Spectacular footage, you’re very talented! I’ve never seen the creature @ 6:35 before - looks like a flying (well, swimming & floating) feather duster..
@BackOnElectone
@BackOnElectone 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The creature at 6:35 is actually feather crinoid that you would see a lot on coral. But in my case, one of the diver either accidentally kick the coral, for fin too hard to push the crinoid off the coral so the crinoid has to swim to find some place else to land. But yeah, you rarely see them float in the water.

You’re most welcome I’m really enjoying your channel. And thank you for the naming the curious creature! I’m sure the crinoid wasn’t too happy but I for one am grateful that it was inadvertently disturbed as now I’ve seen it! Are they typically darkly colored like that or are there as many colors of crinoid as there are corals? Cheers

great footage, you are very skill, I am a beginner in submarine footage and up to now I am simply using a gopro which has a lot of limitation. So I am considering to buy a real camera and the LX100 retained my attention. One question, did you use a red filter while shooting at wide angle or did you correct post prod cause your color are very good
@BackOnElectone
@BackOnElectone 9 жыл бұрын
guigoune75 Thanks! I did experiment with Magic Filter, but I ended up not using it because the custom white balance is sufficient. The color profile I use is "Scenery", that will bring out the blue. The only post processing I did is highlight, contrast to balance thing out a bit. It's a big step up to goPro for sure! The Sony RX100IV is a good option if you're low on budget for housing. But I heard that its custom white balance is not great. The LX100 require different port for different job, so the cost could add up, but not as bad as a dSLR.

BackOnElectone Thanks for your reply, it helps, indeed the nauticam housing is quite expensive for me :( so I am going to maybe looking for Ikelite housing (any though about it ?) which is less expensive, I like this LX100 really, it has a great look and performance, but your videos is the first I see using the LX100 underwater and it convince me. I have look also the RX100 from Sony but despite a great performance announced, I am more convince by the big sensor of the LX100. Thank you again.

guigoune75 I used Ikelite housing for the Panasonic LX-7 before. I hated it. The metal cursor button at the back cause sore thumb because they're so close together. The dial on the Ikelite housing is not smooth, some rely on a "J" type of hook that you have to keep fishing to turn the dial. If you are shooting video, you need to be able to change iso while the video is rolling, Ikelite housing is not going to let you easily do it. Nauticam is very ergonomic that you don't have to look at the camera to adjust setting. If you're going to keep the housing and camera for about 5 years, I suggest go with Nauticam.

+Oliver L Hi Oliver, I used the Nauticam CMC for anything around 3 cm, anything around 10cm, I used the I-Das UCL-01 (+4 diopter). I also used Bluewater/Dyron +7 for those nudibranch that's around 6 cm. Yeah, I bring 3 diopters, which could be too much. For anything around 2 cm or super close up, I stacked the +4 or +7 on top of the CMC, but have to get really close and stable. You can see the result in my nudibranch video. I think I will stop using the +7 because the image quality is not great, tend to have chromatic aberration. Hope this help!

Thanks for watching! I shoot in manual focus mode with peaking on. I use "Scenery" color profile, but do custom white balance before I start every shot. I follow the setting here since it's a very complex camera: cameraergonomics.blogspot.com/2015/01/lx100-setup-part-3-setup-and-rec-menus.html

Steve Buckley Hi Steve, thanks for watching! I spent 10 days in Anilao and did a total of 33 dives. Almost 4 dives per day and the last dive of the day is always night dives. The Nauticam housing is really ergonomic so operating the camera gets easier after the 3rd day.

Great Video. How did you get such stable shots? Are you using a tripod? If so which one? Thanks
@BackOnElectone
@BackOnElectone 9 жыл бұрын
+Brad Mirman Hi Brad, I tried using home made tripod but didn't work out most of the time because the creature a moving a lot. I did quite a bit of post processing (Adobe Premiere + Warp stabilizer). But to get good result, the original footage need to be as smooth as possible. Most of the time if the dive is at sandy bottom, I would kneel or sit on the bottom to get my shot. Anilao diving is very easy so that helped.

