I was in Cape Coral when Milton made landfall and my brother had to go out and be on patrol for the Sheriff's office. A tornado passed by where we were sheltering by less than a mile and my brother saw it directly beside him when he was out there. Thank God everyone was ok after that.

I grew up in Cranford, a couple blocks from the Rahway River. We used to joke about getting flood days instead of snow days. Cranford is an old town. Most of the homes near the flood zones were built very sturdy. However, after that storm the town passed laws requiring homes to be on stilts just as you see along the Jersey shore.

Great video! The footage was pretty wild, especially that one with the tornado. But honestly, I think it’s interesting how we're always surprised by extreme weather; it’s like people forget climate change is making these events more common.

I saw a semi get knocked over by a tornado on I-40 in Tennessee. This was back in the 1970’s, so no video. The driver emerged unscathed by climbing out the passenger side cab window. I felt my car slide a bit, but managed to stop and crouch on the floor in the back. The tornado continued south doing damage, but when I no longer heard it, I crawled out and it was gone. The Smithtown Library and lots of other places in the area are still in ruins. It’s an historical area that got hit, doing lots of destruction. Some roads along the shore of LI Sound and tidal areas are still closed. There are plans to reconstruct as much as possible and reroute a few roads that often flood in the rain. I live in Suffolk Co., but far from Smithtown area. In my area, there were a few cases of trees hitting houses. My neighborhood just got a good soaking and a few overflowed catch basins.

I'm lucky I live in mostly safe location. We get lots of rain and storms. But the elevation and hilly terrain keeps tornadoes and floods at bay. I think only one major tornado ever hit here and it just fizzled out shortly after forming. Happened around 30 years ago.

That would only be a problem if they are inappropriate for the conditions. Lightweight structures are safer and more efficient in earthquake zones for example. But they need to be raised from the ground in zones with frequent flooding, and will be problematic where wind is an issue. It isn't about the material but it's aptness for the risk conditions and the cost benefit in the face of likely loss.
