@@richardsmith1161 use organic fert to add the nutrients. If your soil is really sandy in the first place, it shouldn't really have too many bumps anyway. The rains will flatten it right out.

1979 as a high school kid, my dad ordered the Z plugs from our Sunday Parade magazine. Lol you brought back some painful memories. I believe it was touted as some exotic miracle weed killer grass.We painstakingly plugged our entire 1 acre yard in In the Chattanooga Tn area. We still own that house and the yard still looks amazing in 2020 with minimal care. I live in central Florida and have St Augustine and wish I had a Zoysia yard, that grass is wonderful in my experience.

I just did a bit of leveling today too. right before it hits spring here in Australia. I had a lot of winter grass grow this over the winter and its the first year that we have been in this place and this time I mowed the lawn I cut it as low as my new toro mower would go to get rid a lot of that winter grass and help the summer grass grow once it starts to warm up in the next few weeks, I needed up using a good lawn soil from a hardware shop and that has worked a treat over this first year to sort of level the lawn but it really just gives it a massive growth spurt and I think next pay I might even put a few pegs in the ground and string line it just because its on a hill and slopes up to down and right to left I want to make sure there is no high spots.

I am on my third lawn care company in nearly 9 years of living here in Florida. Lately since they changed their tech, I’m finding that my st Augustine is now suffering from areas of fungus and also sod webworm plus broad leaf weeds area appearing on areas where the at Augustine was solid and lush. At my wits ends, as it appears most the lawn care firms near me start well but then after a year decline with their service. I don’t expect miracles for my yard, just would like to keep what I have.

I do not know if I can use synthetic sand since we do not have this available, only synthetic and black soil that we use during soding. Other thing Is that my emerald Zoysia took like 6 months to achieve 3-4", some sods aré not growing, only stay Green at 1" So I dont know if leveling Will chokeout those parts.
@jimshorts59703 жыл бұрын
Always used sandy loam for leveling as it’s sort of a sandy dirt, rather than straight sand, which can cause burning in sunny areas if you don’t water frequently. Similar to greens burning up on some golf courses since they have such a high sand content and are obviously cut very low. You can also mix some fine sand into regular topsoil in a wheelbarrow and spread. Prefer to have a much higher soil content than sand. Different in different areas of the country and also depends on grass type.

Just bought a house and the backyard is nothing but dirt and weeds/cover. It’s extremely bumpy and unleveled. A lot of sitting water after a rain. I need to start from scratch. Currently killing the weeds off, but to start the leveling off on dirt, do I do soil or sand in those completely dirt holes? There’s no grass so no dirt-to-grass ratio. Just dirt. Get the grass thick by proper feeding, sun and water and mowing often (2, even 3 times a week if you can get it growing right). Once thick, you're ready to fight. Start mowing tall (4-5"), and pulling carefully and religiously by sections, if not just scouring your yard and hand weeding before every time you mow. You'll get the hang of it, developing an eye and a feel when pulling (so that you get the whole thing-- or a lot more of it), and then decide if the progress is worth the work (it's a lot of work). I've rid most my 5k' lawn of it. There's not enough I really feel bothered by it anymore, and I know what to do and what it will take if and when I care. We'll see what happens this spring.

Mr. Hayne. I have a couple of questions that maybe you can answer. I live in Southern California about 60mi east of Los Angeles, The weather is hot and dry for most of the summer, routinely reaching in the triple digits, and no rain. I currently have a lawn that I inherited from the former owner, and I have been watching your channel for a while. My back yard has no lawn just concreat and a retaining wall that holds a hill back. My front lawn is small. Roughly 2600 square feet. I have numerous problems with watering mainly there was no sprinkler control, and I ended up replacing all the valves and installing a controller. Now that I have had the sprinklers working for the last 3 months, my lawn is nice and green, with LOTS of weeds. Also I have some "big" dips and valleys in the lawn that the former owner has never taken care of. so I need to continue to work on the sprinklers, they have sunk down, below ground level have nice little circular holes and need to be pulled up again, and the weeds need to go, and the ground needs to be leveled. Should I just kill off what I have and plant Zoysia? Would Zoysia be a good choice? Should I really battle it out and save what I have and start weeding. I love the look of your lawn, Wish I had it here at my home. Thanks for your answer.

