great work. this affected my recruitment in baseball. had full ride offers in state. my family would not have been able to afford out of state tuition with a partial scholarship. it was all or nothing. Affects recruiting and opportunity. even for middle class families. as others have said, you know who is on what kind of scholarship. creates animosity amongst the team. this is a real issue and should be resolved. also, a lot of guys who show up with scholarships end up giving them up for the team bc their parents can afford to pay. it should not be that way. it should not be a parents financial burden to aid in recruiting while the NCAA is bringing in millions.

Excellent job, as always, Wyatt. Good content. This is a long overdue explanation of the college scholarship programs across D1 sports. Colleges simply charge too much for the education and housing they are providing. When the lottery system started providing scholarships, tuition dramatically increased. Tuition must be reduced for all students, not just athletes.

Clemson baseball HAD the Academic Common Market for student/players from out of state and my son benefitted from that tremendously. Now that is gone and if you look at their roster....there arent many out of state kids on the team. Mis State offered and had a dollar amount tied to that for Georgia kids with a 26 ACT score. My son basically went 3 years (drafted in 2018) for free playing baseball @ Clemson with a combo of the baseball scholarship, academic monies and ACM tuition which is very rare. He now has the MLB insurance program to finish school once done with baseball to get his bachelors and/or masters.

As a former ACC baseball player. This issue is talked about amongst the players on a near weekly basis. It was always uncomfortable to know that your teammate, best friend and brother on the field may be on more or less scholarship percentage than yourself or other teammates. It was also very frustrating to know that softball (baseballs female equivalent) had nearly half the players on roster but more athletic scholarships. It needs to change but unfortunately I don’t see it changing anytime soon

Baseball and Softball are both considered equivalency sports and both get 11.7 scholarships at the Div 1 level.

This was a fantastic piece. I’m am currently in the process of helping my son choose a D1 school to commit to on a baseball scholarship. I’m having to steer him based on me covering 70% of $100,000 to $300,000. He deserves to go to the best school that wants him most but unfortunately I’m going to have to tell him some schools are just out of my budget. Baseball Scholarships don’t even cover tuition much less room and board.

Now I understand why the afterschool program my son went to is pushing football and basketball so hard for the low income kids even though they have a little league baseball diamond litterally right outside their door and could have made a dominant baseball team. Really really disappointing.

I've watched this 3 times and I agree with you. My son plays 15u majors and does very well. It's been heartbreaking to tell him he may need to put down his bat and glove down because he needs to seek a football scholarship (which he doesn't love but is really good) vs his first love baseball.

Its greed.by not just colleges, but im the mlb has had a hand in this. Of course they love the crazy, global growth of the game and there are so many things in place(some of mlbs direct doing) that contribute to american players(as a whole) being at a disadvantage in compared to other countries.

I went to Oklahoma University on a half scholarship for baseball back in 1985. Me and another guy had to split a full scholarship. My parents got half of their pockets picked, way back then even.

College Baseball has a lot of issues. For starters it's not a good sport for colleges north of the Mason-Dixon line. Michigan, for example doesn't get a home game until mid-March due to weather. Northern Teams can't compete with southern teams, which is why 2019 was a record year for viewers of the College World Series - a northern team, specifically Michigan had a Cinderella story. But considering that the last college football playoff game had 22 Million, and the Michigan vs. Illinois regular season basketball game had 1.5 millions viewers - 2.2 million viewers for a championship game isn't really a bragging point. Until College Baseball becomes more equitable in the north - and with a starting date of mid-February I don't know how that will happen, I see College Baseball on a whole continuing to be a second tier college sporting event. (the south possibly being the exception)

One option is conspicuously absent. Pull the sport out of schools. No reason why a profitable sport, which college baseball is, has to be under the umbrella of a school. The sport is able to stand on its own in most cases. Let the schools lease facilities out to a club. Let the club PAY THE PLAYERS and then any student athletes can use the money to pay for their tuition and fees. Of course, that means eliminating the MLB's monopoly, which is likely the greatest hurdle of all; it's also the thing most hurting baseball's growth today.

Softball is the fasted growing revenue sport in college right now. Make Softball and Baseball Full ride. You can also add scholarships to women's soccer or women's track and field. This can help with title 9. At the very least let baseball have 19.7 scholarships. This is roughly 73% scholarship average overall an increase from 43% overall and increase the minimum scholarship to 50% an increase from 25% minimum.

