I agree! It wasnt a BAD movie, but I didn’t like how it just jumped in. Unlike some of the newer Star Wars films where I found myself watching Joe Rogan instead 😂 I think I went in with a bit of a bias as well, expecting more of Lovecraft but instead getting what was basically a Kaiju movie. Definitely didnt hate it though.

@@Miller1989 Yeah, that tends to happen when you have a shit ton of movies that come out every year. It's not about whether there were great movies that aren't from Disney in previous years, it's about how a stale as fuck Superhero generation has started ruining film. Superheroes as an idea are fucking amazing, MHA, Codebreaker, DC's Joker, Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, Shyamalan's Unbreakable/Split/Glass, and so many more, whether you like them or not are great ideas, but at the end of the day, all casual movie goers care about is when the next Infinity War saga is coming out and they will pay for 10+ rinse and repeat cash grabs if they have to just to get it. It's a problem that has to do with milking something that is so much greater than the casual movie goer realizes. That's why Disney becoming a monopoly is bad, because they not only milk a genre, but they milk there surface of it, never daring to explore the more interesting and thought provoking possibilities that rest deep within the genre. They've done that same thing with Star Wars, listen I like the new Star Wars trilogy, I would even go to say I really like it, but does it do ANYTHING new for Star Wars, yeah, here and there, minor things that don't really matter, but never anything big. There's so much to tap into with the franchises that Disney controls, but they never do explore the vast and incredible possibilities behind the franchises they own. That's what is hurting film more and more these days.

I actually thought the opposite! It felt like a cheap cop out to me, I feel the movie was at its best when it was an underwater "gravity" - humans vs the elements with a few centimetres of steel between you and a painful death. The big monster felt like Cthulhu without any of the subtlety and finesse of Lovecraft's work. It felt like "Hey remember what Cthulhu looks like? Let's reuse the design", without the meaning behind it. Even though the monster kind of bummed me, the ending lost me completely, it felt cheap and unearned, to have a "hero" moment when plot armour finally decides to go.

Honestly, for the most part of the movie i was on the edge of my seat needing to know what is gonna happen next, which not a lot of movies are capable of doing. Being plot-driven and the fact it starts 'in media res' really took this movie on another level. In my opinion it's not at all like character development was missing, it's more like the creators wanted even bigger emphasis on the plot. Idk but it feels like this movie didn't deserve to be dumped in january and they could have promoted it way better
@MIZZKIE
@MIZZKIE 4 жыл бұрын
TBH some movies don't need character development. Getting the deed done is all that matters. As long as the plot is interesting and the characters not annoying, that's enough to satisfy me. Rogue One is a perfect example. It was a very plot-driven movie. It was the mission that mattered, and if you've seen the other Star Wars movies, (SPOILERS) you already know that all of them are gonna die. (END SPOILERS) The characters were already developed to begin with, so why expect more? Character development takes away time from the precious run time, and some movies don't necessarily need it. Especially in B-movies I'd rather they spend more time on the action than develop characters we're not gonna give a damn about.

I loved how much aware of his inspiration this movie was. The Descent, Lovecraft and Alien are explicitly quoted, even though they were visual quotations. I think it needed a few minutes more to develop its characters (for example that damn bunny detail, which I'm sure it's somewhat explained in some deleted scene, really drew me crazy).
@AlirioAguero2
@AlirioAguero2 4 жыл бұрын
The bunny was a nice touch, I think. Some people have toys and objects they are especially attached to. It can be for the fact they come from their early childhood or maybe remind them of someone they loved. In an isolated situation like this that object can feel even more alive and important. I like how the movie didn't make a joke out of it, even if the character himself is supposed to be the ''funny guy'' of the group.

