Imo, I always thought that mettatons 1st form was simply too strong to break/hurt. Like, nothing Frisk is capable of doing could harm him, because he was essentially a solid steel cube on wheels. After transforming though, he became something more detailed and finer, far more delicate and therefore was able to be more easily damaged. And in a genocide run he actively lowers his defenses because he knows what your going to do and in following his programmed desires, is still trying to help you even if it means his direct destruction. Remember, he was made with a desire to help humans, I guess that means even if the only human available wants to kill him :(

I think the reason he chose NEO in genocide was that he originally had it to eradicate humans for asgore, but was later removed, but not fully. Because of that, he thought he would be stronger, but instead it didn't work as planned.

Are human souls actually upside down? Because what if monsters also see their own "battle system" so for their perspective it's normal and YOUR soul is upside down for them (logically)? Asgore, Thinking that Mettaton was a soul, and that Alphys figured out how to put a soul in a robot, made Alphys the royal scientist, thanks to Mettaton. Eventually after Mettaton grew famous, he drifted from the fact of going back home to his Cousin Blooky, thus the appearances of the empty pink ghost shaped house. i think Mettaton has a super high defense in his original form because he's built that way. Alphys probably didn't want him to get hurt and so gave him very tough armour to protect him. However, Mettaton EX is more frail, probably because the defense would mean weight (i think we can all agree Mettaton is pretty heavy), so he didn't want that. But if he's incorporeal, how can your attack hit him? well, when in regular mettaton form, i think he works like the mad dummy, possessing the object in an incorporeal state. However, i think he changes for his spirit to be some form of battery. if you choose FIGHT and hit him, and his arms and legs fall off, it might be because his arms and legs are seperate objects, simply attached in some way or another, but not making them a part of the actual body. When you hit his heart while you're yellow, it might be that the spirit temporarily leaves the body (while the machine is still on, that might just be like unplugging a phone from a charger, it can still last a bit), and that the pellets that the yellow heart shoots are magic attacks. But that's just a theory of mine.

What if MTT was the ghost of the pink human soul? What if ghosts in undertale are humans without souls, as appose to souls the selfs. A human soul is what makes a human, well, human. Without the souls, they become ghosts or skeletons. And reason why people think they would be a class of monster is because, well, they are. According to lore, undead monsters have no memory of there past life (Exception to the remanent) and thus creating a new being. Perhaps alphys was trying to bring back the human in mettatons ghost?

There is no pink soul in game, but if we're theorizing then one could assume souls aren't limited to the seven types shown in game. There could be a nearly infinite number of types of souls corresponding to a trait and perhaps there was no pink soul in Asgore's custody because it was given to Alphys (or Gaster) to experiment with before they had the other souls in hopes of breaking the barrier. One could go so far as to speculate that Alphys or (more likely) Gaster attempted to remove the soul trait with the machine in the abandoned lab and ended up creating a ghost after draining the soul of its trait and thereby reducing the human soul to a monster soul. As a matter of fact, maybe none of the humans are truly dead and instead their souls are drained of their trait (what makes a human soul human) and creates new monsters: Sans, Papyrus, Nabstablook, Mad Dummy, Mettaton, the dummy at the beginning, and even Gaster himself who may have started turning humans into monsters sometime after the Chara incident. I honestly don't believe any of this was the intention of Toby when making Undertale, but it's fun to think about the implications of everything.

So, when Chara says "Mettaton makes his premiere", it means that Chara considers him as a guy, and uses "he" instead of "she", because he/she does not know Mettaton's backstory. And Bratty, Catty, everybody else don't as well, so that's why they refer to her as "he". For me, Mettaton is a guy, because I always thought she was, but I know that she isn't, and even fully knowing this, I still think of her as a male robot. Hishiga Hello there! You used English pretty good! I believe that mettaton is a male because I don't think it matters what gender his ghost was. Metta's ghost probably chose what gender she wanted to be in when she became corporeal. So now, she's basically a male. Also, I know you mentioned this already, but throughout the game, Mettaton is consistently referred to as 'He' and 'Him' . I don't think a game like this would call Mettaton 'He' if he is a girl. Hishiga There is no mention of Mettaton being a girl. He is never mentioned by any word that could potentially imply him to be female, and the only time where he isn't mentioned by he/him/his is when Undyne says "what was their name again..." when mentioning Mettaton's original ghost form(who's name isn't Happstablook The Happy Ghost like Papyrus said, btw). Mettaton is mentioned as "handsome" and "he" multiple times, including himself. Mettaton explained in his diaries that the only reasons why he didn't have a body was because he had a very specific choice for a body and that he didn't want to leave Napstablook, when Alphys proposed to him the option to have a body exactly like the one that he wanted, then he noticed that his dreams had to go before Napstablook. If Aplhys was just making his body because she wanted to make a cool anime body, she would've made Mew Mew, from Mew Mew Kissy Cutie, because she's her favorite character from her favorite anime. Mettaton calls himself handsome, and Alphys calls him be he/him/his, if he was a girl, then he would use any other word except handsome, and Alphys would use she/her/hers, there's no excuse there, because Alphys and Mettaton obvioously know about Mtt's backstory. And as for the "robots don't have genders" thing, that's complete and utter bullshit, Mettaton's a ghost in a robotic body, he has a personality and a gender, you may have meant that robots don't have sexes/sexual organs, but considering Mettaton's flirty personality and the fact that his overworld sprite has muscles, he probably does.

The reason the actual defense of mettaton ex is -42000 is so you can defeat them in one hit with a million damage. One of the books in snowdin say that humans are able to strike their foes with as much damage as they want if their intent is to kill.

The upside down heart could mean that love became hatred or could symbolize two tears (maybe even blood). It kind of makes sense since it only appears during a genocide run on both Undyne and Mettaton and fits the idea of a genocide run. Undyne transforms her love for monsters into hatred for humanity and same for Mettaton since he wants to protect monsters as well as humanity.

I think the battery thing can be compared to Fallouts power armor. It's essentialy a suit but it's too heave to lift without a power source. If mettaton were corporeal, his ghostly ability to lift things might not be enough to work EX and NEO. Even with his normal form he had to use a rocket to get around.

Also, there's another ghost, the tutorial dummy. You can tell that it's a ghost, when you do nothing during the tutorial fight (it'll fly away from your aimless shenanigans). Also, after the true pacifist ending, you can go back to the ruins and talk to the dummy ghost.

This is the reason why you can inflict normal damage on the monsters in the core, but an insane amount of damage upon Mettaton NEO (even though he states Alphys could have done a better job on his defenses).

+SwankyBox This is the case with all other bosses in Genocide, too (except Undyne, who is revived via determination and Sans, who dodges your attacks). The game states the worse your intentions, the more you'll hurt, which is maybe why regular enemies seem to have more defense.