IDK it's tough to make a case or come up with a solution when it would make baseball even more uneven by benefiting schools who can afford to give more money. I think what is really UNEVEN is that college baseball players have to play 3 years before they can be drafted. Same as Football but Football doesn't have to compete with kids coming out of high school for the draft. Basketball often has one and done.

Shocker! A law/mandate in the name of equality actually creates INequality. What else is new? You’d think that there’d be another way to provide opportunities to all races and sexes without having to take away opportunities from one select group. How many thousands(including myself and my family) have had to either take less or take nothing at all because of Title 9 and in the name of equality? It’s not “fair” or “equal” to tell one person no and another yes when the person being told no is just as qualified or more than the one being told yes. Actually, that is the opposite of fair. It’s wrong. Fair is not taking from one so you can give to another based on gender or skin tone. Rant over.

I coached a team of kids that were looking to play fall baseball and couldn’t afford a travel team. It was a 18U team but had a few 13 year olds. A 14 year old player hit a grandslam off a senior in highschool varsity pitcher but that was his last time to touch a bat. Football offered more opportunity as a black player raised by a single mom and coached by his granddad.

Explain to me why football (which I love) should get 85 scholarships? They don't need a roster near that big when only around 30-35 kids ever see the field in a given year. Seems to me they could lose 15 to baseball and it would be great. Or maybe just implement "flex" scholarships that allow reappropriating them across sports.

That’s not how it works. 30-35 players see the field on a small town high school team. In college, it’s upwards of 50 hence why the travel roster is 55ish. All defenses play at least 2 deep at every position in a game and DLine is usually 3 deep. Offense is similar for skill positions along with 2 backup olinemen. Plus, football is a brutal game with more specialized positions. Season ending injuries are much more likely. Additionally, freshman need to be on scholarship so that they come to the school. If you don’t offer the young bucks scholarships, they will not attend that institution and your program will implode. Also, the scholarships given to football are typically done so with the explicit instructions of the donor they can’t just be flexed to baseball. Now I love baseball as much as the next guy. However, it needs to seek out private donations from alumni and lobby the NCAA to raise the limit. Don’t hurt football for no reason because baseball is suffering

Very few college baseball teams make money. if you want more scholarships put more people in the stands and get a more lucrative TV contract. While college baseball has a legitimate gripe against Title IX as almost no women's sports are in the black, most college football and, to a lesser extent, basketball teams have profits in the millions, thus more scholarships. Whenever the government interferes in a market (Title IX) the results are always disastrous. If you are a female HS athlete and a college or university doesn't offer scholarships in your sport, go somewhere else. Why should any institution of higher education be forced by the government to offer x number of scholarships in any sport? The free market always does a better job at meeting a need than artificially set government parameters. If a school doesn't offer a particular women's sport where there's a demand, some other school will to their benefit.

If it were indeed counted as NCAA revenue, you would see that it generates more revenue than all other sports combined.

State fans moan constantly about Opportunity Vanderbilt and 11.7. Does it create an advantage? To a degree it does. Do you know what does not create an advantage? Vanderbilt's high academic standards, class workloads, it's tuition and cost of living, being a small private school. I can go on. As far as I am concerned, Opp Vandy only levels the playing field for them with other SEC schools. I hear a lot of people complaining about Vanderbilt’s scholarship advantage, but I’m just not seeing it. According to this video, the median award for a need based scholarship at Vandy would be $53k meaning they’d still be out of pocket for $14k a year. A quick Google search shows the in-state tuition at State is $9k. The other schools featured prominently in this documentary (wonder why?) are similar so Vandy has no advantage over those schools at all considering a non-scholarship recruit would have to pay more to go to Vanderbilt than he would at other schools in the league. It seems like Georgia has the biggest advantage but since they’re not a consistent challenger it’s not worth carrying on about. The only real advantage Vandy would have is by recruiting a kid from an impoverished background, but as this documentary points out, there are very few of those kids today. Most ball players are from middle class backgrounds meaning that most Vanderbilt baseball players would likely be receiving much less than the median amount suggested. Definitely would be nice to see some change to the 11.7 but the back half of this documentary is really misleading.

