I have the min kota riptide Terrova on a tracker v-16wt. I've used it to 1 year. It is amazing. I troll by myself slot. I adjust the speed and set a heading. Now I'm able to put my trolling lines out without trying to keep the boat on course. When I hook a fish it allows me to fight the fish without trying to control the motor. If I hook a large fish I dial the speed back after hookup and reduce the effort to land it. I use spot lock in areas with heavy current. Anchoring in heavy current by yourself can be very dangerous and by the time the anchor sets your usually not where you want to be. This motor is incredible. It's totally changed the way I fish. I increased my catch rate significantly by using it in the past year. I'm out fishing the boats around me . It's a total game changer.

I've got a terrova with ipilot link and helix 7. I cast docks so following contour (shoreline) is awesome. Only complaint, if I manually take over to avoid an object, pick a snag, or spot lock to catch a fish...there really should be a resume button. I have to go from front deck back to counsel to reprogram. Resume would be nice.

I put Ulterra with i-pilot link and Helix 7 on my river boat for fishing big rivers. One issue I have found is that many features like cruise control and auto pilot don't operate well when I have boat pointed into the current (as it usually is) and fishing as we drift downstream. I would love to be able to set a speed and distance from shore (similar to lake contour) and have the motor be smart enough to simply slow the boat's drift and bump me in or out based on shoreline. Admittedly, I am still learning a lot about what it can do, but I haven't figured out how to do anything like this yet. I usually just have to do it all manually and then lock spots I like. Just a thought for the next generation
@muskietime2 жыл бұрын
Probably 15 years ago, I owned a Pinpoint Trolling Motor which did as you asked: You could set the Distance from Shore. Plus, you could Set the Depth after “teaching it” which side of the motor was closest to shallow water. Unfortunately, most shorelines are irregular (docks, underwater boulders, fallen trees...) and the motor would “correct” for what it saw as the shoreline. The Depth Contour was good but would get really confused with inside or outside turns. Perhaps in the future they can figure this out by scanning further ahead. I was told that the Pinpoint had five transducers built into the unit!

I just picked up a used boat with various Humminbird Helix screens and an Ulterra with I-Pilot Link, so I'm just starting to figure it all out. But the VERY FIRST THING I noticed was the placement of the buttons on the Link remote. The non-Link remote has buttons on the bottom so you can see the screen above. Plus, any phone in texting mode has the buttons (keyboard) on the bottom, where your thumb naturally is when you hold it. I think buttons on the top was a bad choice.

I recently purchase a Minn Kota Powerdrive with I-Pilot. From the beginning the spot lock has not worked. I hit the anchor button and the motor sits for a second or two and then revs up to 8 or 9, moves off the spot 100 ft and turns off. I have adjusted the boat scale down to -2 to compensate for my smaller boat and still the same result. Minn Kota has told me I need to test my batteries under load. The batteries are brand new. I have 2 12V in series. Output is about 12.8V.

@principleoutdoors89322 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian..You can buy a new iPilot "Link" kit which will replace you're iPilot controller. Very easy to do on Terrova...less easy with PowerDriveCost is about $650 USD so most people find it more cost effective to sell their motor and buy a new Link motor.

A great video, I put fishing aside for the last 12 years. Prior to retiring last year, I wanted to upgrade my 16 foot Deep V Tracker with a new trolling motor. I admit I didn't do a lot of research but did ask a lot of questions at Cabela's. Based on their info I bought the Ultrex I Pilot 80#. Due To health reasons, I was unable to put the boat in the water until September of this year. I bought a new Helix Humminbird Chirp GN3 gps Mega SI. I love the combination, but first time out the transducer didn't work on the boat. I was told to switch the Y cable around which fixed the boat transducer but now it seems that the trolling motor isn't working on the down imaging. Now I'm laid up until next year but am wondering if I was sold the wrong cable. Any info would be helpful, so I get it all working before next year. If the salesman would have talked more about the I Link system that is what I would have gotten. Pays to Reseach more thoroughly, but I'm sure I'll be satisfied once things work as they should. Spot lock is amazing.

Two things you didn't touch on. What is pause and resume used for? When I'm on contour follow and I catch a fish I hit spot lock but the problem is that I want to resume my follow contour I can't unless I go through all the screens to start contour follow again. I once had Pin Point troweling motor and any time I hit pause all I had to do to resume was hit one button on the side of my foot control. This would also let me reverse direction but hitting one button on the side. I find it hard to believe that there isn't a simpler way to resume contour follow. I have a ultera troweling

