Thank you for publishing this! Its great to actually hear the difference between the two instruments while they're played together.

The difference in tone between the 2 trumpets is massive - the instrument without vent holes sounds more consistent and blends with the period cornets to some extent.

I always wanted to perform Berlioz that way, but my trumpet colleagues were not interested,,,,,

Thank you for the demonstration I play trumpet and alphorn not quite professionally but incorporated into an 11 piece non profit band that has played in Montreal for about 16 years. I would like to learn the natural baroque trumpet. The only teacher available demands my own instrument. The cost of a new one is very high and I am not sure if I will be able to move forward with it . What do you suggest Chaim Tzvi Tanny Montreal Canada

Those early cornets had valves on the left side of the bell, probably because they were played by French horn players.

Natural trumpets are probably the root cause for european scales. Pentatonic scales are standard throughout most of the world. But a natural trumpet naturally plays in the mixolydian mode. A typical ancient sounding european major scale.
