I recently started voulenteering at a local cat-shelter and one of the cats wouldn’t eat. She was rather thin, so we needed her to eat. She was very beautiful (especially to the other cats), who would leer at her, and it would upset her, but omigosh, how she was talkative! I figured that she might be a “social eater”, and I sat next to her for a good half hour, while she slowly ate. She was very soon adopted by some people who has experience with cats. So happy for her! In my very short experience with cat mothers, those who trust the people at the shelter, often go and eat or litter, whilst we’re in their cages. Edit: I’m no expert, but my theory is, that the “social eaters” don’t want you there to watch THEM eat, but rather watch out FOR them; they might’ve had bad experiences with being chased away from food, so now they feel like they need a bodyguard.

Oh man, I could have used this video a year and a half ago when I took in my cat, who was a stray I took off the street. She was skin and bones, and it felt like she wouldn't eat! Turns out she's just highly self-regulating, and just eats when she's hungry. Took me a year of worrying to figure that out. She's perfectly healthy now, a purrfect weight, and quite the lap cat. :3

I have one cat who will eat almost everything if it is out and another who is picky (surprisingly that is a young orange cat) I will say the part about a drastic drop in eating is absolutely a red flag to get to the vet. My first cat that I owned and took very good care of at 1 years old just stopped eating...Took him to the vet and as soon as the vet looked at his gums (I didn't know at the time but yellow gums are a bad sign) and made a remark that while not truly answering anything...I knew. I left him at the vet and started crying while driving home and my GF at the time asked why I was so upset. I told her even though the Vet didn't say it...My buddy was dying and I knew it. He lasted about a month...had a tube in his neck for meds...His liver was simply not doing what it should. I tried everything despite making very little $$. Took him to have an ultrasound, got him on the best meds available...But sadly nothing available to vets was going to save him. The vet told me it wasn't anyones fault and no matter what the cat would of had this happen cause of a bad genetic roll of the dice. It hurt more that he was only one years old...a kid you know? You will hear people say things in a negative manner like "Oh, you care about animals more then people ...why? Cause they look cute?" (Had a coworker say "But, it's just a cat.") They miss the point...it is about the INNOCENCE. No different then when people tend to have more emotion when a child is hurt then when an adult is...It isn't simply about the age...It is about the Innocence. Animals carry that through their lives and it breaks my heart when that is torn from them by abuse, disease etc. Anyway, finally gave the ok to put him down cause it was obvious all that was happening was prolonged pain without any indication it would lead to him getting better. Went to the vet and they gave us the room (My GF at the time) with my buddy (Miu-Miu) and we just petted him...He tried to walk and fell over and was having a hard time breathing (And now tears are flowing down my face, not sure why I went down this road) So I didn't spend to much time knowing he was suffering....Bent over, kissed him and told him he was the best cat I ever had the pleasure of knowing and I thanked him for that...😢 Anyway, the vet gave him a shot of barbituates and he was out within seconds...no more pain. I have two cats and one is a senior...I dread when his time comes but I will make sure I am by his side when it does....I don't care how much it hurts me...Any animal I own will not leave this life without me by his side. I literally never cry....Idk what it is about animals...I love that they bring so much joy and hate that they leave. Sorry...Rant over.

About 6 months ago me and my husband got an about 10 year old rescue cat who wouldn't eat unless I sat next to her on the floor. Her previous owner had abused her and from what I've heard pretty much left her locked up in a room with a bit of kibble and a litter box :c Now that she's learned to trust us and knows we give her yummy wet food three times a day she eats some of her breakfast while I sit next to her and sip my coffee, and when we eat dinner she'll go and eat some of her food next to us, a nice little family dinner 😊 Because she's the first cat I've ever had, I was worried when she didn't eat all of her food at once, so this has helped ease my nerves about that 😅 I love watching these videos, you have such a calming presence and I love to see how you interact with your cats, keep up the good work 😊😊

Our cat had a rough start in life and is food obsessed! I spotted a skinny kitten all alone in a drain and kept checking on him every day to see if he had a mom or siblings, but he was all alone. I fed him and eventually took him home. He grew into a loving and adorable cat, but we can’t leave food out for him because he would NEVER stop eating. We have to keep the kibble locked away because he will slash the bag with his claws and just gorge. He tries to break into our larder and even got into the bread bin and ate a bagel. 😳 We love him very much so we keep a close eye on him and make sure he doesn’t overeat.