Couple of things to keep in mind...there are thousands of Ulterras out there...if there were consistent problems, it would no longer exist. So far (after 2 years), I absolutely hate my Ulterra. Here's why: 1. Spotlock is an awesome feature, but the motor (when rotating) is ridiculously noisy. It works great out on the main lake with any wind because the motor will simply face the wind direction and run continuously to keep you in place. The HUGE problem is when I'm in an area with no current and no wind (like a cove). The moment I hit the spotlock, the motor goes berserk trying to stay in that one spot. The prop will come on at a high enough speed that it pulls itself off the location and then turns 180 degrees to get back on that spot again. It's too stupid to work slowly work back to the spot. It goes back and forth over and over again and the motor noise (not the prop) is crazy loud. It over rotates and binds up in the cables and will eventually stop working and I float off my spot. It's frustrating beyond words and I know it scares off my fish because I've seen it many times. Me swearing at the trolling motor at the top of my lungs doesn't help either. 2. The foot pedal is absolutely worthless. It's a terrible design. There's no way you're standing up and using this pedal to navigate around to fish. 3. I have nearly been thrown from my boat on countless occasions because the spotlock feature decides to run 90 degrees at full prop speed without warning. Minn Kota - I applaud the effort, but please come up with something better. This was a absolutely horrible investment of 3 grand.
@principleoutdoors89323 жыл бұрын
You should share your comments with Minn Kota...have you taken it to a service center yet?
@scottperkins47903 жыл бұрын
@@principleoutdoors8932 I don't think there's anything for them to service. It's simply the way the motor is designed. I've had 2 of them and they both behaved the same way.

@@scottperkins4790 But how do you explain the 1000's that don't have this issue
@waynejohnson49413 жыл бұрын
@@scottperkins4790 You should re-read the manual on using spot lock. It explains the way to use it without all the gyrations you describe. I usually try to sneak up on my spot so that the boat is moving very very slowly.. Activate spot lock and it will generally stay right there. If you approach too quickly, you will float past the spot and the boat will violently turn to get back to the spot. If you go past quickly,, the motor will react just as quickly to get back to the spot. Could put you in the water if you are not prepared for the change in direction. Hope this helps.
@chachi59752 жыл бұрын
There's a setting for the size of the boat on the spot lock. I had the same problem. If I remember correctly there's a +2 or 2 if you have a really heavy boat which would require more thrust to keep it in place. For me I had to go -2 so the motor was more delicate when holding a position. I hope that helps 🙂🎣 I just noticed that it's called "boat scale"kzbin.info/www/bejne/bILClICDottmq5o

I have the powerdrive v2 and was looking at the upgrade system for changing it to i pilot what are your thoughts on that
@principleoutdoors89323 жыл бұрын
Any upgrade to iPilot is great, even if just for Spot Lock. Keep in mind that if you do the upgrade on a PowerDrive , you can't still use the pedal. Also, the cost is about $400. Depending on budget, it may be better to sell the PowerDrive and buy a new motor withiPilot pre-installed

No but you can point the motor in the direction you want to go and it will hold that heading

I need help finding what we need for adapter from helix 7 g3n to the terrova ipilot. AND what do we need for extra cable from helix to terrova? Also, when we try to do a record on our i-Pilot it says it saves but when we go to I tracks it says that record isn’t as long as what it recorded. So we record 1.8 sq miles and when going to I track it says it’s only 800 feet. Any help with why it isn’t working???

Very helpful video. Thanks! What is the difference between a route and an itrack? Can you plot a route and then have mine kota trolling motor do a "go to" so it follows the route? How many points can be in an I track?. I heard that the itracks use to be six tracks at 2 miles each. Maybe that was just iPolit. Is the new ipolit 66 tracks at 2 miles each or is it less?
@principleoutdoors89322 жыл бұрын
Thanks! A route is created on the Humminbird for boat navigation. An iTrack is created with the iPilot motor for the motor to follow.Yes you can create a route on the Humminbird and have the iPilkot follow it, but this is a lot of work. Always easier to press record iTrack and do the route you want, then it will be in the memory. Regular iPilot is still 6 iTracks, iPilot "LINK" is 66....you now owe me some Tapas and wine LOL

@principleoutdoors89323 жыл бұрын
The Helix 7 needs to be a G2N, not G2. From there it connects via ethernet cable form motor and an AS EC QDE adapter

Hello, I enjoyed the information in your video. I just bought my first boat and the seller tells me that the trolling motor and hummingbird are hooked up. If want to switch out the hummingbird for a new one do I have to change out the transducer or are they universal being the same brand?
@principleoutdoors89322 жыл бұрын
Thanks TJ...hard to answer that question without all the details. Minn Kota has motors with three different types of transducers. If the motor is 5-10 years old it is probably a US2 (2D) transducer and that will work with most Humminbird

From what I've read from customers the spot lock feature is really only good if the wind is blowing hard and it's useless under a bridge cause can't get signal don't know if I was a spend that kinda of money on something that's only good if wind is blowing hard which would be nice but not worth 2or 3 grand in my opinion
@principleoutdoors8932 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be fooled by people who make claims while being pro staff for other brands. The bridge thing, never tried it but the wind does not have to be 2-3 mph for spot lock to work. Denny Brauer just said on Mercers Podcast that spot lock was one of the biggest technological changes in bass fishing. I believe him more than most, along with my hands on experience with spot lock

Quick question, please. Will the I-Pilot Link and Hummingbird combo, allow the trolling motor to go directly to a way point that is stored. For example, if you're using Silesian and mark a brush pile. Will the trolling motor go to the exact way point and hold its position? Thanks in advance

You can tell the motor to go to a waypoint that is on the Humminbird. You will have to be within a certain radius of that waypoint though...2 miles I believe

Thanks Adrian. You will have a pedal and remote with the following motors...Terrova, Ulterra, Ultrex. Not with PowerDrive. I haven't tried back trolling but You can set the speed of the boat to be a bit slower than the current and it should keep the nose pointed upstream as you move downstream, back end first.
