UNDERWHELMED!! Pebeo Fantasy Prisme Paints Review

Today I decided to review a collection of the Pebeo fantasy prisme paints that are supposed to leave the paint with a magical honeycomb texture. Unfortunately I was very disappointed in the Pebeo fantasy prisme paints! I found the finished effects to be very inconsistent, subtle, and just overall not what I was expecting from a paint that is called 'fantasy prisme'. The Pebeo fantasy prisme paints may possibly work better for jewellery making, however I think when using it as a regular paint, whether pouring the paint on or brushing it on with a paint brush, I think you can get very similar results with a wide range of different paints that don't promise an amazing honeycomb textured effect. But let me know what your thoughts were on the Pebeo fantasy prisme paints, do you use them often and enjoy them? I'd say either put a base layer down, wait for it to get tacky then get more colour on, cornflower may help for painting or canvas with gesso base...?

Like some others have said you really need to stir for at least a couple of minutes (the gloppy stuff in the bottom needs mixing through it thoroughly) and they react best when dripped together. You can actually achieve some really neat effects with it.

Starting out with the Pebeo Vitrail and dropping the fantasy in it works great! It's expensive but it goes a long way. The glitter medium they sell is yet another product to drop in for added cool affect.

I have used this paint before it can be difficult to work with sometimes you have to stir it for a really long time use a toothpick and just apply a little bit of heat to make the honeycomb effect come out. Try it again Ant it's difficult to work with but it's made for small pieces

You do NOT need any heat. Just stirring very good and apply it on smooth, non-soaking surfaces (no paper!) With a pipet or wooden stick. If it is too thin, no honeycombs will appear. We use it for enamels etc and get amazin effects

Hi Ant thanks for this video. Just like you it’s the sort of thing I’d want to get. The name alone Prism Fantasy would have me. As usual love your videos, you always manage to bring joy. It may be worthwhile trying it with a white standard acrylic paint pour on the canvas first and then add the colours to see if the water based acrylic separates the oil based ones….could be worth a whirl??

I got a couple of these the other day (clearance shelf 2x1 @ $2.50 no wonder). They have a bit of a learning curve and they work better with small pieces and they work better when you mix them with the other paints and it laso likestobelaid on the thicker side. If you apply a bit of heat the honeycomb texture becomes more present. Oh and I also had to put em' in the vibrator mixed with a bit of thinner for a couple minutes because it was pretty dense (and chunky) in general.

I just think they're quite a chew on of a paint 😆 I can imagine you can make nice things with them but they are sooooo limiting for a paint, I reckon you could easily get similar effects with other pouring mediums and they would be a lot easier 😅

Don't move it around too much. Try dropping little pools into other wet paints and they blend and honeycomb. They work best when they are pooled, not spread out.

I agree, I am finding that many of the special paints especially for pouring, are over priced and underwhelming. Not to mention paint additives, particularly one with the initials A F, horribly overpriced. Thanks for being straight with us, we could use more videos where its not so obvious that the individual has been paid to advertise and "test" products.

These actually are really good paints. You need to work in small sections. If you want to pour with it you should use one of the slick panels it works way better. Don't move the paint around. When you move it that's when you lose the honeycomb effect. You can mix areas with a brush or with some kind of stick. I use these paints in my glass painting projects. Pebeo is the only paint I use for my glass painting. I've Vitrail, vitrea, Prism and fantasy paints. I would use ceramic but that's not my area of interest. I'm sure they are just as good though. If you decide to give this another go, this is what I would suggest. Get some of the 3D fabric paint (I juse Tulip brand here in the US) and make an outline, like a coioring book. Once that's dry in a few hours, then fill it in with the glass paints. I use a silicon brush and basically drip the paint until the area is covered. Don't use too much or it will overflow. Also, if you fill in a large section the paints can turn cloudy this is esepcailly true for the transparent paints. These paints are definiately unique and it took me a few tries before figuring out how to work with them. Drying time: Solvent based are usually dry in 24 but I prefer giving them 48-72 hours. Water based is dry within 24 hours, then you can bake them and they'll be water proof. I will say the water based is harder to work with, you can get a lot more bubbles with them.

@@pamelahuelfer8691 No, it's non-bakeable, but it's fabric paint so once it cures it should be pretty water resistant. I don't tend to wash my glass painted projects. I haven't had any issue with it on an indoor surface with bakeable or non-bakeable Pebeo paints.

I've tried this paint too, as far as I know you cant brush it on, so it's not very helpful that it says that on the box, in fact the box seems very unhelpful all together. From what Ive found out from looking online is that you have to pour it on or use a pipette and either dont touch the paint and let it do its own thing or you can try swiping over it with a tool but to not disturb it too much or it ruins the effect? However I have to say that Ive also been mostly underwhelmed after trying it out and only sometimes get that honeycomb effect... It's pretty hit or miss (I do agree with the other comments saying you have to mix it really thoroughly! Takes ages lol )

Never been a fan of Pebeo, I usually find they are overpriced versions of something else. This reminds me of Hammerite and I think if you added a little bit more silicon oil to Hammerite (it already contains some silicon) you’d get that honeycomb cell effect. I’m so going to try it. I believe these are mainly powder which really needs a lot of mixing to get it right. Too much effort 🤣🤣. Thanks for the video.

