After ignoring JVP during medical school, essentially faking my understanding of it for last 10 years since graduating, today I finally understood this concept. Thank you Tom!

A wave - Atrial Contraction - Atrial pressure rises X descent - RelaXation of RA, ventricles shrink and allows the atrium to fill in! C - Closure of Tricuspid valve - at the start of systolic contraction V - Villing(filling) of Ra as atria relax - slight rise in JVP Y - Triscuspid opens - EmptYing RA

This helps me out a lot, I was getting the idea from these two textbooks 1. Textbook of Physical Diagnosis 8th Ed. (by Mark H. Swartz) 2. Evidence-Based Physical Diagnosis 5th Ed. (by Steven McGee) But with your video, I think I can understand it even better, it really helps to see a simplified figure such as yours in the video, I thank you a lot for your work.

Excellent video Zero to Finals. At 3:03 in your video, you referred to hepatojugular reflux as reflex by mistake. "Reflux" would better describe what happens with that manouvre. It might be worth noting it in the comments. Keep up the excellent content and thank you for uploading this video.
@wholeNwon5 жыл бұрын
Yes. The problem with compressing the liver is that doing so is uncomfortable and may cause the pt. to contract the abd. musculature complicating the analysis of additional info. to be derived. Compression over the mid-abd. expresses blood from the splanchnic bed. This can be observed in the ext. jug. Despite continued compression, the splanchnic bed then normally dilates and the JVP fall. Increased sympathetic tone associated with heart failure prevents the normal reflex dilation.
