I didn't think about it either, but it shows both her care for others and her constant drive to become better, for everyones sake. 16:13 I completely broke down here. I am the exact same way. I know I'm mean sometimes and I refuse to let people walk on me (to a degree, 'coz I'm still a push over), and I too really hate having to graduate b'coz I feel it's the end of my freedom. I kinda care but I'm a lot like May where I don't want to care too much, I'm sick of being angered or let down. I even have a complicated, infuriating, sad relationship with my mom. I like the difference between toph’s conversation with iroh and Sokka. When she was talking to Iroh her feet are firm and she’s in a position where if she had to she could quickly get up. She had just met Iroh and she was alert. When she’s talking to Sokka her feet are dangling, she’s more venerable, and she’s letting her guard down. I just think it’s nice attention to detail

The Fire Nation royals wouldn't typically have a surname. Similar to royalty on our world, their surname is their rank or the dominion they rule, which can change through their lives. His surname is the prefix "Prince", and later the prefix "Fire Lord". Surnames are also rather new in our world, and before their introduction someone would be addressed in the long form by a description of their occupation, village/region they come from, their parentage, or some other defining characteristic. After the introduction of surnames these long descriptors were shortened to the most pertinent component. So Katara's and Sokka's surname is "of the Southern Water Tribe". Not very concise, but it is their name. Perhaps if the world of Avatar takes a cultural turn like ours did, away from extended tribal affiliation and toward hyper-individualism, there would be a lot of clerks who arbitrarily allocate the surname "South" to people of the Southern Water Tribe. Aang wouldn't have a surname either because the Air Nomad's community based, non-linear family structure. While they probably know who their biological parents are, they are raised by the community and not individual parents. They are all the same family. I would need to look further into the details around Toph's family history to figure out exactly how they got their name, though it appears that family names are a thing that influential families of the Earth Kingdom have. Given how officials react to her identity documents, her family's not just wealthy, they're influential, apparently bankrolling many other influential families for centuries. Also, consider the additional factor of their influence when the Beifong's are on the other side of the continent from Ba Sing Se, the centre of Earth Kingdom political influence.

I appreciate the bit about the diversity of female characters as well. People tend to take feminine motherly characters as cliche/stereotypical and believe those type of characters can't be cool, and believe they need to be some kind of tomboy to be badass. So I appreciate Avatar for what its done as far as female characters and doing every archetype they show justice.

And I also think that it’s poignant that it’s Katara that’s represented as the motherly figure of the group. If you dig deeper on that trait, I think it’s a lot to do with the fact that she lost her mom at such a young age. I can’t imagine the kind of experiences Katara went through to imagine how much she wanted her mom enough to emulate that imagination.

Maybe someone already said it, but when Katara says to Toph that she is beautiful, Toph believes it not only because of their friendship but because she KNOWS that Katara is saying the truth, she can tell when people are lying. I think people often overlook the fact that Toph can tell when someone is lying based on their heart rate due to her advanced earthbending. So during The Tales of Ba Sing Se episode, when Katara tells toph that she is pretty, Toph could sense that Katara was being honest and genuine.

As a person with a disability ( not a physical one but a learning one) I relate to Toph because yearning for freedom and people who won’t pity and genuinely like you for what you are instead of seeing you just not for your disability but as a normal person. Kiyoshi is the baddest avatar next to Korra and we idolize both of them in this household

Yes, YES! When I first saw Tales of Ba Sing Se, I was like "wait, what? the girls have to SHARE a vignette?" But then on further contemplation, this is exactly what they needed. Toph didn't need another scene showing her as an independent badass (we already know that). What Toph needed was to show her connection to someone else, and Katara specifically. As I think of Avatar as a whole, these two needed that scene, more than it seemed at the moment. Toph was the awesomeness team avatar needed and as I look back on the series it is crazy to me that we actually went a whole season without her!

When she meets Korra so many years later, and recognizes her as the Avatar, she chuckles and says "Nice to see you, Twinkle-Toes", a nickname she had for Aang. It fulfills her 12-year-old self's quote to the letter.

Coming from a background of extremely overbearing parents I always felt a connection with Toph and totally understood where she was coming from with her struggles of connecting with people and accepting external help, as I have always felt the need to do things by myself as a way to feel validated. Even if she doesn't have a huge character arc like other characters such as Zuko, she still really did show a beautiful and realistic growth as a person. In a series such as ATLA it's very difficult to pick favorite characters as everyone is great, but I can say she has always had a very special place in my heart as an inspiration of strength and independence I strive to have, while still retaining a kind heart and fun spirit like she does.

I resonate with Toph almost completely. Being the youngest of 3, and with my two older siblings not living to my parents standards ( not to say theyre not successful ), my parents are fearful that I will not go the route they want me to on top of them forever seeing me as the baby of the family. One of the aspects that Toph proves is that you don't have to PLAN to have "strong female characters" - you just need to have strong CHARACTERS. Toph wasn't planned as female, they decided to make her female late in the development, and went with it. They wrote her as a strong character, who just happened to be female, and ended up with one of the most beloved characters in animation.

She really helped me deal with my own insecurities especially about opening up. I tend to just be a quiet person or a freak but when I get emotional its with anger. Asking for help often gets me in tears and Toph gave me courage to ask for help, and that I don't have to lose myself to get that help. I just have to find the right people and open up more.

I loved Toph, even now I still love her. When I was younger, I wanted to be just like Toph. Even now I still want to be like her, she was my role model. I love her friendship with Sokka, since they are my favorite characters. I was always scared of being blind, since I don’t wanna lose my sight. But seeing Toph being so cool, even though she is blind made me less scared. And made me realize that a disability is just a disability, and you shouldn’t let it shape your life (tho I still don’t wanna be blind). Toph is just a great character, I love her personality. One of my favorite aspects about Toph is that she judges people by their character and not appearance. The blindness is the reason for this, but I feel like everyone should follow this principle. People are more than their appearance and it’s too easy to write someone off because they don’t appeal to ones own convention of beauty.

Avatar has females that are strong while keeping them feminine. Something that’s important and part of females. The same way masculinity is for men
