Then this video should not be called "Understanding Islamic prayer" but understanding Shia prayer, because this is not the Islamic Prayer. Shia only make up 10-15% worldwide, and are not considered the mainstream of the Muslim Ummah. So a bit surprising, but whatever.

SOC 119 My friend, I claim that God sent down only one religion, and that is Islam. In Islam, God tells us to pray and the Prophet (pbuh) tells us how and when to pray. therefore anything type of prayer instead of the Islamic prayer that a human prays would be nonsense. Regarding to speaking on behalf of a billion muslims, I think that I came with a good and a logical argument and all of the Muslim scholars agree with. No muslim scholar will say "pray however you want". And God tells us if we want good information of Islam, we should seek in the best of our ability for people of knowledge to get the correct Islam, not all muslims are knowledgeable. Besides I think that the Iraqi guest got to liberized that he is afraid to say truth and say "no, you can't pray however you want," because he may gets judged. and that my opinion. if you want to pray in a mosque the way you want, go ahead. however I'm just saying that it would be meaningless to God because the fact that you're not praying the right way and you're not even a muslim.

SOC 119 Nice preaching but in our religion, if you're going to make a claim you need to bring proof. It's only logical, SOC. If you can pray however you want, what's to stop you from marrying however you want? And eating however you want and drinking alcohol and smoking however you want? Logically there would be no difference in any religion so what is then the point? There must be distinctions as this is only logical so you are very wrong about this.

Not folding the hands is completely disallowed as we see from these 2 hadith: It was narrated that Sahl ibn Sa’d (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The people were commanded to place the right hand over the left forearm when praying. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 707. It was narrated from Waa’il ibn Hujr (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) raising his hands level with his ears when he started to pray and saying takbeer, then he wrapped himself in his garment and placed his right hand on his left. Narrated by Muslim, 401

Just want to say something to some of the Muslims who are commenting on this video. It might be valuable to remember that there are over one billion Muslims on the planet along with countless ideas about Islamic rituals and beliefs, including how to pray. With this in mind, it might behoove you to think that perhaps YOUR way is not THE way. There are thousands upon thousands of immensely smart and qualified Islamic thinkers who could make brilliant arguments that undermine most of what you believe related to how to be a good, faithful, and correct Muslim. If you loosen up in your assessment about your own intellect and your own correctness, you might find the "Straight Path" to be less rocky and filled with more sincere and thoughtful connections with Allah. Isn't it much better that the Muslim students and the professor in this video gave the 800 students in the class an opportunity to see Muslims as kind, thoughtful, and devoted people? Does it really matter that someone left off a word in a prayer or didn't translate it the way you do or didn't hold their hands like you do? The students in the class don't care about these things. What they care about is that some of their classmates are Muslim and now that they have some kind of vision of Islamic prayer, they can see their Muslim classmates in a more open-hearted way. That is a win for humanity.

you're right. many people are quick to judge others while forgetting to question themselves. if i see someone praying in a manner that is not exactly the same as mine, i shouldn't assume that he is praying wrong. rather i should wonder if maybe i've got it wrong, or maybe his way is also a legitimate way. we have this in islam, where there are multiple correct ways of doing things. so there are many noticeable variations in the way muslims from around the world pray. but there are too many people who see something unfamiliar and assume it is wrong or even evil.

Ok, I appreciated the video but this comment is ridiculous. No, there aren’t thousands of ways to pray. There’re a few minor differences which, often, the laymen don’t even know about. But largely our prayed is the same. You may have recorded a video about the prayer, but in no way does it give you a right to talk about Islamic Jursiprudence. These matters are taught over years by qualified scholars in traditional settings, and a basic prerequisite of such study is advanced knowledge of the Arabic language so that one may analyse the primary sources of Islam. I appreciate that this sociology teacher is showing this to respect other religions and that the Islamic prayer to god and place for worship was enlightening and peaceful. I just want to clarify that many that are commenting on the wrong way of prayer and call for prayer are just advising as it is our obligation to correct when we can. Especially on situations like our prayer to God because that will be the number one obligation to God which he will judge us on in the after life. Our prayer to God is a big connection to him. Find Out after reading this article I think I was in the wrong and should have read up on the subject. @Zaynab Pizza The arms technically are considered correct by many. That is the way that Imam Malik رحمه الله would pray, and his opinion is widely considered a valid and acceptable one. Just because followers of the Maliki madhab don't fold their arms, doesn't mean they are not praying correctly. It just means that they follow the opinion of a different scholar, which is wholly acceptable in Islam.