You didn’t use it properly. It should be stirred not only when you open it, but also if it sits you should stir it once again directly before using it. The creator of Pebeo was a chemist and the solvent based paints are meant to safely be combined or mixed to create different desired effects, or to create absolute chaos similar to paint pouring. However, while the end result somewhat resembles paint pours, the technique is quite different. I won’t reveal all of the things I do with mine to create various interesting patterns and designs, but I will give you one little tip.. get some Vitrail (the stained glass effects solvent-based paint) and try mixing it with the eggshell color. You can also mix glow in the dark pigment meant for solvent based paints as well for some fun. HOWEVER, you will be “watering” down the Prisme (or Moon) paint when doing this, so the cell/honeycombs won’t be as prominent. They also make some beautiful fluorescent Fantasy Prisme and Fantasy Moon paints that are a blast to work with. I just wish they would release a red, blue and purple fluorescents as well, but the only others included in other lines of Pebeo’s products are just blue and purple (no red pigment that’s cost effective I guess?). You appear to be fairly creative, but your video was also underwhelming because you it lacked the creativity I see you have in abundance, you just chose to make a criticism video instead of exhibit your talents and creativity. Revisit these paints in the future and don’t be afraid to combine them (not stirring together) or mix them up a bit. Ok I will give you one secret for your hypothetical future video… instead of approaching these paints with the standard acrylic paint pouring technique of tilting, only use what you wish to react with on the hard surface (pre-painted stiff and level canvas work but a mirror or glass are much better in my opinion) and keep in mind that if you make it too deep the cells/honeycombs become larger and depending on what you used beneath it, could even sink below the paint. But finally the actual tip… USE A BELLOWS INSTEAD OF TILTING! Good luck!

oh my! you did it all wrong, mate! i love this paint but you have to stir it well with a lolly stick, then put it on in drops or drizzle it with a tooth pick, just 2 or 3 colours. use on small items, and put it on thickly. don't move it around. try it on washers or use a relief outliner. what a shame if this puts people off using it

I did in fact stir it well and it still wasn't the best. It also said you could apply it with a brush and paint it on thinly, or apply thick pouring amounts. I basically followed the instructions that they gave me and it didn't work very well. Love the fact that you've found a use for it but it wasn't for me. If others enjoy it great, but I think you can get similar if not better results with other paints in my experience.

unfortunately you haven't done enough research on their product😢. prism paints are not used with a brush (possibly you can use a paint knife) but you must first pour the product, because it needs a certain thickness and only horizontally (so not like for the technique pouring) because these paints are a mixture of different types of solvents, pigments as well as different micas and oils. and depending on the proportions there are two ranges, prism or moon which gives two different effects (but can be used together) the paint is always worked in the Brother. Obviously you don't have total control of your product like in a more conventional technique like acrylic, but you can give a slight direction in your colors. Also you should avoid using more than two or three colors depending on the manufacturer, But obviously in art nothing is forbidden 😄 also you have to know that moon "eats" prism, that is to say that as it is lighter and will cover prism (they advise for example to work it with a pipette) also if you are not happy with the beginning of results you can in quotes reset the effect by passing gently with a paint knife or a fan brush. oh yes also do not shake them but mix well with a stick for example because the pearls tend to clump together at the bottom of the pot, so mix well for at least a minute! so I recap: Pébéo prism is used in casting or with a pipette and a good thickness for good results. for Pébéo moon can be used with a brush, pipette and poured. (normally on the bottles you must have small pictograms) don't hesitate to watch videos on their channel for further explanations.😊

It said on the actual product that it can be applied with a brush, hence why I tried that and it didn't work very well. I just found them to be very underwhelming paints as a whole and I feel like you could get better results with different mediums. I also stirred the paints well and still had issues. I'd rather just use something else lol 😅

@@AnthonyCrammen ok weird because on mine the brush pictogram is crossed out 🤷🏻 and the videos on their French channel (because I don't speak English) also said that it's not a special solvent paint. I personally do more in acrylics (I work with Talens Amsterdam, Golden, Sennelier (especially for puree pigments they offer very good products) Lascaux and Culture Hustle) but I like to mix media from time to time. this is where I discovered these two products (prism and moon from Pébéo) and frankly yes the first tests were not great 😅😂 but once you master it frankly you can do great things! on the other hand I never had this kind of effect without solvent, possibly we can make cells with medium pouring with a few drops of silicone oil. but after the tastes are personal and each has our favorite products

This paint really doesn't work well as a "pour" and way too expensive to be used that way, at least for me. I have had really great results with it when I have used it as an accent in a larger piece or on it's own in something small like a pendant. It can take hours to see the final results.

@@AnthonyCrammen Yes it is limiting and painting with a brush never has worked so I don't know why they say a brush can be used unless they mean you can use a brush to glob it on. I have 2 full sets of Ph. Martin's Bombay Ink that I'm trying to figure out how to use. I thought it was alcohol ink but turns out it is acrylic ink.

It's definitely NOT a technique issue. I looked up old youtubes were people have used this paint and those are also really underwhelming and their results looked the same. Sorry you got a dud :(

I'm painting a dozen pendant trays with them tomorrow. I sell everyone I make and nobody around here has ever heard of it, so I have a niche. I've also done what I call fine art rocks with Pebeo, I sold a 5" smooth rock with a big sunflower on it for $45.- Like anything worth learning, it takes some practice. I look at some of them that I made in the beginning of my jewelry journey, and don't put them out. Ludmilla Bakalina makes videos with Pebeo and I learned a lot from her.

Well I read the instructions which said you can paint it on in thin layers....did that, it was awful. I also applied thick layers like it said which was underwhelming. However I'm asuming you're referring to the one verrrry specific way in how to use this paint which I learnt after recording the video. Even if I used it in that way I would still find this paint to be mediocre, I feel like you can get similar/better results using other paints/resins that have a much more flexible application as opposed to the one and only thing this paint can do. But next time you leave a comment Pamela, feel free to keep the attitude to yourself, cheers! 🙂
