I used to walk on my toes as a kid, kind of bouncing. As I aged, I began to walk duck-footed, no longer on the toes. Now in my mid 50s, I realize that I lack internal rotation of my thighs, either caused by and/or causing hip impingement. I also never fully extend my hips when I walk (only when exercising or when consciously doing so) because of the impingement and because it feels foreign. Just to walk normally requires intent and effort. I am also in a constant state of anterior pelvic tilt, meaning my hamstrings are constantly stretched and my glutes are weak (I've never had an ass, something that has haunted me since my teens when a girl at a track meet commented on my great arms, but her friend rightly said I had no butt). My right hamstring is always sore. When looking at my posture from the side, I am ass out slightly, leaned forward, with prominent rib flare. Nothing is stacked correctly or in alignment. The lower ribs ache where they are flared in the front, and where tight in the back (I mistakenly thought my kidneys were aching). Now I just need to undo what can be undone and learn to mitigate the rest. Kaiser is little help: one look at my hip x-rays and the doc throws up his hands and says I have to live with the impingement.

When you say not to squeeze the abs, is that the same as disengaging them? With my rib flare I also have anterior pelvic tilt from not engaging my abs and glutes, I thought that the abs and glutes should be engaged because that's correct posture?
@ZacCupplesPT2 жыл бұрын
Squeeze = think forceful contraction. Like actively tensing them up. I want the abs to work from the exhale, more reflexively So no muscles should be actively squeezed at all times. We are meant to move, not necessarily hold any one static posture. That's why there really isn't a "correct" posture so-to-speak. Hopefully that clarifies

hi zac, thanks for providing this explanation on turns, i alway thought the turn starts in the si joint where the L sacrum is not turning back and to the left (no counternatation in the left). isn't this the root cause for the rib flare in the left? can u please advise drills how to rotate the scarum to the left (early propulson on the left) when the default is that it rotates to the right constantly? thanks again for your brilliant explanations. great stuff!!!
@ZacCupplesPT2 жыл бұрын
The turn likely starts through the entire viscera. That runs from L1 on left to R sacrum. So it likely all happens together. The wise move is to still start here, as the act of breathing can improve some of the movements within the pelvis

Good one Zac, On the 1st execise around the 8.00 mins mark, you say the rib that is for a left flared rib and then it looked like you stuck your right leg out with teh right elbow at eye height; just checking was that demonstration for a left flared rib and not a right-side flared rib? Also is there any way to deal with a flared rib due to lack of internal hydro-static pressure so its lacking a 3-D motion due to lack of fluids which means its fixated in that flared look and unable to get adequate bucket handle motion due to lack of fluids providing internal pressure?
@ZacCupplesPT2 жыл бұрын
Yep. So in that case you are turned right, but breathing is turning you left when you say lack of fluids what do you mean by that?
@beckaflynn11282 жыл бұрын
@@ZacCupplesPT Thanks Zac, when you say turned right do you mean the pelvis is turned right so lumbar spine is also bent/rotated to the right? About lack of fluids, normally we assume the skeletel structure is holding up the tissue but actually its the fluid that is mostly within the fascial layers. I saw a article on PRI about it but I cant link to it. It mentioned about water/fluids. But im just wondering if internal scarring can displace that fluid and your exercise, which I think is a great one btw, would be rendered inefective if some internal damage where the fluids are not present as would be in a normal person. Hope my explanation was adequate, if not dont worry lol, Ill try and dig out that article.

Can i exhale with my nose instead

It’s harder to move enough air to get rib movement through the nose. This can be good if you are someone who has a lot of tension at rest through

I already breathe through my diaphram but still have this, why arent u telling us it can be a posture problem. Because it's not? Either way best way to fix it is to eliminate the root. Ill try the exercises though thanks

Breathing and posture are synonymous. You can’t separate the two. Unless you had an issue at the higher cervical levels, everyone breathes through the diaphragm. It doesn’t mean that you do so in a strategy that maximizes your movement, hence why I recommend what I recommend. I hope that clarifies!

Hi Will this be permanently fix my rib flare if i do consistenly for a while or do I have to do it everyday for the rest of my life?

Ideally you want to progress to harder variations in training then what is shown here. Think of it like a diet. You don't eat a perfect diet then go back to junk food when you get the body you want. Things like this could be helpful - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGnLaqCZltF2h7M&t

So you’ve gotten medically cleared by a doc for the shortness of breath? If so, I would start with these moves for most people