There is no mention in the Hadith about how he would hold his hands, nor is there any verbal direction from him to hold your hands a certain way. The way the hands are held is not one of the fardh foundations of Salah. And Allah knows best.

There are many rules in prayers regarding the ways how to keep/see hands, feet and eyes.All one have to learn. Rules are little different for women. Adherence with timing for five times a day prayers is important.

Need a barrier between people praying and audience or face different direction away from audience- why because we bow to Allah not to people. We want prayers to be accepted. 4. There are many ways of prayer bcs there are different mazhabs ( like Imam Shafiee , Imam Maliki , Imam Hanafi ) for me , i follow Imam Shafiee and people may choose which mazhab they would like to follow , and theres no such thing as wrong prayer bcs we cannot judge whether a prayer is wrong or correct or is even accepted , bcs the one who judges is Allah s.w.t . When you go to Makkah/Madinah , youll see muslims praying differently but we are all the same , we are all muslims , we obey one God , the prayer is accepted when someone does it from the heart , sincerely for Allah s.w.t . So , we cannot judge other mazhab’s way of prayers , or say tt their prayer is wrong .

Okay so yes it’s not exactly a great thing to be overly critical and indirectly or softly bashing the efforts demonstrated in this video. whether it’s the prayer demonstration/method, the translation by the one person etc. But all in all, this type of recognition and acknowledgement of Islam is welcome, because there isn’t any bias, there isn’t an extremely dangerous misrepresentation happening. With all that being said, It’s also not exactly a bad thing to clarify some areas of this video that have clearly caused dispute and debate in the comment section. From what I Noted down I noticed the following. 1- that call for prayer was inaccurate. There are two calls for prayer, one that indicated the start of the time period for any given prayer of the day. For example Dawn prayer is at 5am, so the initial prayer that calls to announce the start for that prayer’s time period will be at 5am. ( prayers have time periods to perform the prayer in, the periods of time are the time differences between each prayer of the day) example: dawn prayer period starts at 5am and runs through till next prayer which is at 1:30pm. Midday prayer period starts at 1:30pm and runs through till the next evening prayer which starts at 5pm and so on for all 5 prayers of the day. Each of these prayers are meant to be performed within those time periods. If you miss a prayer and the time of the day is that of another prayer, priority goes to the prayer of which time period you are in. So if it’s 2pm and you missed your morning prayer you pray the midday one then make up for the earlier one. The initial call for prayer at those times mentioned in the example above is slightly different than the call for prayer mentioned in the video. There is another call for prayer very similar except it’s is a slightly shorter version of virtually, the same words said immediately before performing the prayer itself, the person in this video that said the prayer call made his own version of the two prayers mixed together. Again not the biggest issue in the world, but a very awkward mistake that you expect a child or ‘ rookie ‘ would make. 2- the prayer Imam in this instance ( person leading the prayer, guy in white ). First of all, he performed it WAYYYY too fast. I’m willing to bet he recited absolutely nothing and was merely demonstrating the physical movements involved in praying. Secondly, he prayed with his hands down by his sides, the vast majority of Muslims pray with their hands across their abdominal/belly button area. Many including those who follow a particular school/sect within Islam pray with their hands down. It’s largely misjudged by casual/ignorant Muslims since Shias pray that way( majority of Shia have extreme beliefs and stray away from the authentic way of Islam in many areas) thus making ignorants who do not have much knowledge regarding the positioning of the hands in Islam to be very judgemental when they see it. Truth of the matter is, the prophet was seen praying in both ways, hands across/down. And when asked why, he said ‘ so that it does NOT cause a dispute in my umma ie followers. Now I haven’t exactly researched it this narration is strong, meaning reliably safe to follow and believe. But I strongly lean towards that it is reliable, and it certainly sits right with the general attitude and delivery of lessons and wisdoms conveyed by the prophet so, worth looking into, and again, not the greatest issue in the world, but effort into reviewing its legitimacy is as always strongly encouraged. Further more, the inconsistency in raising your hands and lowering them before making movements ( the thing Sam pointed about the dark man in the back row of prayer ) That was weird also, I didn’t pay too much attention but usually that’s only done while transitioning between still standing / bending over movements, up and down. And does not necessarily happen when you’re on your knees then prostrate twice then stand up. Some believe it’s a preference others believe they’re right however fashion they choose to follow. Again, not the most important thing in the world. 3- I didn’t pay attention the very last part before they ended the prayer, but I think the angle made it difficult to see the toes of the person leading the prayer. It is mentioned that your toes should be facing in the same direction you’re facing when you sit. And so if you know or if you search this online, you find the sitting positions in our prayers to be uniquely looking for someone that’s just sitting, people put effort into sitting in a particular way which makes as many of the toes face in the same direction you face. Again, I doubt it’s the most important issue in the world, god values our intentions much more than anything else. However, with that being said, due effort into researching the fashion at which the prophet has been narrated to perform the prayer where it is available to study and following that example is encouraged to compliment the existing intention of performing your prayer in the best/accurate form known, is an obligation upon Muslims. And so, if you want to find tiny issues here and there, you can find them. The bigger picture here is, many in this crowd have little to no knowledge of Islam/it’s prayers. Showing them a small yet heart relieving demonstration of what happens inside our mosques.. effectively erasing any ridiculous assumptions they have/had, goes a very long way. And so, this opportunity and initiative was humbling to see, and a true believer can do nothing more than pray this lecture had a positive effect on everyone in terms of raising awareness and fixing the terrible impressions people have about Muslims.

