Maine Freshwater Exploration Going Deep

Күн бұрын

@MFEGoingDeep today marks 1 year since the start of this channel and I’m proud to have this be the video to celebrate that occasion. So some things to note here; the deepest spot when this lake was surveyed was 316’. The area of 300’ + water is quite large (1 1/2 x 1/2 mile approx.) so once I had a consistent reading on my depth finder over 300’ of depth I decided to make the dive. As you see in the video the depth finder shows 309’ while the drone showed approximately 290’. Not sure what the discrepancy is there, I know there’s fine silt on the bottom so not sure if the sonar penetrates that before bouncing back for a reading or just an anomaly with the drone’s ability to determine its depth. Regardless it’s the deepest dive we’ve done on the channel! It was neat to see some life down there! I believe those small fish are sculpins similar to what I’ve seen on the bottom in other deep cold water lakes we’ve searched. Maybe slightly different color variations.
Thank you everyone for joining me on this journey so far! I’ve enjoyed exploring this different side of Maine and having a look in places that can’t readily be seen. We’ve seen some cool stuff and no doubt lots more to discover and find!
If you haven’t subscribed to the channel yet I would greatly appreciate your support and as always thanks for watching! 👍🐟

The sculpins are pretty cool. I did not realize how teeny they were until you captured a sculpin next to what looks like an oak leaf.

So my wife and I used to fish this lake all the time, loved it. We always caught and released and she got me into fishing barbless hooks. We actually found a spot 334 ft, absolutely crazy. You should try to find the sunken planes in there from 1944 I don’t think they ever recovered them.

Would love to see you guys explore Lake Willoughby in Vermont. Supposedly it close to 285’ deep and rumor has it, it’s connected to Island Pond. Another rumor was that a farmer in Island Pond lost some cows in the lake and their bodies ended up in Lake Willoughby. Big Lake Trout in Lake Willoughby also. Thanks for the sights.

@@MFEGoingDeep I'm not sure if it's a protected area or not, I recall when I used to live there that it's considered a protected war grave as the pilots were British and they prefer to leave the remains where they are instead of bringing them home like we tend to do in the US. I'm sure there are lots of boats and things down there to look at, I was surprised to see how sandy the bottom is, I assumed it would have rocks like everywhere else in Maine.

what a barren silty wasteland... how are fish supposed to thrive without any habitat cover?
@MFEGoingDeep
@MFEGoingDeep 13 күн бұрын
Most of the larger fish are hanging out in the wide open water like 100’ down chasing schools of bait. They’re thriving, they’re just literally swimming around in the vast open water. When they require structure they seek it out. Otherwise they go where their food is, which depends on water temps and plankton type stuff that those eat.

@MFEGoingDeep
@MFEGoingDeep Ай бұрын
The shortest answer I can come up with sounds like mostly glacial movements and natural rock erosions over time carving out the deepest areas as the lake was forming which were then filled with melt and runoff however many years ago. There’s actually a few lengthy explanations I found for it with a quick search online, it’s pretty interesting!

Is it harder to control the fifish at that depth because you have so much lead cable out?
@MFEGoingDeep
@MFEGoingDeep Ай бұрын
I think what happens is when it’s straight up and down in deep water and the drone is parallel with the bottom the tether has some stretch and spring to it and doesn’t spool as freely with a more abrupt angle over the side of the boat and down. Any movement in the boat up and down or movements when piloting the drone that aren’t strong enough to pull more tether off the reel it causes some up and down movement sometimes as it’s attached to the tail end. Usually once I have more of an angle in the line after moving around some I don’t notice it as much.
