Understanding proper Peep Sight alignment and set up with Phil Mendoza

Phil Mendoza with No Limits Archery and The Alpha Bowhunting Challenge talks about Peep sights for compound archery. Proper peep sight set up and allingment is a key factor in improving your accuracy. Phil talks about how too big of a peep creates variables as well as too small of a peep. There are many variations to a sight as well as a peep sight that aid in the optimal set up for your compound bow. The biggest factor in the variables that you can encounter with peep alignment starts with understanding how your eyes perceive light in bright and dim situations.

I've been bow hunting for decades and have been doing it wrong the whole time. I shot rifle as a kid and shot a peep sight. So when I started shooting a bow most of the sights where just on a flat piece of metal. Now I have a sight with a ring but I always centered what ever yardage of pin in the center of the peep. I am going to start concentrating on using my housing as reference and put whatever pin is right for yardage. Makes more sense and will probably improve my accuracy. Thank you for this.

I was doing the same. Used to do shooting competitions in the Army, so I naturally put whichever pin in the center of the peep.

WOW Phil, this info has solved a lot of my sighting issues, I have always used a very small peep hole which has obstructed most of my target, never did I know that the outer ring on the pin sight was to be used for this purpose in archery. Thank you very much for this video.

Say I’m no expert in filming but try facing your lamp the other way with a card board sheet and try foil the shiny side facing the lamp wrapped around the card board and adjust it so it puts the glare in your face so it would light up your picture. Just a suggestion to help you get rid of the spot. I hope it works and good luck on more tips. I really appreciate your advice

I'm surprised you haven't talked about sight light. You showed a 1 pin. I have a 4 pin which I feel like a sight pin would do better with multi pin setups

I just changed my peep size. Had to drive 60 miles to get it done the pro shops here would not do it said it was to small for hunting just had to much day light... Got it done it's souch better

I personally have a bright ring around my sight. I would love it if there were a red ring around a peep sight, made of similar filament to the red filament that glows in the sight. I often find it hard to differ from the peep sight and the outside of the sight when it's medium light conditions.

First and foremost I think is an obvious is that I don't have a peep sight and will fix that soon... however I know that looking downrange I have to aim high and to the left in order for the bow to hit the target low and to the right. Now matter how much or little I adjust the pin sight. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong even though I'm still hitting the target

My Field IQ sight is so far to the right, that the bow riser is in the way of the bow sight ring. This is necessary for the the sight to be line with the arrow. Any suggestions to how I might adjust something to correct this?

In this situation you can only take the remaining 2/3's of your sight and ensure it is centered. Different bows have different amounts of bow torque causing an outward door hinge appearance. This is why part of your sight appears to be covered by the riser. You are doing nothing wrong.

You may consider changing the color scheme on your peep or sight housing to clear up the fuzz. Sometimes if a shooter has two similar colors they can appear to be fuzzy when at full draw. Another fix may be that you need a verifyer in your peep. Its is essentially a touch of magnification in the peep to help clear things up. Look at Hamskea Archery solutions and find their insight peep system for options

question of the year, how do you sight your peep in at 60 if you cant set up a sight tape without your peep in? they never seem to explain that part. sure i can put a sight tape on my bow and adjust my peep at 60 if i already had another peep to sight my tape at 60 lol help with this someone?

I think u are confusing terms here. No sight tape on a peep. The sight itself has a tape but the peep is the part on the bow string. I realize this is a 7month old question. Hope this helps.

Great vid. I have a question. When I look through my Peepsight on my bow it looks like the way you described it in the video the right way. But when I look at the level on my site it is not level it is off to the right when I adjust the level to make the bubble in the center the site moves out of my Peepsight in my shot gets thrown off to the left I checked the second access on my site and it is good. Any tips

Hello Mike, sorry for the delay. I don't check these posts as much as I should and I don't get notifications on them as it is not my primary channel. There are a few things that you might need to check out here. First, if you have a moveable sight make sure that your driver rail is level as well. It is possible for your housing to be level to the bow and the driver rail to be out, so as you move your sight up or down it could cause level issues. If your sight housing, driver rail is all properly leveled up you may just have a natural cant by the way you hold your bow. I would suggest you watch the sight leveling videos by Hamskea archery solutions. Towards the end of their process they talk about this a bit. It basically involves you getting your sight leveled in a vise, like we have already mentioned, then draw the bow back and if what feels natural to your has your bubble off to one side or the other, adjust the driver rail to match your natural cant.

Buy an anchor sight and get rid of your peep and gain 3-5 fps..... U dont need a peep sight for bowhunting.

If your peep is correct size and covers scope ring proper. There is no need too set with middle range peep. Also if your moving your head up and down too see your peeps. You have a poor set up.

CORRECT! LARGE PEEPS LET IN MORE LIGHT. But to much variable. Micro peeps not enough field of view. Or target. I always used a small. For both hunting and tournament.

What the beast way to measure peep height on a person bow if you're trying to set it up for him

Load an arrow, have them draw the bow back and align a pen tip or marker along the top of the string and have them tell you when it appears to be center on the housing. Then install the peep and fine tune the set up. Have them draw the bow back, then close their eyes and find their anchor points. once they are set based off feel have them open their eyes and adjust.

62shalaka yes, because if u raise the peep on the string u will have to lower the peep to raise the pin, Tilting the whole bow upwards.

Never change your peep height once it’s tied in or your anchor point to get the sight housing in your peep when u move your sight it will affect your accuracy at all distances