Hi, what did you end up deciding? I know it was over a [California] winter, but did the lawn make any progress?
@SidebandSamurai3 жыл бұрын
@@johnlong9494 it did to a certain extent. It was all green until winter came. I think that the grass is dorment right now so I am going to spray for weeds in a few weeks using off the shelf products following the directions on the labels. I used a brodcast weed and feed that worked well but to get that really nice lawn I will have to start applying specific fertilizers I have seen in his previous videos. I am still considering ripping up the lawn and fixing the sprinklers but that is a really big project. I have other projects that will come first.

Dismiss NXT is labeled to control torpedo grass in St. Augustine grass. Its sulfentrazone + carfentrazone. Thanks a million for that article on torpedo grass from the newsletter. There was a guy on amazon reviews who said he was able to get rid of all his torpedo by doing 1 application ever week for 6 weeks with the product. Temps must be lower than 85. I've started hitting it right now @ 90 and its browning my grass a bit, but the st Aug is still alive. But in fall when temps are in 70s I'm going to be hitting really heavy with this product.
@TheLawnCareNut4 жыл бұрын
I'll have to look into that - I was using the DNXT but it dinged my St Aug really hard everytime I used it so I stopped.
@johnlong94943 жыл бұрын
I talked to Dismiss. Yes it was labelled, but when it came to Torpedo-grass they didn't seem to be too confident over the phone. Need to remember that it's not the brand, but the percentage of the active ingredients. Sulfentrazone in recommended amounts is safe for St. Aug, and will kill a number of weeds including torpedo grass, but won't take out Torpedo on the first go. Can't remember listing for Carfentrazone. Success may well be something to do with these products being combined. The dude with continued repeated applications may have been on to something, though I'd be hesitant to hit it weekly as that's not necessarily enough time for your grass to give you feedback (in another word, it's RISKY). But I'm glad he did. Now we have some testimony to base our experiments on.

Dirt and flood it, I did mine partially once. Plan to do it again. By flood i mean literally throw top soil everywhere and run a garden hose into it so it looks like a near swimning pool. I also put holes in it (garden hose size) and put the hose under the lawn and flooded it from underneath until the water was coming out and running into the street. This a really moves the soil (under neath as well) which first time will create different low spots on top). Second time more dirt (top soil layer up here) basically in the lows and flood it again from the top. Dont do under it again. If the lawn is established enough it should come back. Unless you dropping 3 or for inches then some areas reseeding. Leaving the grass as long as possible will allow it to still get sun and be above the water / mud surface if you run a simple metal leaf rake through it pulling it up. Also , let it dry out and settle in between first and second. Lot of people level a lawn only to have areas drop again (open cavities underneath) which even after running heavy equipment over can still be there. Flooding from UNDER the lawn exposes them as well because the soil underneath moves, lawn becomes pliable, and the lawn will drop in that space. I reseeded mine and people commented "its not level has dips etc " I was, "i know I'll level it after" . I've found near sink holes, 10" deep and who knows the areas?? Under a lawn. Think of a road bed. If there isnt a solid road bed and you lay tar on top over some years..,, well., Leveling the top of a lawn might be a temporary fix, but you run the risk without making sure under it is solid that you'll be redoing it many times. The flood from underneath speeds up the process so you can do it once and are less likely to have future problems (which I'm sure youve seen some disastrous sinking roads and lawns). . Crazy i know, but no joke. Disclaimer: i dont get paid for this i just did it, maybe something i learned in bridge and dam construction years ago. I hold no responsibility.

How can I fix the ring of grass death in my front yard? The grass has decided it it will not grow properly inside a 12-15 foot almost perfect circle diameter. The rest of the grass is perfect! Thank you!

Any tips on removing that wild Bermuda from St Augustine?
@TheLawnCareNut4 жыл бұрын
the only thing you can do it when it gets real bad is cut it out and resod. or get Provista which is glyphosate tolerant.

Great video👍but for longer grass I use a large push broom to work the sand in, never wet it as it makes it harder to play with but maybe give it a try see if that helps 👍

Alan, a question. We live in a narrow lot home and our St Augustine will just not grow between the houses. My wife says it needs water and I say it is getting too much with the shade and all of the water cascading from the roof. Your thoughts?

St Aug needs direct sun most of the day to live - pretty much all warm season turf is like that really.