This is the Maliki way of prayer which is Sunni, Educate yourself before speaking just because they don't clasp their hands together it doesn't make them shia. Shia's dont do the tasleem at the end like they did. We have 4 schools of thought within the Sunni Theology, Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi and Hanbali. Majority of the Muslims follow the Hanafi school of thought.

Second point if you are not Muslim please do not try to pray why? Because Islam has five pillars and you have to fullfil one after another 1. Shahaada 2. Salaat 3. Zakah ( charity) 4. Excuse me, I apologize...but I am another Muslim and I feel like this vedio was a great understanding for what a Non-Muslim could know about Islamic prayer, but when the Muslims prayed the Salah wasn't even done correctly. I'm not the one to judge, but I think as all Muslims we know we begin the prayer with "Allahu Akbar" and that was not even stated by the gentlemen leading the prayer. That hadith was a large hadith and you are taking out a small sentence to support your case. It doesn't work like that. I agree that we pray as the prophet prayed. It is reported by Ibn Al Qasim (may Allah have mercy on him) that Imam Malik (may allah have mercy on him) said concerning qabd (folding hands): "I do not know about it (as in he did not see the people of medina praying with hands tied)". The primary position in the Maliki Madhab is that Qabd was abrogated, which is why the people of medina did not do it. There is a secondary position in the madhab that says qabd is preferred. Nevertheless, either one does not invalidate the prayer. All scholars agree that not folding hands does not affect prayer. And Allah knows best.

I don't really wanna say much when the whole comment section is filled with exact details on why this demonstration wasn't the right way. In Islam right from the very beginning, people perform prayers with their hands put together one above the other. Not sideways which is the Shia way of praying. May Allah guide us best. One of the details missing is, wrong translation except few and missing a few sentences to explain. To end this, seriously, who wears shoes while praying? This video isn't bad at all but please be advised that there is a proper presentation on the Web of how exactly to pray and what does the call for prayer truly means in english.