I have had many cats in my life but I have *never* known a food obsessed cat like my Manx calico. She’s also a rescue who won’t eat unless I’m in the room...but oh boy does she just beg for more food all the time. Your description of being led to the room where she eats is so spot on, but Jill takes it a step further and comes up to actually tap me on the shoulder or face gently with her paw if I’m not listening to how she’s starving because it’s been an entire hour since she gorged herself. I am REALLY ooking forward to that video on obesity in cats.

Every cat and every dog I’ve had had food available 24hs for them and they never ever over ate. They all had that intelligence. I’ve had poodles, street dogs, pitbull, rottweiler, poodle with Maltese, tabby cat and Persian cats. I believe it’s a matter of how they’re raised. If you leave food for them since they’re a baby, they’ll learn that there will always be food and they don’t need to over eat. However... regarding the cats that only eat when their owner is around, I’ve had a cat like that too 😂.

Couldn't have nailed it better. I have an orange cat, that is male, is a rescue, that is food obsessed. He is overweight and has no nutritional intelligence. I have portion controlled him, however too late. He was thin when I got him. He is still the second best cat I have ever owned the first was a kitten I raised from birth...she passed away decades ago. I have had Ready for 4 years. He gets my attention in the morning by stomping on my head to wake me up to feed him. I know I shouldn't feed him as that encourages this behavior because he is getting his way, but I love him too much to deny him anything. I made a promise that I would make his life the best it could be because he had gone through tough times being a rescue.

Dr. Uri, thank you for your amazing, gentle channel. Our beloved 17-year old girl has had some frightening health issues this year (including GI lymphoma, as we learned last week). There have been so many tears, but your videos have been an oasis of smiles, calm, and lifesaving tips. Lots of love and warmth to you and the cats! :3

Omg! My Tristan is orange boy cat and he is obsessed with food and eats until he vomits. He only vomits on my bed or the bathroom rug.

On the subject of feeding - a little story. A couple of years ago we took over a cat - no particular breed, but it does have at least some Norwegian forest cat dna. The previous owner wasn't able to give this particular cat an environment it enjoyed, so it had been running away a lot, wasn't in the best state of health and had started top become a tad skinny. When it got home to us, it adjusted very quickly, and was out and about exploring the house within a couple of hours. And it was ravenously hungry, in those first few days it would eat anything at once - and it even tried clawing it's way into the dry food bag to get more. So clearly a malnourished cat, with a strong desire to eat up quickly. We did limit food supply somewhat though, so it couldn't eat completely freely, and established a routine of feeding it twice a day to keep the amount under control. Just about two years later the cat is now a happy and self-regulated eater. He is out hunting a lot, some days he will only eat tiny amounts of food inside more or less for the habit of it, presumably the days when his hunting has been more successful than average. Rodents and birds are the staple of his outdoors menu, and as far as bought food is concerned tuna is the favorite. If something is really, really tasty he will eat it all at once, presumably overeating in those specific cases, but otherwise regulating quite nicely. The weight has stayed the same for the past year and a bit, perhaps increasing ever so slightly as he appears to become a bit more muscular being out a lot, especially in spring, summer and autumn. If our approach was the correct one I can't tell, but he is behaving like a cat should now as far as eating is concerned, which is what matters in the end I guess.

I love these videos! What lucky cats to have such an owner! He calms me down with regards to my cats health. My scamp regulates herself (thankfully! Because I feel bad if her bowl isn't half full at all times), she'll even wait half a day and cuddle to get treat treats instead. She's so smart. A cuddle here, a sand paper tongue kiss on my nose and ache gets treats. She regulates herself on those, too. She'll hide em under her blanket and I'll catch her munchin and just laugh.

Our rescue cat also comes several times a day and during the night to get us to stroke him while he eats. Thank you so much much for this valuable insight into our beloved little boy. Your insight and compassion mean the world to us and help us help him.

My cat used to require physical contact in order to eat. I adopted my cat Dexter 2 years ago. He came from an abusive background and suffers from ptsd. We know a little about what he went through but not the whole story. For the first 4-6 months, he would only eat if one of us pet him. As soon as we stopped petting, he would stop eating. Poor Dexter also had teeth problems and has food allergies, feeding was not a fun time for him. We kind of had to teach him how to be a cat. After addressing his health issues, he eventually learned how to trust us and be a cat again. Dexter is doing great now but still seems more comfortable eating if someone is in the room with him. I love seeing him relaxed, he had a tough life so seeing him happy, safe and in a loving environment makes me thankful that we gave him a chance when everyone else thought he was broken. Now he sleeps in a warm bed, has a favourite window perch and loves chasing toy mice around the house.