+BackOnElectone Thanks for the quick reply. I am thinking about getting the LX100 and Nauticam housing. Been using Gopro Hero 4 Silver but just can't get the close shots I want. Seems like the LX100 is good upgrade for video. How often do you set the White Balance during a dive? Thanks again for the help and keep up the good work
@BackOnElectone
@BackOnElectone 9 жыл бұрын
+Brad Mirman Hi Brad, the LX100 will be a big step up from goPro in term of flexibility. To cover macro and wide angle, you do need to get the correct accessories, and the price do add up. So it's something to consider. I set custom white balance before every shot, it would only take me 5 seconds or less to do so (use hand or white/gray card for reference). I don't set white balance base on depth because light condition changes every seconds, like cloud moving in/out, visibility, quality/strength of sun etc. I have link to a Wetpixel section that have detail info about my LX100 setup, so look at my other videos and the link should be there. Hope that help!

How did you manage to keep the video so still?
@BackOnElectone
@BackOnElectone 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching my video, here is my response to similar question: "I kneel at the bottom to stabilize myself. There is a bit of post process as well. Anilao (and Lembeth) mostly have easy divesites with sand bottom so you can find spot to kneel. Also, hold your breath while shooting otherwise you would go up and down. This technique has limit, so you can't shoot pygmy seahorse and clownfish eggs, or anything that require you to hold your camera above your shoulder." Hope this help!

Hai, did you use tripod for this kind of shot?
@BackOnElectone
@BackOnElectone 4 жыл бұрын
No, kneel on sandy area to get the shoot. Most macro diving environment have clear bottom that you can do that as long as you be careful and check to make sure it's clear. If you want to see the result of shooting with tripod, check out my Tiger Beach video.

HI Tor Panlerd, I answered the question below in the comment section, there are some tips too. Here is the short answer: "I did quite a bit of post processing (Adobe Premiere + Warp stabilizer). Thank you for posting this video! There aren't many LX100 underwater videos on KZbin. I've been filming underwater on Canon point and shoots. But Canon's complete ignorance of 4k in consumer cams now brings me to a point where the LX100 in a Nauticam housing becomes a quite sexy product. The only thing I'm really worried about is the white balance (Canons have an excellent underwater wb). Your footage looks really great and you write you all achieved it by setting the cam to a profile called "Scenery". How deep does it do a good job? Is it very complicated to do manual wb while the cam is inside the Nauticam housing? Thank you for your help! Andreas
@BackOnElectone
@BackOnElectone 9 жыл бұрын
+Bluewavefilms Hi Andreas. The LX100 is a really capable camera until 4K 60fps become common, so it's a good bridge camera for now without spending more than $4000 for the whole set up. To answer your question, the speed of white balance is very fast, if you look at the back of the LX100, there is a WB button (right cursor), once you press that, you just press up to get the one button read of the white balance. The white balance work really well in tropical water. I just move to Florida recently and I found that 60 ft or so you would still get good color, depends on visibility. I recently did wreck dive between 90 to 120 ft. I found that the custom white balance would still read, but the result will still be wash out color. So my next step is to put a red filter on and do custom white balance, I think that will give better result for really deep water. I will test it out in next couple weeks. The LX100 price is really cheap now, so I would suggest buy the camera fist, play with it as it's an excellent land base camera with its very fast and sharp lens. Once you confirm it's the camera you want to bring into water, then research on the housing, port etc.

+BackOnElectone Thank you for the quick answer. It sounds like the white balance won't give me any trouble if it is that easy and fast. And 60 ft should do for most shots. Well, Christmas is near. It seems it's about time for me to give myself a present. :-)

+Mike Gerrie Yes Mike, like I said, GH5 is around the corner so it might have 60 fps 4K. But if you absolutely need to get a 4K camera before April next year, then the LX100 price is very low now due to the holiday season.
