlightenment realization.. otherwise, if it does not, it must continue to transmigrate to another body? BTW, Sadhguru suggests that once you make it to the age of 84, enlightened or not, your connection to the earth is sufficiently weak where you don't have to return after death! And upon death, how is your enlightenment judged? I get your unique perspective is a product of mind/body, the real thing is the underlying consciousness, so after enlightenment/death what will be your experience? Finally, what does this say about the purpose of one's life.. or ? Generating Karma, having no/kids, vocation / money, traffic, etc. Would love to see a discussion between Bernardo Kastrup and Swami Sarvapriyananda about the meaning if it all.. what is the one consciousness' goal, ex. Telos.

I don't know why but I think Swami ji was strangulated to death. Not sure who would do that and why though. Mahasamadhi theory is very hard to believe in

Soul and ego are the same thing. If the soul is real, the ego is real and if the ego is real then separateness is NOT an illusion it's a fundamental reality so if the soul is real then Vedantism is false. If the soul/ego is real THAT THOU ARE NOT.

soul and ego are not the same thing! where did you learn it from? Ego is what is called your subtle body(karmic bubble).It is the one that takes rebirth... Soul is eterna,l it was never born and will never die..It witnesses everything but is untouched and unaffected by everything.. Vedant is end of knowledge, It's the peak of knowledge.. nothing surpasses it

@@betelgeuse4187 Mya is fundamentally the illusion of SELF and OTHER. The boundary between self and other is the work of the soul. It is the soul that makes you feel cut off from God and gives rise to craving clinging and desire, the fetters.

Swamiji could not handle the question of understanding and contemplating death rightly, as he dealt only with negatieve side of death. According to Islam, death is the greatest gift of God to mankind, as it provides escape route from life sufferings, old and weak body, disease, pain and so on. If death does not come at right time, life savings will not be sufficient to live on. What the point in living in a body whose sense organs have become unfit to enjoy pleasures of the world, say sex and coitus. Swamiji has tried to comfort worried audience, saying your body will die but not you. It is laughing matter, as nobody knows real issue, although people are taking birth and dying since beginning of creation. Swamiji told that after death, person will get new human body. How could he say so, when Gita says a person depending on mental condition at time death could take birth as animals, reptiles or insects. He did not talk about the elaborate procedure described in Gita to die. He should have described it to make the audience aware of the fact that death is not as easy as it seems in ICU now a days, but it is actually a great examination, where to perform well, a person must prepare himself through mental and physical preparation for a long time, so that he could leave the body through top of head only and not through nine holes in the body to achieve salvation. The body is grave of soul according to Greek philosopher Plato.