I know two different women that got scholarships for rowing at two different schools that had previously never rowed a day in their lives. They were both rich, no need for an athletic scholarship and certainly hadn’t earned one. People prop up women in completely nonsensical ways and then pat themselves on the back as if they’ve made such an incredible difference in the world

They make money now. N I L has ruined college athletics. The way the portal is now is also ridiculous. They have players in some sports that are in their 3rd season and playing for their 3rd different school. Some because they don’t start but mostly chasing the dollar. This can be fixed but they are taking too long. They shouldn’t be making a dime on their name or image or likeness. I don’t have the solution but IMO they should have to pay every player and every player should make the same amount. As long as they keep it like it is (no rules) it’ll never get fixed and it won’t be fair. I’m not saying that football players and beach volleyball players or baseball and tennis players making the same. I’m all for those guys making money. They deserve it.

This video is playing games with statistics to exaggerate the financial positives of NCAA baseball. Less than a half a dozen programs turn a profit, so college baseball players are not generating significant profits that are used to pay for other sports. On the other hand, 11.7 scholarships is too few, but that's just the world of Title IX and opposition to increase scholarships from conferences, who aren't good in baseball, like the Big Ten and the many tiny athletic department budgets of the more than two hundred bottom feeders in Division 1 baseball.

I’ll agree travel baseball has caused a dilemma in baseball but I can’t agree it’s pushing kids out who can’t afford it. There are low budget teams with volunteer dads who just charge tournament fees and play only local tournaments who don’t need to travel every weekend. I don’t think it pushes the black community out. In reality no sport will ever be racially 50/50. Look at basketball 16% white players, nfl has 25% white players. All sports has a travel or aau component that costs more money than recreation ball. If the kid truly loves the game find a team that can fit your financial income.

Your premise has been widely discussed. Your ability to avoid the fact that baseball is historically a father-to-son sport and statistically black youths are far more likely to grow up without a father is tragic and only fuels the problem you claim to care about. Since 1968 fatherless homes have more than doubled and among black families it’s significantly higher than any other demographic (census bureau). Your manipulation of facts to avoid this widely known reason for the lack of black baseball players is feeding the problem and doing the opposite of solving the issue. You single out the one (and only) black father you interviewed who said his son doesn’t see kids like him out there. I bet he mentioned the lack of fathers involvement and you edited that inconvenient fact out. It’s a massive discussion in the black community, hence my strong belief that the only black father interviewed brought this up. Football and basketball can be taught far more easily from other kids. It’s truly tragic how hard you try and spin this without discussing the very widely known reason for the disparity. Go to a baseball tournament or showcase, regardless of color… baseball players tend to have male father figures in their lives supporting them and teaching them. Unfortunately young black men statistically do not have male father figures anywhere near the rate they did back in the early 1960s where the marriage rate was higher than caucasians (blackdemographics.com & census bureau). Ps I’ll get out in front of this as well… to anyone that has feelings about these facts, your feelings are not facts. They are just feelings.

Title IX was a good idea, but it was bad in practice. More men want and do play sports. Men's volleyball. men's soccer men's lacrosse, track, swimming, bowling and others get less scholarships per team than women's sports. Not everything needs to be equal to be equitable. It only works that way if you first divide people by group rather than as an individual. Guys who want free college should spend their time following Lia Thomas and conveniently switch to women's sports. They will be better players than the women, and we all know women can have penises. That's a sick thought, but with private colleges costing 80K a year, and academia cheering on the destruction of women's sports and their collective identity, a smart kid who needs free college should take advantage. Bring a buddy or two. They will improve the performance of any women's team. Mayne they'll get drafted to the WNBA

Sure baseball at several schools does make money and a tiny few could make a lot...but definitely not FOOTBALL type money. Hey, if you quit football you could offer more in baseball. LOL Football eats 85 scholarships that then must allow women. The same problem happens with hockey schools. Just a lot of biased crying in this video. Does it suck if you play baseball - Sure. But I do not hear you making the argument for the men in track, cross country, tennis, etc.

Title IX is definitely part of the problem. There are more men than women interested in playing sports, why should there have to be equal scholarship money? It would be ridiculous to require schools to offer equal scholarship money for nursing or engineering. It just takes opportunity away from whichever sex has the majority interest.

Football carries its own weight, i.e. it makes money. Title IX is to blame for this, nothing else.
