Now I learn chinese which gives acess to a different mentality only looking at the structure of grammar, completely different from english, french, german etc! Not long after Mr. Moser landed in China, I landed in the USA as a student, ultimately returning to Shanghai in 1995. Remarkably, I read Gödel Escher Bach in English (was a hot book in my Berkeley science circle) so it is most amusing to learn Mr. Moser translated it - sorry, have not read it in Chinese. The observation he shared regarding China has a completely different paradigm of and set of value relating to human/society/governance/etc. is very important, most Western countries are not aware that there are different possibilities of mankind, but addicted to a zero-sum game. Two comments: 1. when you praise/compliment a Chinese, he/she says nonononono, I am this or that not good, this is not sense of inferiority, but modesty required by Chinese culture; 2. CN gov never presents to the world that CN has only one voice/thought, diversity and differences between regions/ethnicities culturally, economically and politically are always acknowledged. There is great tolerance in China towards diversities (co-existing with the fact that it is an almost homogenous society w/ 92+% Han--the tolerance might be due to the long term co-existence and co-mingling of different races/origins/regions, the basic bottom line is you can do whatever, so long as you don't bother others.) The Western MSMs/thinktanks try very hard to depict China as a country having no freedom, particularly, no freedom of speech, freedom of religion etc., which are myths. If you go to any Chinese social media or wechat group, you'll see the diverse political views, criticism, insults of or even attacks on CN gov, views different from the official stances, but they won't be bothered at all unless certain redlines are crossed, typically relating to stability/social unrest/etc. Religions are freely practiced but they are not allowed to be used to organize crimes/incite social unrest or being used to interfere with Chinese internal affairs by external forces, religious groups are required to register according to law, also you are not allowed to preach to/convert minors (terrorist attacks in China in the past 30 years were always associated with people funded/directed by external forces), all adults can practice their religions openly/freely/lawfully. David's suggestion is valuable, i.e., have more ppl go over to get to know China (even from your treating China as a threat perspective)--if you know China well, you'd understand Chinese are inner focused, they don't like to expand territories to take on others' problems, they don't like wars let alone starting wars. So the Western accusations of China becoming a hegemon/trying to dominate etc. are pretty much BS. Chinese like to be left in peace, work hard and make money... Also the allegation that Chinese don't have values is false. If there is any value that is universal, this should be it: "don't do unto others what you don't want done to you" --all the rest is imposition of one group's value upon others. May there be understanding, mutual respect, equality, integrity of sovereignty and peaceful co-existence, may there be common development and common wealth for the mankind.

In this well written and seemingly reasonable post, the writer slides in a steaming pile, i.e. (para. 6 line 4) "China doesn't like to expand territory" Tibet, Vietnam, India, South China Sea, Taiwan, etc. (essentially most its neighbors) may have something to say about this. Furthermore, the mass push to build a military capable of taking Taiwan by force by 2027, Xi's words, not mine, show continued violent intent akin to Russia's attack on Ukraine. This post is an excellent example of the increased sophistication of the CCP narrative using the "two truths, one lie" method. I used to play this game with my Chinese students who were generally amazing wonderful people I'd like to add. My beef is with the CCP not the good ppl of China.

Educated Chinese understood that their country is one of the most diverse and multicultural in the world. They only have to talk to another Chinese from a different region and be reminded, if they needed to be reminded, that even the Chinese language is highly diverse. I would love to learn more about the "different concepts of Chinese human nature", about "the different starting off point for ethics " and about how Chinese perspectives challenge "Western perceptions". I also think we in the West have a lot to learn about how to build a culture and a people who can work as one. I would love to learn more about this. To be honest, these were the subjects I thought I was going to get a glimpse of in this video, but the interviewer's questions were too basic for the interview to get anywhere. If anyone out there can offer books, podcasts, or videos on the above, I'd appreciate the recommendations.

It is not just the Chinese who have a civilisational concept of unity amongst their peoples. The ancient Indian and Chinese civilisations were deeply interconnected and much of the Indian Vedic works were preserved in written form by the Chinese. Confucianism was born in China from these extensive interactions. A lot of this material was lost in India from successive invasions from the Turks, Afghans, English, Portuguese, Dutch and French who came to plunder and conquer. The loss of Nalanda University in India, for example, was incalculable to human civilization. But China was able to recover later from the devastation of the odium trade. India’s recovery has been a lot slower.

The chinese believe that as long as that authoritarian figure protects them, and allows them to live a life that is safe and have the oppurtunity to have a family, home and earn their living, they will support that authoritarian figure, they are willing exchange some individual freedom for them. They are a communal society and community and nation trumps individual needs. The PRC just needs to tear down the firewall and allow the people to connect directly without government concerns. Years ago I had an online tutoring exhange where was offering free English conversations in a exchange for free Mandarin lessons anonymously. VERY difficult for me to do that these days.

I appreciate the earnest attempt he makes at balance and generosity in his answers to the questions, but my experiences in China have taught me most fundamentally that China under its current leadership is a threat to Western hegemony.
