Millions of people are in pain daily, as chronic and persistent pain affects more people than those with heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined. The talk will explore the complexities of pain, especially when pain persists, and provide a more recent neuroscience understanding of why someone hurts. Often as pain persists, it is less about structural damage to the body, but more about the nervous system's sensitivity. Recent scientific discoveries have led to an understanding of some of the complexities of pain. When understood by the person in chronic pain, these discoveries have helped them recover to a fuller life. In addition, knowing about pain can lead to knowing what to do about it. The talk will share how these discoveries to retrain a sensitive nervous can help those in pain. Kory Zimney, PT, DPT, Ph.D., has been practicing physical therapy since 1994 after graduating from the University of North Dakota with his Master's in Physical Therapy. He completed his transitional DPT graduate from the Post Professional Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program at Des Moines University, Class of 2010. He also earned his Ph.D. in Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in 2020. Dr. Zimney is an Associate Professor within the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of South Dakota and the Director of the Ph.D. in Health Sciences program at USD. He also serves as a Senior Faculty member with Evidence in Motion, a post-professional continuing education company, and is a researcher with the Therapeutic Neuroscience Research Group and USD Center for Brain and Behavior Research. He has treated thousands of patients in pain, published multiple peer-reviewed research articles, and co-authored books in pain neuroscience education. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Fantastic. I am a physical therapist who helps to run an interdisciplinary program for patients who suffer from chronic pain. I am TPS certified and teach a lot of pain neuroscience in our program. I will certainly be showing this video in the near future. Thank you Kory. Great job!

Would be very beneficial to see this approach adopted everywhere - I’m speaking as someone from the UK. Usual frustration though is that there’s no reference to chronic conditions that affect the nervous system or brain; as someone living with chronic pain due to having MS this is always a yawning gap in these presentations. However I can endorse the diet and exercise, lack of stress etc as helping with any ongoing pain.
