My favorite precede horror comics are the Frankenstein comics done by Dick Briefer. They started in Prize comics and then became their own series. His first Frankenstein appearance was in Prize #7, which happens to be the first appearance of Frankenstein in any comic book. I have a nice mid grade raw copy of issue #9, the third appearance of Frankenstein in a comic. His appearance changed greatly after that issue. The character started out evil, became good later on and then returned to his evil ways by the end of his series. I think all of Briefer’s comic work is undervalued at this point in time.

Love the collab guys. A video request of all 3 of you (and the community). If you were asked to build a collection to represent the diverse history of comics and can only pick one comic to represent each category, how would you define these categories (by age? publisher? genre? etc) and what would be your lineup?

That’s an interesting premise. Not quite sure how I would set up such a list. It could get pretty big, pretty quick.

Thank you Larry! I’m glad you’re enjoying the content! I’m a big Wolf Man fan myself. I probably rewatch it more than any other Universal Monster movie. The atmosphere in that movie is 🔥🔥🔥.

Great show. Many EC stories were swipes from pulp era and radio shows.

I started years ago with the EC line and later found that there were other books in the same type. I still have a few of my CGC graded ECs. Now looking for other titles like Haunted Thrills, Weird Chills etc.

I think it's worth noting that the cover of Haunt of Fear issue 4 involves two characters associated with the Universal monster movies of the 1930s and early '40s -- a living mummy and a hunchbacked lackey who looks quite a bit like Fritz, the lab assistant from the 1931 version of Frankenstein. One possible reason why early EC horror comics would nod to black-and-white monster flicks -- starting in 1948, a company called Realart Pictures, Inc. conducted theatrical re-releases of existing films, particularly Universal films. I don't have a complete list but I understand that Realart re-released The Bride of Frankenstein in 1948 and the original Frankenstein in 1951, for example. I believe that these re-releases probably kept the Universal monsters in the collective public consciousness and prompted the EC crew to use monsters inspired by the Universal line-up. A delicious bit of irony came along in 1957, just a couple of years after the Comics Code Authority was formed (in October 1954) and forbade the use of vampires and werewolves. That is, in '57 Universal Studios teamed up with Screen Gems to present and promote a package of 52 classic Universal horror films available to television stations for broadcast. You know what happened next -- late-night monster movie programs caught on nationwide, spurring the rise of the "horror host" (Zacherley, Vampira, etc.) and the simultaneous launch of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, both of which were foundational to horror-film fandom as we know it today. In essence, Universal and Screen Gems gave a big middle finger to the Comics Code, and not only got away with it but profited greatly.

I'm looking to get into pre code horror books. What would be a cheap way to get into them?
@CoMoComicBooks
@CoMoComicBooks Жыл бұрын
There isn’t much in the way of cheap when it comes to precode horror. The best advice I can offer is to research titles and find one that you enjoy and isn’t full of classic/iconic covers, as those are typically what drive the values higher.

@@CoMoComicBooks i heard you say in the other video that this Tales of Terror Annual #1 has a different 4 comics inside each one. Does that make certain ones more desireable and valuable than others? There are only 27 graded so cant be too picky i guess. Hard to know what the value is with so few sales.
@CoMoComicBooks
@CoMoComicBooks Жыл бұрын
@@Doc_Dooom it’s tough to say. CGC only recently started notating what the guts contained. Ultimately, it is the most desirable EC horror book there is, regardless of the contents. That said, if there was a first amongst equals it would likely be the copy the is comprised of all 1st issues. Hard to imagine a better possible copy than that
