The roof rack dynamic rating given out by rack manufacturers is, at best, an educated guess. I challenge if any of of them did a crash test or even a high speed swerve test. So just because the rack manufacturer does not de-rate for off road driving doesn’t mean you shouldn’t . The old rule of thumb take 1/3 off the rating is a good idea. The best thing you can do is to use 3 load bars bolt directly into the roof if your car allows - saves 20kg off a platform set up - you can mount your maxtrax, shovel, a couple swags sitting on a painted marine plywood board across 2 load bars. The maxim “ do more with less” holds true here too

On the new pickups when mounting canopy and racks on the tub, brackets must be installed in the corners on the tie down points to brace and take the weight of the canopy or rack. If this is not done the tub can crack on the outer skin and on the welds.
