Yes sir. I have noticed over the last two seasons with all the different products I have tried and watering scheduling the thing that has helped my lawn the most is the mowing hands down. The lawn has responded so well to frequent mowing. Whether mowing tall or short just removing just the tips by mowing more often has helped to thicken the lawn, retain its color and over all health of the lawn. It uses up some much energy to re grow after taking off more than 1/3 of the blade. That rule definitely makes a difference and anything below that amount is a good start.

Leaving clippings on the lawn, doesn’t it become thatch on lawn? that u have to remove end of the season by raking. I have cool season lawn and it produce lot of thatch. I hope u answer this concern because I am struggling with it. Thanks
@ir3331
@ir3331 3 жыл бұрын
Thatch doesn’t come from grass clippings, it comes from dead grass blades. You lawn constantly has to make room for new growth, and it does that by letting some grass blades die, and making more. However, if you aren’t mowing often enough and those grass clippings are too long, they will contribute to thatch.

I like the analogy to working out. Some people just work out a little bit and spend tons of money on supplements expecting a miracle. It's huge business, and people just throw away their money really. Same with growing grass or gardening. Master the basics first like mowing, watering and feeding the lawn. Do some dethatching and aeration and weed control and you're like 99% of the way there. Then if you want to buy a super lawn supplement go ahead. 🤘

Crabgrass thrives in Florida they love it it's heat resistant drought resistant , true you do not have to do anything to it but mow it nothing will grow in it because it gets so thick! But Ohio is a little bit different crabgrass doesn't start growing until the late summer plus it chokes your grass out, wish it was as simple as he makes a sound!!!! I also noticed he has a nice flat lawn to mow! I understand why he likes mowing so much, he needs to come to Ohio and mow my yard couple times bet he changes mine!!!!! Mowing has very little to do with a nice looking lawn. Other factors are, shitty neighbors who dont take care of theirs and cultivates weeds out the wazoo. So their weeds seed gets blown into my yard. Another factor is lack of rain and a yard too big to start watering. We go thru droughts every summer, so there are times I stop mowing by mid July because it has stopped growing and turned brown. I do the best I can but it is a loosing battle each year.

I've been mowing my lawn like this for the last 59 years....It definitely works! Also, this time of year, my grass has gone to seed. I like to catch some of it with a bag and spread it on areas that I want to seed. Some of that seed catches and fills things in.

What if you have (living in Louisiana)Bermuda but out in St. Aug and Floritam, and planted in spots Centipede. What level? My grass is struggling from the bad freeze/ ice storm still.

I love mowing my lawn. It's so therapeutic. The sound of the Ryobi, Subaru engine, buzzing in my ear. The smell of freshly cut grass. But most of all. I'm out in the great outdoors of suburbia. A wave to and from my neighbours, and a chat here and there in the process. What more do you want!

Last year I made an effort to mow every week. Kikyu. Yeah it did look better. This year (last season) I'm down the bottom bit of the world. Cut every Monday and Friday afternoon. Before Xmas.... WOW ...it was so tight and even ... neighbour kept coming over saying how it looked like a football pitch...

Great video! I’ve been looking to introduce my dad to the newer side of lawn care and I feel this video may do well to get him interested as he’s looking to buy a reel mower. Thanks for the past input helping me on my own dominating lawn of the block, and I hope this one helps my dad as well. Blessings to you and your family.

When your lawn is too long, is mowing and allowing clumping, but then remowing the clumps to help recycle it ok? Or would you still recommend bagging?

I noticed that I have areas of a yellowish color throughout my lawn. I thought that maybe I need to sharpen my mower blades, but I noticed the grass is yellow all the way to the soil. Is that an issue of low iron? Should I do another application of fertilizer?

Great vid Al! My St. Aug is loving that 7-0-20 stress blend. Got my 1st soil test results and was actually surprised on how well it was thanks to the green county arsenal I’ve been building. I do however have an area where the St. Aug is growing really short (like it’s Dwarfed) Is that something you’ve encountered?

Following the 1/3 rule... if you do get nutty and measure your grass for even just a couple months, trust me, you'll quickly develop the ability to tell at a glance when it's time mow. You'll know exactly what your grass looks like when it starts to get close to the max length to stay within the 1/3 rule without changing your cut height.

I knew about this 1/3rd rule, but never understood HOW to measure until he pulled a stem from the lawn and put it next to a tape measure. I mulch 98% of the time, since I'm up in the Florida Panhandle and we do go dormant during the winter. I even mulch my shrub clippings. Thanks for the comment, I really did need it :)

@The Lawn Care Nut. Question for you. I live in Northern VA with a primarily Tall Fescue lawn (looking great after using your fert's and grass seed "Black Beauty" recommendations BTW!!!). I do have some Poa Annua, something I have never had in all my years at my house, so I have no idea where they came from. Anyways, I am thinking of treating the current weeds with an application of Tenacity now, and then maybe another in 2 months (split application) to kill the crabgrass and such that has been pestering me for the past few years. Plan is to overseed in the fall, and then early next year before the temps hit 55* I was going to start with Prodiamine to prevent the Poa Annua and other weed seeds from even starting. Is there anything I should tweek in this plan? I actually have time to hit my lawn hard with the attention that it needs, but don't want to do anything that would harm it more than it would help.
