One of the reasons undyne the undying is my favorite boss in the game is for that music. Battle against a true hero makes you feel powerful and guilty for what you’ve done but you know there is no turning back. But it’s also a song of hope for the monsters as undyne is giving her life to save everyone

It also overthrows what the rest of the game treats as a fundamental truth, the idea that Monster-kin lack that core essence that is Determination, which in my opinion makes this the most important part of Genocide, the shit with Chara is a story unto itself, but in the end its not really world changing, nothing about the paradigm of the world is changed knowing more about the shura known as Chara, but Undyne the Undying breaks the paradigm

And, yes, this belief is so strong she's able to generate her own Determination, which monsters aren't supposed to be able to do.

The first time i played undertale when i knew nothing about it, i went just by the neutral route and the song spear of justice kept in my head for days, it was my first favorite. Then i did genocide route and i heard "battle against a true hero"...and i loved it, it kept in my head for weeks. It was not just the song, the moment when i first faced Undyne the undying, the tension, the sadness, the dufficulty... I felt it was just a perfect moment (even though it took me like 3 days to beat her) And you made this two songs at once. Thanks Jonny, you really are the man.

it’s almost like UNDERTALE holds a certain view of violence that such a narrative wouldn’t serve. there is but one fight in which your option to give Mercy is denied, and only because the guy you’re fighting 1) doesn’t feel he deserves it and 2) recognizes the strength it has and that he shouldn’t let himself be susceptible to it. it matters in that moment that it’s the one circumstance where violence is mandatory rather than able to be put aside. to have a situation where your violence is justified is to cut the legs out from under the existing routes.

Battle Against a True Hero says it all: You knew what was coming. But the way it transitions from the buildup to the action is perfect, because there isn't really a transition. Everything immediately rushes in. Reminds me of that one boss battle that's not only super difficult, but starts before you even realize it started. I'm pretty terrible at putting thoughts into words, but I believe this says everything.