There are literally networks of tens of thousands of thousands of Bowie's and underwater sensors at any given time, distributed around the world, collecting real time data solenity, PH, ocean currents, temperature, sonar data, etc. We may have mapped a good chunk of space. But we still don't know if there could be life under the ice of Enceladus or Europa, or have a final picture of why the sun's corona is hotter than it's surface. Either way, both places are cool, fascinating, and utterly fucking terrifying.

Yeah it is... but the fact that they did nothing with that concept, it couldve been any other monster. The reason I watched this movie was because I saw Cthulhu was in it. But he was just wasted. Its such a brilliant twist, if they added more things from the mythos and were more focused on the characters, it wouldve been amazing. Annihilation is a good example of cosmic horror that this movie couldve followed. An underlying meaning to this movie could ve added so much depth as well.
@8mmkyle865
@8mmkyle865 3 жыл бұрын
And also I found this. It's suppose to be Cthulhu but they didnt decide on that until post production. Up till then, it was just an undersea monster. "The alpha creature was never explicitly named Cthulhu in the film, but only named and confirmed by director William Eubank, after principle photography of the film was completed. In fact, the creature was code-named "Behemoth" and incompletely designed during shooting, and was not even decided to be the Lovecraftian monster until post-production."

When the crew all first assemble in the central control room - the boot up sequence sound, sampled from old hard drives, and originally used in Alien (1979) can be heard. The little creature they capture is called a "clinger." Kristen Stewart shaved her head for this role Against expectations, Smith (John Gallagher Jr.) survives the entire movie, despite wearing a deep-diving suit with the unlucky number 13 on it. Actors wore airtight suits for the underwater scenes, making it difficult to hear the director's commands. Each suit weighed about 140 lbs (63 kg).

Just saw this movie, I really enjoyed it... My Personal Rating: 7/10 Cons: 1. Not enough screen time for the main monster and its offsprings 2. The news headlines in the opening credits gave away too much of the plotline...kind of spoils the movie.. 3. Wanted to see more creatures (both regular Deep sea creatures and fictional ones) and TJ Miller should have survived...killing him off was too predictable... Pros: 1. The main monster (the Queen Cthulhu or Kraken or whatever it was) had a good screen presence, it actually had character 2. Excellent storyline and good direction 3. Career saving movie for Kirsten Stewart, she did well Give me more creature features please...

I’d been wondering about this movie since watching a few different trailers during the latter half of last year, and my best friend mentioned it to me too. Now after watching both Jeremy and Chris’s reviews, this sounds right up my alley. I’m 100% onboard and I think I’m gonna go watch it when I’ve got a free moment tomorrow! Edit almost 2 years later: I ended up watching this TWICE in theaters during its run. I went once by myself and loved it, and so I told my dad, “Hey, you’ve got to see this movie!” And so I took him to see it a few days later and still had a blast with it. I just bought it on blu ray and I’m looking forward to watching it again tonight, this time with BTS extras just to soak it all in. It goes right up there for me with Pandorum and Color Out Of Space in terms of great overlooked movies.

First act felt so choppy to me ie. random shaky camera moment and awkwardly rushed transitions, HOWEVER I really enjoyed this movie. Didn’t feel like I wasted money on it and I’m glad I saw in theaters! Well said, Chris! Solid review!

I call this type of film isolation/exploration/survival genre. Started with Alien/Aliens, you've seen it a million times. This film was alright though

Underwater was a great film and my one and only beef with it is, we get 6 - 8 characters to watch out of like 316 crewmembers.

This was the first movie I've seen him in while aware of all the T.J Miller jokes, and I have to say his comic relief was really satisfying and warming in this film.

just watched this..I am blown away..maybe I'm overstating or maybe its just the mood I'm in but this movie is incredibly underrated..excellent horror movie..you could remove the creatures from the plot all together and it would still be panic attack inducing..the creatures just add extra flavor to an already nightmare fueling situation

If they would re-release older film without messing with them, I would start going to the theatre again. Like Sphere, Abyss, Event Horizon, Alien, Predator, Robocop, etc. I'd be in the theatre every week.
