Fun linguistic fact: the e→ie and o→ue changes come from a historic sound change from Latin to Spanish! In Vulgar Latin (the spoken vernacular that was the basis of the Romance languages), vowel length was developed. The Vulgar Latin short E and short O, when stressed, evolved into IE and UE in Spanish. This is how, for example, "petra" became "piedra", "festa" became "fiesta", "bonum" became "bueno", and "porta" became "puerta". This was a regular and largely systematic change, known as "vowel breaking". In Spanish, it happened in both open and closed syllables (open=ending in a vowel; closed=ending in a consonant), whereas in Italian, it happened only in open syllables (so, for the above words, Italian has "pietra" and "buono", but "festa" and "porta"). In Portuguese, this change didn't happen at all (pedra, bom, festa, porta). This vowel change only happened when the vowel was stressed, which is why, in Spanish, the nosotros and vosotros forms of stem-changing verbs don't have the change (V.L. pensAmus → Sp. pensamos, pensAtis→pensáis; but pEnso→pienso, pEnsas→piensas, pEnsat→piensa, pEnsant→piensan).

One thing I learned while learning Spanish is that even with verbs you may never have seen before you can instinctively know whether it is a stem-changer or not. Check in the dictionary anyway to be sure and if you find you’re right it really boosts your confidence.

i dont understand one thing. in another video of yours "decir" is also a stem changing verb which has 2 syllables which we are gonna change the first vowel which is an "e". we changed that e letter to "i" letter. but in this video, perder is also has the same things so i thought we are gonna make perder`s e to i. just like with decir, but we didn`t. what is the difference? thank you and i love your classes.

hi everyone, im studying the word empezar and comenzar. i noticed that in the conjugation, in a sentence you need to use the letter ''a'' before the verb for example: '' empienzo a entender'' i noticed that this verb you need to add the word a like in the verb ''ir'' : voy a comer''. are they more words that act like this, and if you know the reason and if there is a rule for it. muchisimas gracias :)
