I would never wait around for a company to make a call while I leave my job before I sign on the line! I went for a high paying UI/UX developer role for JPMC, nearly had it after 3 interviews and still didn’t land it. A company can pull the rug at any moment in the process so I agree 1,000%! Stay sharp and always have the transition timing down.

dude, for real. Like companies do not care at all. I guess you could say 2 weeks after all my paperwork has cleared, and you should be set. Also, not sure what the "software engineer" part of the title has to do with anything. Sounds irrelevant as this can happen with any job and company.

Thank you good information! I keep hearing horror stories about recruiters just giving people the run around. I've been out of the job hunting game for almost 15 years now and it doesn't sit well with me that I may have to start looking with all of these offshore people being hired - replacing tech positions :-(

In Denmark I believe the law is to give 1 months notice. And in general the norm is to give current month + a month. Now that might be the last day of the current month or just somewhere in it. And you'd never leave until you've signed your contract at the new place.
@DevlogBill
@DevlogBill Жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, interesting story and sounds familiar. But in my case it is the norm where your employer takes about 1 month and a half to check your entire background. I work for an employer who is employed by the federal government and this is standard procedure. I am assuming the third party organization decided to perform a deeper check. Because something wasn’t matching. So usually they tend to send your credentials to homeland security, FBI and that can take more than a month, usually 5 weeks plus. The norm for me is 6 weeks. Happy you got over this hump, best wishes.

I have being looking for a job as software engineer for more than two years, and nothing. My life is a living hell. After a few years working as RoR developer I think I’m banned somehow. It’s insane but it’s too much coincidence. It’s mathematically impossible to have such bad luck. Nobody hires me anymore. I regret my decisions of the past every single F day!!

Totally get it. 7 years in and just one interview is frustrating. Trying to explore other options myself because software engineering isn't quite the fit anymore. Keep your head up!

I can’t remember if they used Sterling or not but the job I’m working now had the same issues with being unable to verify jobs and damn near every reference and HR professional i personally knew had left every job 🙃 i gave them W2s and everything and they couldn’t even verify the dates right. It was literally only i believe 3 jobs over the previous 3 years all for a year at least with one of them being fully remote to the point i really only knew my trainer and manager. There has to be a way for a universal system to just start up or something to avoid these issues. I still got the job but i felt that same worry

I made a huge mistake for leaving my first company for excess work after 5 years though. In my second company I was sent home unpaid for 3 months after 4 years and my third company I was fired after 6 months. Just practising kickboxing and watching taekwondo sports and playing lottery with hopes that God can help after being in unemployment twice now.

As an employee you shouldn't worry too much about giving notice to employer when you're changing jobs. I never have. I always make sure the new job is secured and I have my start date that the new employer provides. I don't choose my own start date because really I have no control over that. If that means my former employer gets a few days notice, I do not care.
@chronicle9740
@chronicle9740 Жыл бұрын
I like the way you think. I never understood why employees are supposed to require a two week notice.. when employers don't give any notices when they're going to fire someone, so yeah I do the same thing I don't give any notices to employers, best thing I learned from my Dad is this when I do interviews and the question comes up "when can you start" I always say "sir/ma'am I will be happy to start tomorrow or when ever you require me to start." Right now I'm studying code so I can quit my dead end job in a warehouse that I don't like to one day hopefully get a career in tech. I'm not going to give them no two week notice when I know for a fact they won't give me a two week notice if they decide to fire me, in the field I'm currently in I know I'm easily replaceable to them.

Something quite similar happened to me but it was not due to any clarification, but that the 3rd party company didn't approve the project after I was already hired for this, so they made us wait (I say us because there were 2 more guys like me waiting for this team) about a month and a half, and with little (almost none) communication to tell us what was going on. I used that time to study, and then they tell us the project didn't work so we would be moved to another project. Funny enough, they said "don't worry, it's a general interview" but then it was really a technical interview. Good thing I was prepared and I got into the team, but one of the guys didn't and he was almost fired (the company gave him "a second chance"). I think they shouldn't have lied to us in the first place and tell us we should get ready and prepared, especially if they want us to be accepted in a project. Well... I think we cannot give for granted any job or any company, it's a good advice you give in this video especially for those with children or family that also depend on this job.

Well this story is ended differently than I thought it would when you said you made a mistake. I thought you were gonna say that you quit your job and then all of a sudden they gave you a technical interview that you weren’t prepared for and didn’t get the position. But I’m guessing by the time you’re in a senior position, it’s less likely to have a technical interview than it is for a junior position

It will be fine is great for them but you get left high and dry. The last one I offered a tentative date and said once everything had cleared I will work through it. They said it will go through, which it did but it took longer than expected.

Yep, i dont mess around! I won't give my 2 weeks unless I know 100 percent that i got the job and even then if i have to ill leave on the spot and not give a notice .. depends on the bridge
@jayzg60
@jayzg60 Жыл бұрын
unfortunately this is pretty common in the tech industry. I had a friend who got a tech job with high security clearance that took almost 3 months to clear. They asked him his tentative start date however like you, he didnt set it in stone until after it was cleared . Turned out it was about 30 days after. Lesson learned here is new employers are generally flexible even if they do not appear to be. They of course would like you as soon as possible but a reasonable understands you can just jump through loops and abandon your previous job. If they really want you, they will hold out for a little longer than they initially wanted. And if they are not willing, that is a red flag for you

If I know I want to leave a job I usually save about 20 days of holiday. I start my new job on the say day I start my holiday and I make sure it overlaps with my pay period. That way I get paid by both employers.

In my state, you are not entitled to any vacation pay even if you give two weeks notice. Some of my coworkers have given two weeks notice and didn’t come into work for two weeks to take their vacation pay. Your manager can walk you straight out the door if you refuse to answer their questions. I didn’t have to worry about any of that nonsense because I was working in a contract position. They didn’t even ask me what my new employer was going to pay me. They knew that I was severely underpaid and wouldn’t even try to match it.

I had a similar issue with Sterling. I had to submit a bunch of extra documents, etc. Luckily I didn't resign from previous job before everything cleared. But yea, I've never experienced a background check and verification having so many issues as it did with Sterling. Especially for a clean background and work history with well established and known employers. All I can point to is widespread incompetence by Sterling.

Truthfully they should have never offered you the job until your background cleared. I work for the government and that is how they do it. It can take up to 3 months for all your paperwork to clear before they actually give you an offer letter.

WTF this is new to me although I changed, like, 9 jobs so far. In such case I would tell them to shove their job where it relieves! I would rather go for some temporary freelancing job for a couple of months until I find a more respectful and worthy company to work for. These sh*t corporate must understand slavery game is over, especially for software engineers. If we raise the bar of the world (which we do) this f**ked world must behave with us!
