It's really nice to have this information presented in a way that doesn't mystify it. I've been trying to better understand things like this and Chinese astrology, but I keep running into these new-age hippie superficial websites that really don't seem to have much genuine interest in the culture that they are appropriating. You put a lot of life into the body of old knowledge that too often gets treated as static. These concepts meant different things to different people, and they argued about them. That means that the philosophy was much more dynamic than I've often been led to believe.

It’s pronounced “eye” Ching. That’s an I not and E. It’s translated. Association with “I “ and “eye” makes it more an accurate meaningful translation. Stop trying to demonstrate how much you studied it and look at the bigger picture. 😂❤️👍🏻👁️ The TAO of it.

No. It isn't " I" pronounced . New age goobers say it this way. I have never heard any philosopher or teacher pronounce it as the " I " sound 🥴😂 you should look into more cultural and historical facts , not just those that know very little and are trying to twist it into their own thing for profit.

46:12 your analysis of the sentence talking about "The Way" and "The Way of the Gentleman" reminds me of the way Miyamoto Musashi writes his book of 5 rings with "the way" and "the gentleman warrior". Reckon there's a connection?

I heard gentleman, 君子,used to be used in its name for people who went to war, was a leader of it, who were effective and noble in their leadership. So this is around 1500BC to 500 BC. But later as scholarship became prevalent the meaning of 君子 became more about the educated man than a war minister. This change must have happened around just before Confucius 500BC to 300BC. This change must have happened for the definition of 'gentleman' 君子

Without ever hearing or knowing about the 'I Ching' before, I suddenly came across it in 2 different situations in the same period. First while listening to Terence McKenna lectures. Secondly while reading Herman Hesse's "the Glass Bead Game' in which the 'I Ching' is quit prominently present. When the student is ready... Thanks for this great lecture!

Good evening, Bryan Teacher. How are you today? Today I still learn Chinese philosophy from your lectures, and this lecture is useful and exciting for me very much. I remembered that Master Tang Mingbang 唐明邦 told us in his book named "Comments and Annotations of Zhou Yi"《周易评注》that "The book of Changes《周易》(or 《易经》) not only is the book of heaven (天书) in the cultural history of the world, but also has many cultural values, so the book of Changes is the oriental wisdom." I absolutely agree with Master Tang Mingbang. Thank you Bryan teacher, I wish you have a nice weekend. From Thailand 🇹🇭

I don’t know if synchronicity is real, but I do know that the I Ching works for me. Throwing coins twice for the same question is unlikely to give the same hexagram twice, but this does not matter because each of the 64 chapters provides a frame for thought. Regarding Schrödinger’s cat, I came to believe that there is a misunderstanding about observations on a quantum level. From what I understood it is not the observation itself that collapses the wave function, but the fact that the sensor is placed on the trajectory of the “wave”. It’s like measuring cars on the highway by letting them smash into your sensor, instead of observing them based on the light that reflects off the cars. Obviously that will collapse their wave function, i.e. speed. Maybe I am wrong though, because I am no quantum physicist.

What a fantastic lecture! Very synchronous for me, thank you! It's interesting how it is "commonly" thought of as only one thing existing but things are only things when lines are drawn around them whether in space or in concept. "The Ultimate" cannot be a thing as it is infinite and boundless and the infinite is the blank canvas of all potential that "contains" the finite, the finite does not contain the infinite, or perhaps it does I don't know, but that's where I'm at... Things are mental divisions only, the mind is a space, you could say all is truly mind, the foundation is mind, but then you've thingized" it, in the end whatever you say it is it is not, it's all a creation, even what I am saying now, I've noticed people think they talk out of a sense of importance but truly when our motives are examined we do what we do for the enjoyment of it, our words aren't truth they are poetry. Anyway, sorry, ranting nonsense at this point, thanks again Prof ✌

