In 2017 I decided to leave a very successful career in social work, I sold my house, had a tiny house on wheels built and found a little piece of land to rent and live off grid , by myself. Although it is hard, especially the winters, I have never regretted my decision, even though I am a lot poorer :)

It has happened to me multiple times. I eventually learned that once that happens your main job is to look for another job. Within an hour after you become unemployed you should be looking at job postings. I used the "Indeed" site and set up daily notifications. I decided I would have to leave my last employer and applied at a new employer 2 days later. It was 2 weeks after I started my job search that I received an offer letter from that new employer. I left the old employer 2 weeks later and started my new job the next day. When you switch jobs you can normally negotiate a pay raise. Then there is normally a 'honeymoon' period where you undergo some type of training and your workload is light. It is almost like starting your professional career all over again. In hindsight, if I had to do it over again I would not stay anywhere more than 2 to 3 years if the work environment had issues. Some 40 years ago people were working at the same employer for 35 years and the retiring. Even if you work at a company like Google or Microsoft, those days are over for new employees.

This is so healing to hear. Right now I am unemployed, disabled and depressed. I'm trying to find my reason to live and I also grieve things I used to do. Surf, bike, climb waterfalls. I'm living off my family's charity now, in a small apartment. I'm trying to figure out how to make money. And also a reason to live and be happy. This was encouraging. ❤❤❤ Thank you for sharing. A big hug to you! You will get better, surely! One day at the time. One minute after the other:) For the extra things to do-I just though, maybe you could write or record something about your passions! And possibly find ways to do, what you did, in at least the tinest way. And why not, share your experience, so others can join. I was learning to dive alongside a group of disabled people-paralyzed, blind or deaf. Man, I felt being more disabled, than they were. They have disabilities, but the disabilities do not have them. They were resilient and so much fun to be toghether. We party like crazy after passing the courses, and they were the most amazing ppl I ever met. Gave me a new perspective in life. You will get there. A big, big hug for now, and wishing you a blessed day and lots of strenght and reasons to smile!❤❤

Being laid off marked a significant change in my journey. I had started saving for retirement later in life, which meant my savings were not substantial at that point. The situation was daunting and unexpected. Facing ageism, I ended up taking lower-paying jobs. However, after extensive research, I discovered a strategy that helped me achieve a $1 million return in 4 years, ultimately leading to a $3 million retirement. Reflecting on this, I’m glad because it led to choices that have worked out well for me

I imagine its as thankless as trying to do a good job for unreasonable, demanding people who seek out medicine. God bless you for doing that job. Just remember, there are men and women all over this planet that are not going to get another year because they’re fighting cancer or have some of their disease. They would trade places with anyone of us in a minute and with their perspective, they understand we are only here for a nano second on this planet. we worry about so many things. Mostly to do with socialization and aging. I mean, those are the things that I said staying into these jobs. go outside and look around, look at the earth 5 billion years old. And we are here for a nanosecond. It’s going to be over in a minimum of 100 years for everyone that’s on the planet right now for the most part.

YT pushed this video to me and coincidentally I find myself in the same situation, although I’m in relatively good health and still live in a big city. Today is my last day with the bank so technically I’m unemployed from tomorrow. 20+ years in the bank and hated it especially in the last few years. You are very brave in handling your operation, move off grid and start a YT channel talking about it. I was at the gym this morning while listening to a psychology podcast. The psychologist said whenever we are in a bad situation, just tell yourself that it’s just an experience. We are just here to experience life. This particular experience that you are facing now will pass so you don’t have to carry it around and torture yourself over and over again. Great advice. I’m watching this while having my lunch. On the way to buy lunch, I saw a severely handicapped girl on a wheelchair. Her arms and legs were twisted. Even her head was twisted and her eyes were looking up. It was obvious she couldn’t even speak or eat on her own. I also saw her family taking meticulous care of her. It’s a very tough and frustrating situation and I asked myself whether I will also be so caring and do my best for this girl if she is also one of my family member. The answer is an absolute Yes without a doubt as I know deep inside I’m still a kind and compassionate person. Then something struck me. I asked myself: if I can be so compassionate and caring towards another person in distress, why can’t I love myself the same way? I know I hated myself deep inside including my mistakes to the point of sabotaging myself and getting into depression. I need to learn to love myself again. I know you are also on a journey of loving yourself again so all the best to both of us! Take care and ciao!

