Күн бұрын

Several strong experiences with the complexities of race as a child led hephzibah to wanting to escape these problems by becoming a business major and 'marrying well'. As she embarked on that path she found that solution incomplete and unfulfilling and so move into studying economics and sociology. Since then, she has developed an understanding of how White Privilege and White Supremacy shaped the structures not only of her childhood, but also of our country.
Dr. hephzibah v. strmic-pawl is a sociologist who specializes in the study of race and contemporary racial inequality, and has a focus on American multiracialism. She is the author of the book Multiracialism and Its Discontents: A Comparative Analysis of Asian-White and Black-White Multiracials and co-editor of the reader Race and Ethnicity: Constancy in Change. In addition to her research on multiracialism, she is invested in the pedagogy of race and is beginning new work on gentrification. Dr. strmic-pawl is also the founder of the campaign to create a holiday in honor of the Civil Rights Movement activist, Ella Baker (www.supportellabakerday.com). She is currently an assistant professor at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York and resides in Brooklyn.

If one doesn’t learn from one’s past, then one is likely to repeat it. Our past is just as she’s described, and we have not learned from it yet. Let’s hope that we learn to do better now that we know better.

They are ashamed of how we speak of tveir past. Hpwever, it is our shared past and learning how to shape new relationships with new knowledge is how human evolution works. We are evolving in our understanding of ourselves and our place in the eorld snd with each other, of course we are going to over turn past ideas... Hunan identity is connected to our ideas and how tvey are attracted by cultural/marketing tradition. So, applying the knowledge is met with Supreme resistance.

Stop trying to redefine language. No one but social justice warriors and the like, muddy the waters with this kind of newspeak. You can talk about "racism" as codified in laws at the beginning of this country's current government, but the second you try and cast the entire modern society as "racist" is the second "racism" becomes meaningless. If you want to talk about disparate outcomes for minorities, fine, but unless you have hard data showing that the reason for those outcomes is directly stemming from implicit biases, or laws that are themselves discriminatory. By analogy, the "pay gap" is not an example of sexism or patriarchy (the structural racism of sexism), unless it exists for reasons other than women choosing jobs that pay less. If you have hard data on the links between implicit bias and negative outcomes as far employment, stop burying the lead; start with those. This TED talk lacks anything beyond middle school history class.
@beenz07
@beenz07 7 жыл бұрын
I had to read your comment in my notifications. Ted Talks are typically little more than infotainment. More importantly, unless she made the specific claims I spoke about as being relevant, hers is an uninteresting historical account, not sociology, or better hard science. Since these words carry a lot of power, confusing their meaning is a terrible thing to do. Racism can be both used to describe disparate outcomes and alternatively, some level of animus and bias, but choosing to do so is stupid. "racism" is inadequate for the account of things like social outcomes, because of how variable laden such outcomes are and because of how charged the word is. Adding "systemic" has turned it into an unfalsifiable conspiracy theory.

I could not get through this talk. Was this meant for children? Yeah, racism is terrible. I've known the horrors of racism ever since I was in grade school when we watched "Cry, The Beloved Country." That movie took place in South Africa not the U.S by the way. This is not an American- white people problem. It's a world problem that has existed throughout history.

A lot of good points made, but listening to her voice and manner of speaking is a bit painful. Also, while her point about the Founding Father's is a good attempt, it's a broad brush which ignores John Adams who was against slavery and more important to the creation of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution than most people realize.
