A very frugal method eating out is to not eat out, but to take your home cooked meal out. Drive to the beach, the park, whatever makes you happy. This also means the dishes are done, and you don’t have immediate access to a second helping.

I remember when I was a kid there were places along the road to pull off the road that had picnic tables. There were a few restaurants but not like there are now. My mom would clean out a milk jug and freeze it overnight. The ice kept the food cool and provided cold water when it melted. Food always tasted better on a picnic.

I have been doing the low buy challenge these last few months and was easily saving $200 a month for an incidental fund. Each time I reached $1000 I was going to put that in savings and start again. Unfortunately, my old cat got a UTI and needed urgent vet care. There went $205 of my fund. I could have been sad but was glad instead that I had the money at hand and didn't need to charge it! Or wait until my cat got sicker. ❤😻🤔

I consider myself SOMEWHAT frugal..but because we have not eaten out or traveled for pleasure in over 3 years... we decided to celebrate at a lovely restored Tavern this week. Being somewhat elderly and having Covid concerns, we asked for an early seating, and the proprietor made sure we had a private room all to ourselves. What a treat... and proof that being frugal does NOT equate denial and suffering.

We use to eat out 4+ times a week pre-Covid. HUNDREDS of dollars per month. When we were in lock down - we had to eat in and actually enjoy it more. I've been retired (age 57) since 2021 and do the majority of the cooking now since I'm home. KZbin is a blessing on that! If it's too complicated or too involved - I just move on to a simpler version. You know what -- when we go out now - about 2-3 times a month - we appreciate it MUCH MORE. So dining out is an experience that we do NOT take for granted like we used to. NOW - if we were eating out 4+ times a week like we used to - we probably would be up to $1k/mo with the increase in dining out (and we do NOT get alcohol when dining out). I'm also including all the food we would throw out because it expired. We cut down on food waste to almost none now.

This week I spent 16 at a consignment shop for a dress and blouse that were never worn, and turns out they were 178 dollars if bought brand new. The $16 I spent was actually a credit I had from selling some Winter clothes. Grandpa always said “If you take care of the pennies, you’ll always have dollars!” RIP Gramps ❤

Just found you and love all the points you make. No streaming here, basic cable only, I buy groceries twice a month only and freeze a lot including quarts of milk. For work, I always took my lunch and made my own coffee, filled a thermos and took that to work. I use a regular coffee maker and not one of those fancy 1 cup deals that only create waste not to mention the price of those coffee makers. When going to Starbucks or in my case, Tim Hortons, I'm in Canada, not only are you wasting money, but time whether or not you walk in or go thru a drive thru. Going thru a drive thru you can add wasting gas to that list and building stress. I use the same cell phone till it can't be used at all. I get used books and return them to the used book store for credit towards the next books. I would use the library but sometimes I can't get thru a whole book in the time allotted because I am also a writer. That $7440 dollars would get me 18 months of groceries. I use my credit card for everything possible. What you say!? I pay it off as I go. The money is in my bank account and I have a budget, and I never have a balance on the card. I do this because I'm on a points award type of program with my card. The more I use the card the more points I earn towards merchandise I can get for free with my points. I've been able to get bed sheets, binoculars and a great cast iron frying pan just to name a few. So my money works twice. I have a 13 column budget book and I add up the columns at the end of each month and carry over those totals to the next month. I can look at each month and see not only what I spent that month, but what I've spent for the year up to that point. I only eat out twice a month (before going to the grocery store) and that's at a reasonably priced restaurant and not a fast food place. I can take home what I don't eat from a regular restaurant. I rent instead of owning my own home. I do wish I could own my own place but where I live now is perfect for me and for my writing. My rent is extremely reasonable, I don't have to shovel snow as that's included as is water and garbage pickup. I live in an old A Frame cottage overlooking a small lake just outside of my small fishing hometown. I do live way below my income and have a savings account.

We are a family of 5 and eat at very diverend times because of our jobs and sports and so on, so I cook from scratch ( almost always) and who is home eats it " fresh" and who comes later pops it in the microwave. lefovers are eaten the naxt day or taken to work. Hi you two. Just wanted to share our frugal decisions re automobiles. We usually buy used w/a manufacturer's 1 year warranty. We buy solid, reliable cars like Honda or Toyota (nothing flashy or trendy). We are meticulous about maintenance and repairs on schedule. Then we drive the cars until they are DEAD. To prove that point, our daughter says: "No, you guys drive your cars post-mortem!" Which is actually true--once we had a Honda Civic totalled, but all that was wrong was dents in all fenders and one tail light broken. Instead of taking the small insurance payout, we decided to keep that car and continue driving it as long as possible--which saved us several more years before we had to purchase another car. We don't care about the appearance--a vehicle is just to get us safely from Point A to Point B. We don't fall into the trap of "status" re cars, clothes, homes, or many other things.

Fill old juice bottles of water and stuff your freezer when it’s not completely full. It will run more efficiently. If you buy more than it can hold, you just pull out a few bottles of water and let them defrost until you need them again. Works every time. 😉 My deep freezer is probably 15 years old.