One of my favorite sayings, having been very depressed before myself, is the realization that you have to let go, or be dragged. We are only here for nanosecond on this planet. We are bogged down by the things in front of us every day, judgmental society, bill collectors, the list goes on. But in the end, we are born naturally, we live a life constructed by ourselves, and then we will exit. in 100 years everyone that is alive right now for the most part will be dead. A whole new bunch of people will be here, the seconds will continue. A 5 billion year-old planet. Pick your head up, you have your health and you have a roof over your head. You’re doing very well. Do not compare yourself to anyone. You are on your own nanosecond journey. much respect to you.

Thank you for sharing, it takes courage. I used to be a Policeman and received a bravery award . 4 months after that I was seriously injured whilst acting in the execution of my duty. Received a broken face, spinal injuries including a bone chip in my spinal column. Was keen on outdoors pursuits and never been to hospital...... I spent 5 weeks in hospital, 9mths at home in body cast and had to slowly re-build myself as my muscles had wasted away. 24 years later I am now 57, I run my own contracting business, which basically means i do all the hardwork myself Ha Ha. I still enjoy fishing and diving and go to the gym. I found nature helped me also to re-connect and self heal. I wish you all the best in your continuing life journey. Cheers Mark

Thanks for your story. I also had spinal cord injury. The surgery replaced 2 disc in my neck and four vertebrae were fused together to support my spinal cord. I struggled through. My faith in Christ and my supportive family made it possible. I also came to the same conclusion you did. My old life was gone, but a new life was still possible. Today at 60 years old I am happier than I have ever been. I hope and pray the same for you. God Bless You!

Such kind words. Spinal issues are such a difficult subject. You feel changed but you hardly accept it at first. I didn't get the fusion although my neurosurgeon said I will probably need it in a few years but for now with a lot of specific exercises and a lot of self care I'd I'm managing quite well...the hard part is knowing that some things will not be possible anymore...but many others Will so... it's all about changing prospective. I had a head on motor accident end of 2007. Sustained physical and brain injury. Took me until 2016 to get back to a level of health where I could finish my journey by designing and building the ultimate machine for disabled people. It took 3 years of all my effort and savings. Launched the machine at Motorcycle Live 2019 at the NEC. Was invited to the Manchester motorcycle show on the 30th of March 2020 to sign up my first dealership. On the 20th March my business was locked down, no furlough, government gave me £74 a week when the rent on my home was £800 a month and my workshop rent was £480 a month. I had to give up my home, lost my business and savings and now at 66 I live in a van that leaks when it rains and the government have just walked away. Every day I wake up angry, depressed, anxious but I did nothing wrong and are now having to do work to survive which is crippling me. I wrote to my MP and he told me there are no compensation schemes for people like me who lost everything. Can't see a future, just live from day to day.

My dad needed your device!!!!! He’s almost 98. He wants nothing more than to go back to his lake but in the wheelchair I can’t get in there. A while back, I saw somebody had made a tracked wheelchair but I’m trying to find it. These devices are so incredibly important. Covid was so bad on my mom and the nursing home was a collective idiot about a better wheelchair. I spent $8000 on a wheelchair eventually but they stopped me for five years, resisted like toddlers that don’t wanna go to bed. I even wrote an article for the trade magazine for assistive technologies for disability where I described how the bridge trolls stop everyone from doing good things and enjoying benefits. With the power of every God, I hereby cast out all detriments from your vicinity. We need your machine so bad. I’m asking too much. Please survive. Please heal the moral wound. Please make the device.

TLDR: Thank you for re-igniting my enthusiam for life & change...despite my disabilities :o) For 5 years my illnesses have made me bed-bound 23hours a day, reliant on the strongest painkillers every day & depressed more than I ever thought possible. I used to be fit, strong, vibrant, wild & caring with a career in staff training where I could help strangers blossom in ways they didn't expect, just by caring, nuturing & sharing with them how to learn from each other & trust themselves. This illness came out of the blue & hit me like a frieght train, much like what happened to you. You're telling of your story reminded me that it is like a sliding doors moment, a life suddenly derailed by unexpected disability. Every day cuts me off from nature. I'd moved to a small village on the edge of the city, surrounded by hills, a river, a canal, a park & it's all still there right on my doorstep but I'm unable to leave my house to enjoy it anymore. But watching your story, hearing of the vast changes you've been through, seeing you accept your fragility but still believing in yourself & getting a little stronger day by day..., you've inspired me, you've made me pause & see that your strong heart is what's helping you stay afloat & adapt to what you CAN do, instead of loosing yourself in what you CAN'T do. I love you for sharing, and for reaching out to give what you've learned about yourself, and you're helping me believe in my own recovery more - however long it takes, I won't always be this ill. Thank you for re-igniting my enthusiam for life & change, for showing us how much even your own small changes have put you on a happier path and a more fulfilled life, you've woken something inside me that's as honest & raw as this video is, I don't have a word for that something, but it's primordial & life-affirming for sure. Wishing you & your family wonderful times & happiness xxx EDIT: for spelling