My primary comment is: The I-Ching should not be considered philosophical in nature, but rather the meat, fruit, and bread of the pursuit of philosophy. My secondary comment is : The hexagrams 1-20 match precisely in order and content with other systems of the 20 days. Thus they are the meat and content of the day, for instance today is #4 Mang. These match (order and descriptors) the 20 days of the Maya Cholqi' calendar. These also match precisely with the images of the 20 major arcana of the tarot drawn by Coleman-Smith. These also match the 10 additional views of Mt Fuji, which were done in pairs of the twenty, thus numbering ten. The 21 - 56 hexagrams are the 36 decans of the solar year, and these match precisely with many systems, including 36 views of Mt Fuji, 36 decans of the Dendera Zodiac, the 36 decans on Altar V Tikal, the 36 decan images of the Hindu in Das Indische Horoskop by Marlene Kruger, 36 chapters of Numbers, and the first 36 chapters of genesis. These also match the lesser arcana of the tarot, though she did not have the level of understanding necessary to polish the images and also was hamstrung by the necessity of using the swords and whatnot, so it is mentioned but not used at high levels. It is to me considered a notable attempt. Jung and Freud were both born on the 3rd day , #3 hexagram Kun in the Legge trans, and # 3 Aj in the Quiche Maya, both of which mention a certain plant struggling to grow. The differences between Jung and Freud are easily discerned by examining their decans of birth, which clearly shows Freud having a bias toward sexuality and difficulty with parents, and Jung leaning toward wondrous wholistic human discovery rather than focus on ones own sexual perturbations. It is a well supported theory that the 20 days are the same order and function of the 20 amino acids, and the 36 decans are the first 36 primordial elements of the periodic table. These are the manifestations of the same energies. Index for correlations at artstrology dot com articles - artstrological Index

The hexagram in Leibniz binary numbers are upside down. You should also mention the 64 hexagrams represent 0 to 63 in binary numbers. The 64 hexagrams represent snapshots of the moment of the energy patterns in the universe. Just like the weather map you can predict the weather. The moment of the birth of a baby when he cries and sucks in his first breath. That frozen moment of the pattern of stars pattern also based on I Ching and Astrology. But all these are still in the realm of human realm , therefore the six realms . One is still in the cycle of life and death. One can find a way to totally come out of this cycle with the help a Tibetan master.

Dear Prof Van Norden, thanks for your feedback. Actually I know very little about I Ching, only consulting it once a while for the last forty years. So I am sorry to give any impression that I know a lot. But from my understanding, the yang and ying lines represent the waxing and the waning of the of the life forces, which are related to the mathematics number of 1 and 0. They are also related to DNA, which I have no knowledge of. I am a retired highschool teacher and a Vajrayana Buddhist for many years. I am very lucky to have met many teachers in my life, most of them are Tibetan Lamas. I have very little accomplishment and a great fortune to meet my wonderful teachers. I'm happy to write to you and wish you the best!

Huh just realised these trigrams are essentially triangles, trigonometry. I was watching a video earlier on babalonian mathematics, they were doing the same thing? Although babylonians didn't think of them as triangles apparently, the thought of them as rectangles divided diagonally. All in golden ratio due to their base 60 number system. Maybe that's where people make the mistake interpreting sacred geometry using out modern fractional system, maybe applying the old approach to "mathematics" will yield "better" results. Interestingly its not just science where we can draw these parallels, we can play this game with anything. It's works with economics too. And I think we can play this game because we're looking at the exact same system across the board just from differing perspectives. Lol we've had one idea, one insight and then just spun it out in an endless variety of forms without realising it bahaha 😅

@@BryanVanNordenPhilosophy ah, I agree and I see now that I should have specified something about my approach to the I Ching: my approach is from the occult angle; an ‘irrational’ and ‘divine’ impulse from within (which I practice listening to) has put the I Ching into the field of my attention. hmm, maybe that doesn’t say that much after all. ok, then I will say I’m not really interested in using it for divination-I’m interested in encountering terminology which can help me describe the truths which my heart reveals to me (ie truths about the nature of reality & the relations between all things and events).