Love this! For us, it seems like the almost daily small savings are what has helped us most financially. We rarely make large purchases, so even if we manage to get a good deal--it's a rare thing. If I can save on utilities, gas, groceries, etc.--those small pennies add up to big dollars. I am currently reading Tamar Adler's book "An Everlasting Feast: Cooking With Economy and Grace" and it's getting my mind into the zone of "leftovers are the beginnings of the next meal". It's much the same with money--the saved pennies are the beginnings of saved dollars. God bless!

I really am kind of split on that topic. I really think it's important to live somewhat frugal. But those two, while they have great tips, just seem to value to safe money more than they value experiences to a defree wher eit comes off as if they plan on taking their money to their grave 😅 I'm now young and therefore willing to sacrifice some things for financial security but I think it would be pretty sad if I have to be past my 50s and still not feel comfortable going to grad some fast food for me and hypothetical kids and instead just buy bread and stuff to make a sandwich. That I call cheap sorry if you are going to portray it as such a win to be proud of. So I think there must be a healthy balance between the choices of cutting back on some comfort and luxury vs actually having fun and not feeling guilty about leaving some money for some food and simply experiences that do involve money.
@trishanoel2410 Жыл бұрын
I hear what you're saying. I'm probably not as frugal as this couple. But I do get a kick out of getting a great deal, thus saving money. I didn't grow up with fast food so as an adult I'd never spend money on it. I like to eat healthy so I enjoy my own cooking. That's not to say I won't indulge in chicken wings from time to time. I live in Buffalo New York so wings become a social event. I've never had a car payment as saving has allowed me to buy cars outright. And I don't buy used. I suppose if I were really frugal I wouldn't have a car at all. I know alot of folks who act without thinking. For example my neighbor found a cat and kept him. Never considering how he'd pay for Vet visits long term. My neighbor can't hold down a job for long so the cat will become a problem.

@@JustLIkerapunzel I think you miss the point. It's not about saving money so you can go to the grave with a bank account full of unspent cash. It's saving so that you can work toward a bigger goal, like, buying a house without a mortgage. Or saving for a 6-month emergency fund. Or maybe you know you'll need a new car in a couple of years, so you save to avoid having to finance it and pay interest. Being debt-free is an amazing feeling that many of us "cheap" people are willing to sacrifice some "fun" for.

I have a small goal of $500 by the end of the year and I'm planning to continue adding $500+ each yr. I'm in the process of switching my dogs food over to something that's half the cost. And hobbies well.... I'm turning my van into a weekend camper. I already have everything I need around that house (including a camping stove) minus a cot mattress that is at my mom's house. Then the last thing I'm trying to do is learn how to cook. Heaven help the people that are trying my first few attempts!

I never eat out anymore. It's too expensive and it's also unhealthy. Most restaurants use tons of sugar, salt, preservatives, butter and other ingredients that you don't want in your body. Cooking at home will improve both your financial and physical health.

I have been watching your videos for around 12 months (but only just subscribed... oops). I have found your tips and tricks especially useful. The one major change i have made is to do my grocery shopping online rather than visiting the store itself - i know you advised against this way in one of your videos however, with me... if im in the store, i find i seem to buy things that were not on my list in the first place (my resistance willpower isn't good). Now, by doing my grocery shopping online, i don't see the rest of the shelves so all i buy now is what's on my list. It is fact i have to pay for delivery but i choose the lowest cost delivery slot which is available. In comparison, i used to spend around £120 per week on groceries in store but now it bounces between £90 - £100 now i shop online. I have also quit smoking cigarettes (i did this on 25 February 2023) and switched to vaping. I used to spend around £40 on rolling tobacco per week but since vaping... i'm only spending on average of £40 per month on vaping juices and accessories. Keep up the good work guys :)

Good job on making positive changes. We totally agree that sometimes delivery can mean you drop your food bills. My mom only does delivery and loves it.

How do you find other frugal people in your area. Most people I talk to look at me like I’m nuts.

I only share if they take the bait when I drop a frugal hint! Otherwise I just live my life and let ‘em wonder!😅 I once loaned a copy of my worn Tightwad Gazette to someone who didn’t appreciate its greatness….oh dear me!! Won’t do that again! 😂

I have a friend who is mad at me and boyfriend because we wouldn’t go to Hawaii with them. Yet they wouldn’t go camping or hiking with us. We gave up inviting them. We should ask about forming I frugality group. 🤔

Cost savings is only “Saving” if that money made its way to the bank. If not, you’re just stretching your dollar. This misconception is something I hear frequently.

I think how to save money changes with different stages of life. There was a time I couldn’t cook much because I was pregnant and had some terrible aversions. I bought a lot of Costco rotisserie chickens, convenience meals, and a lot of fast food. I really enjoyed the fast food, and got into a habit. To break the habit I bought hamburger patties I could grill myself. I don’t have to even have to buy those patties anymore, but for a season they helped me break the bad habit.

I save money buying refurbished items. They keep the guarantee active and the price can be really good. Most of the time the item is a new generation item.

I used to have a group of friends that I'd hang out with at bars, but then they wanted to do more expensive things like going to casinos and day trips. That's where our friendship drifted away. I have an artist's budget and they had normal 9-5 jobs.

Netflix has a new deal you can cut cost to $7 per month by allowing ads. I did that. Ads are not prolific and make nice bathroom breaks and sometimes fun, not like tv ads. No drug ads.

We have a great local recycling program through our University, so, we don’t pay for trash, between compost, recycle etc we have no need for the $300+ per year for trash.