I'm glad to hear that what I went through resonate with you although I can see that life has got a really high toll on you. And you're right, understanding that I couldn't just regret what I lost but I had to learn to be a different version of myself helped a lot. I was teaching yoga before and I've lost so much of my mobility but I decided to put to work what I knew best, how the body functions and today i still teach but i do it to help people being their better self not becoming the coolest yogi in town. I work with people with spinal fusions, others recovering from injuries and so on. I try to help instead of being performative... I'm not sure I'm explaining myself well but I hope you get what I mean cause you are right, accepting is the key and mindset lifts u up. Hang in there, hoping you manage your life well always. I've also had a severe pain disease that causes damage. You HAVE to nap daily, to let your body repair as much as possible. Take vitamins that help nerve damage, like the B vits, and E. research it. Stress makes it worse. You look young-my disease started at age 24 and destroyed my career and plans. So I haven't been a normal person since then. I thought my disease would kill me at a young age, which truly changes you and you don't care if there are dishes in the sink that need done. My disease didn't kill me young. So do the things you LOVE. Be kind to yourself as well as others. Good luck to you.

You asked us about days that were turning points in our lives. One of my turning point days was a moment almost 15 years ago. On that day I experienced a head trauma when a boy near me hit me in the head with a baseball bat. I thought it was a mild concussion but even now 15 years later I have frequent (multiple day) headaches. There were brain changes from that head trauma that I could never have foreseen at that time. It altered my life forever and caused a significant disability. I can drive a car, do errands, and take care of my basic needs. But I can't really exercise, work long hours, get hot for any reason, because these activities make me feel violently ill! My life changed forever on that day! I loved your video so much! It was just what I needed to hear today because you emphasized that your life maybe has to be lived differently when you have a physical disability but you can change and pursue dreams and goals that you possibly wouldn't have thought about before. So encouraging! Thank you for this reminder of hope! God bless you!

I'm so sorry to hear that, must have been though to re adapt to a different life but as you say, then we learn to search for other ways to be our best version,, possibly a happy version. Maybe you'll find some interesting suggestions in the next video that's coming out. It's about seasonal disorder but I talk about things that maybe even you could try with your particular condition ( mild Nordic walking and other things) . Anyhow, thanks so much for sharing your experience. It really helps to see we all have our share of hard moments and we all cope differently. Quite amazing how we function. Thanks so much for being here.

Look into hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Unfortunately it isn’t covered by insurance in the US. Look up an interview with the man who broke the record for living 100 days underwater. He had a traumatic brain injury and used a lot of ways to recover. I’m sorry I can’t think of his name.

I'm at 13.44 of the video at the moment... What you're describing is mourning. You have every right to mourn the loss of your leg and the resultant loss of everything else. I lost my hearing as a 6yr old child, I'm in my 60s now and still have days when I mourn the loss of everything. Yes I'm alive and I'm able to do most things but I had dreams I could no longer realise, including a career in military nursing, and life is definitely not as it would have been had I not lost that ability to hear. So I get you completely. Sending love and hugs and telling you to give yourself permission to mourn whenever you get overwhelmed. Take care

You are very honest. Suffering always is a wake up call. When it is physical pain, it is your body telling you it needs attending to. When the suffering is mental, there is resistance to what is (for example you have a job you don't like). If you suppress the emotions resulting from mental resistance for too long and keep pretending to the outside world that everything is fine, your body will react and give you a wake up call, because the body cannot distinguish your thoughts from reality (see "The Body Keeps The Score" by Bessel van der Kolk). I am not blaming you at all, I am trying to help you to see it is a mechanism, everything is related. Once you understand the mechanism, you're safe.

It’s very funny I came across your video , cause I was in my backyard just thinking about the same exact thing , leaving the city , move closer to nature lifestyle . For 32 yrs I’ve been putting my life aside raising the kids , taking care of the home ,and husband as a stay at home wife . My daughters graduated now , recently , one is an engineer the other a nurse. Now I feel stuck Like what’s next for me at 52 and my menopause 😁, while the thought of nature make me smile🤷🏾‍♂️. Again thank you 🙏🏾 🥰🥰❤️
