【Undertale Fan Animation】 The Last Sentence

What if sparing Sans looked like this?
This idea has been in my head for a while, and I just wanted to get it out, haha.
This is my second time using CACANi for anything and my first time using CACANi for an entire video.

This will be my last Undertale animation for a LONG time, because I’m out of ideas, and I get it. You Undertale fans like things to stick to canon. You don’t like open interpretation and creative freedom, I get it. So, I’ve got good news, you won’t have to suffer seeing me making up any more creative ideas and interpretive animations for Undertale, because, well, I’m out of ideas. I get it.

I noticed that half of the comments are saying that this a pretty messed up scene. In my opinion, it’s a pretty emotional scene for both parties, and it’s executed so well. I mean, the only way you can go back to the menu is to get killed. So, by accepting Sans’s mercy, Frisk was killed and ultimately reseted that timeline. “If we’re really friends, you won’t come back.” Obviously, it was hard for Sans to have to kill someone, let alone be his friend from the other timeline.

When he said "If we're really friends, you won't come back", Sans meant that Frisk wouldn't LOAD, as trying to attack Sans when he offers you "mercy" after he already dunked you leads to Sans saying that you never really was his friend, and now he knows you are a god-wannabe that must be wiped out from existence.

I always pictured this scene like that. I lovw how all the monsters do accept your mercy at some point, even flowey and asgore. But Sans.. oh boi, that's what makes him scary, he's merciless just how you were to everyone else in that route. You know, I never REALLY realized just how emotional sans actually was during this until recently. Especially after watching this video. Let me explain. (studios) Essentially, Frisk spares Sans. Sans proceeds to hug Frisk (in pretty much all fan interpretations) and proceeds to kill them even while still hugging them. This gives me that feeling that Sans still believes in you. This is where I get branching paths. In the game, he says "*geeeeeet dunked on!!!!!!!!!!!" and Dogsong plays sped up. I like to believe this is sans playing it off as a joke, as a moment later, he says "*if we're really friends...you won't come back." In animations like this, he says "*get....dunked on...." rather hesitantly. He still believes in you, and he's probably on the verge of crying, himself. He then proceeds to say "*if we're really friends...you won't come back." just like in the game. He is literally giving you the final chance to just fix everything and make it all right again. You can tell by the regret and tone in his voice, that he was reluctant to kill frisk. He didn't want to break his promise to toriel, but he needed to avenge his race. He didn't have a choice. That being said, he was...very upset that he killed you. He didn't want to, he had to.

I love how in the game, this scene was mostly done in a way where it would get a good laugh out of you, while in this beautiful animation, it’s so grim and it hits you right in the feels.

Honestly, to me this is much more heart-warming than Sans just forgiving Frisk and allowing them to not die. He sees that Frisk is sorry for their actions, and he realizes what he'll have to do to end it. By killing the human, so that they can reset. However, in this animation especially, you can see the hesitation in doing so, because he *does* remember the good times, he *does* know that Frisk is a good person, and just bringing himself to kill them without remorse would make him no better than they were. That hug at the end...that just places a neat little bow on this as well. This in my opinion, is why Sans is one of the best characters in Undertale, nay, fiction period. He can be so funny, annoying, and cool at times, however if you mess with his family and friends, *you're gonna have a bad time.*

Sans "killing" Frisk here is the most merciful thing he can do. If he didn't kill Frisk, Frisk would be stuck in a timeline where they are a genocidal maniac, all of their friends and loved ones are dead by their own hand and the only thing they get to look forward to is darkness and being possessed by a broken remnant of what was once an already damaged and angry child for the rest of time. By killing Frisk, Frisk can now reset, all the people that they remember that they cared about will be alive and healthy again and have no memory of what they went through. Since Frisk never made it all the way to Chara they can even still have a true pacifist ending.

All the monsters in the game (or most of them) are based off of actual mythical creatures. Like the rabbit people in Snowden and The Dreemur family are a race called "Puca" (I think I spelled that right) which are monsters that resemble Rabbits and Goats and can look very human like but still hold those animal features. Because of How Sans is and his glowing eyes some people think Papyrus and Sans may be Revenants. Revenants are basically Humans that had such strong feelings that overcame death, and their souls refused to leave their bodies. It could be a strong feeling of love or intense hatred. Either way they can look entirely human or nothing but a skeleton and when they spot their target, the object of their obsession that overcame death, their eyes glow and they become relentless. Sans sees you the maniac that killed everyone he cared about and his eyes glow and relentlessly attacks you refusing to give up until either you die and stay dead or he dies. Afterall a Reavent NEVER gives up and will NEVER back down.

Frisk is all but outright stated to be a pacifist too. Seeing those flashbacks of a pacifist run tore me up; I know Frisk wouldn't destroy everyone's happy ending like that. What I really like about the Japanese translation is that it makes that last statement unambiguous. It basically says “If we’re really friends, you won’t come back to FIGHT”. The original version could just mean that you give up entirely and leave them with the genocide run forever unfinished. I’d like to believe that Sans is willing to forgive you if you give up and reset and set things right. Him killing you gets you to the reset option, showing you the only way to his ‘mercy’. I’ve never gotten past the Judgment Hall, I’ve always either reloaded my save or reset after beating Sans (normally I don’t kill him). He is right, after him, there is literally nothing left to the game. Nothing except destruction, that is. I never really wanted to do genocide, but I wanted to fight Sans, and that is the only way to get him to fight. I feel terrible killing Papyrus, he is the only monster that never stops believing in you and will never kill you in any route. Killing Sans is the second worst in my opinion, because he knows that you can do better. He knows that you probably have done better in a previous timeline. He knows that you aren’t just evil (probably), that you have a choice, but you are choosing to make a bad one. I can feel his disappointment, and that hurts more than Papyrus’s blind belief in me. This is why I have always reset from an aborted genocide and gone through to give them a true pacifist ending (no matter how tedious). I hope that it can be penance for those bad choices. I want to believe like Papyrus does, that anyone can be a good person, if they just try. I apply that belief to even outside the Undertale world and into my real life. This game’s meta message is about choice and how that reflects on one’s character. Yes, there are themes of mercy, but I believe that it emphasizes the idea of free will above that.

The thing is, in canon, sans knows you are most likely fooling around and seeing what happens if you spare him, he knows if you let you do this you will most likely just see what happens and reset to the fight again. What I like in this animation is the stark contrast of the line “get dunked on” and the last line “if we’re really friends, you won’t come back” it illustrates sans still does have hope, and gives you the decision to reset to the title screen, and start all this over. Sans is a complicated character, and I like here how it illustrates how hard this was for him.

Oooh lovely animation. Very smooth and top quality voice acting. Strange hearing Sans with an actual voice instead of the UH-UH-UH-UH-UH-UH sound effect his talking makes in the game xD The kill was quite brutal (bone impale from crotch through to the head, ouch) but I quite liked it. Visualised it much better than the game (though obviously the game had graphical limitations). And Sans's black eyes when he says 'Get dunked on' xD Awesome animation. Keep up the good work. Liked!

I think a lot of people maybe misinterpreted sans saying "If we’re really friends, you won’t come back." He’s saying if we really do care and are remorseful, we won’t respawn back into the judgement hall. Instead, we’d reset and respawn back at the beginning of the game. I don’t think he killed us out of anger, I think it was him giving us a chance to PROVE that we really are ashamed of our actions and want to change.
