It is Saturday evening, and ambulance crew Katie and Sarah race to help a man who has suddenly collapsed. The call handler on the phone with his distraught wife must stay cool-headed and tell the woman and her daughter how to perform CPR.
By midnight, Saturday night drinking is beginning to show its impact as calls pour into the control room, the nerve centre of the service, reporting numerous fights and violent attacks. Controller Glennis has to juggle her time between trying to help a crew who have been searching for an elderly man who has fallen in an alleyway and a high-priority call for a street brawl with reports of a man being hit with a baseball bat.
Paramedics Natalie and Nat face an agonising decision of whether to move a woman in advanced labour or face the risky prospect of delivering the baby at home knowing she has already had a stillbirth.
Welcome to Bluelight, the home of action packed Police, A&E and emergency tv shows. 🚔🚨

Aside from the amazing ambulance crew, Joan was the main reason her husband survived. The fact she was able to drag his dead weight onto the floor and do continuous CPR with guidance over the phone from the operator whilst scared out of her mind until the crew got there is what gave him his fighting chance. She started the saving efforts and made it so the crew had somewhat of a chance to resuscitate him, had it not been for his wife he more than likely wouldn’t have survived. If you’ve never done proper cpr before just know it is extremely physically difficult/taxing for even the strongest of people out there, yet another reason I’m so impressed by his wifes’ actions. Incredible.

You are so absolutely correct! People who have never done it will never understand! So many of them have the mentality that it can’t be that hard or physically taxing because it doesn’t “appear” that what you’re doing is very strenuous. I’m a nurse and run EMS for my local ambulance service and have done my fair share of codes/resuscitations. Sometimes I am sore the next day. This sweet lady doing it by herself for 8 minutes straight until the ambulance arrived and looked like it was nothing, didn’t look like she even broke a sweat, is true example of the power of adrenaline and a true testament to how you can do even the things you never thought possible in a desperate/emergent situation, especially when it is standing between you and the life of your loved one! She is a champ!! After 8 minutes, without her doing CPR, they may have had a very small chance of reviving him, BUT he most certainly would have had severe neurological deficits or possibly brain dead, so his wife most definitely saved his life and is the reason he may go on to enjoy more of his life with her! You’re his hero, Joan!!

@@davidshanholtz6674 my friend of 42 years husband had a heart attack outside his house as he was unloading groceries from the car. He didn't make it. 3 months later my best friend had a heart attack in the exact place her husband did but I witnessed it. Her neighbor performed CPR until the ambulance got there. She survived but is on medication for the rest of her life. I told her to move closer to me and she did. Knowing each other for 42 years we are like sisters. She lives in the same apartment complex as me so it's nice to be able to just pop over and have a coffee etc.

Regarding the Birth of Baby Boy..I've done that, and she's right it's amazing!! 💖 💖 Only I delivered a set of twins on a ferry in the middle of Lake Ontario heading to the Trauma Hospital in Labor and Delivery Ward. Both boys were absolutely beautiful and fine, and each weighed in just over 6 pounds each. Delivered my neighbors daughter in the back seat of their car, and just about had to deliver one in an elevator going to Labor and Delivery while I was a patient at the hospital for Pancreatitis. Life as a Paramedic was never dull. You never knew what each shift would bring, but those are just a couple of "HAPPY" memories of my time. I'm now recently retired, and while I miss the adrenaline that you would get with each call, my body said it was time for me to stop after 35 years of service. Best Regards and Stay Safe Everyone!! From a Former Paramedic in Ontario, Canada, Jenn. 💖 💖 🇨🇦

This was really hard for me to watch. In 2015 I went into cardiac arrest. I left work and went to emergency feeling really weak like I was going to pass out. Somehow amazingly they got me back. The small town hospital called my husband to come to the hospital; they told him I was in an ambulance going to the city and to get family asap, their words to my husband was the situation was not good . The pulse they got back was only 28 and I wasn't breathing. The trauma unit Drs. said I shouldn't have survived. I will never forget waking up on life support wondering what the hell happened. I was one of the lucky one's that day. I am so glad Terrence survived.

Delivering a baby at home or in the ambulance on way to hospital is both exhilarating and terrifying as a paramedic. I’ve delivered 5 & helped stall delivery of 4 more until we got them to the hospital to resolve a complication such as breech or cord around the neck. However the funniest was we wheeled her screaming into the ER & a student dr went to check how far along she was (I told them baby was coming NOW) and the lady pushed one last time at that moment...and the baby slid out right into the hands of this very young, male student! He looked utterly shocked & dumbfounded. Nurses had to take the baby & move the student dr out of the way. 😂 Turned out that was the first birth he had ever seen & it kinda all happened at once right into his hands. To be fair...he did catch & cradle the baby in his hands...then he froze. He is a brilliant OBGYN now who has delivered hundreds of babies. I think I witnessed the moment he chose that as his specialty. But I’ll never forget the look on his face. 😂 Shock, awe, fear...all at once.

For any Americans in the comments, please keep in mind that the ambulances are paid for by the NHS, NOT the patients/their insurance. We can have thousands upon thousands of ambulances here in the US, but if people can't afford them then what's the point? It's a very different system than it is here in the states, with its own pros and cons.

I'm in America and when I receive a bill for an ambulance ride it goes in the trash. My mom in her final days got an ambulance ride from the hospital to her assisted living and they wanted $1800 for a 7 mile drive. Bills like that? Shoot, I don't stress about it because no sane person would pay that. People wouldn't pay $300 for a loaf of bread so why would they stress over a ridiculous hospital bill?

I busted out crying when the baby finally came out! Yipee! Everybody did their best to do a good job! I cried for the mum, the baby and the paramedic who helped deliver (and SHE had her own baby with birth defects from lack of oxygen!) I'm watching her being so calm and I'm crying for them all! THIS was a delivery to remember! AND i see in the prolog, that the ambulance service treated 2861 patients in two 12-hour shifts! MY LORD! YOU ARE hard workers and very much appreciated! I like how your service operates in the U.K. Over here in the U.S. you pay separate for each ambulance: it runs between $450 and up in price. Services of any kind run very high too in the ER. (When i saw the mum and daughter get a ride to the hospital, i said to myself "Well, that'll cost you $450!" Little did i know it was already covered by NHS). Good show!

My son was born on my bathroom floor because my labour was so, so fast. I thought I'd have little bath before going to the hospital and didn't realize just how much it would dull the pain. I got out of the tub after 20 minutes and he was coming. I should have known better. My first baby was an easy 4 hours from first twinge to finish so I should have figured he'd be in a hurry. At first i thought the first man, Terry, had just gone into cardiac arrest when the lady called emergency services but 26 minutes? Holy shit! Good work on the EMS people for getting a pulse back. The chances of that are so low.

The brunette controller with the black glasses and a bun, I’m sorry that I don’t recall her name, is an absolute boss. She seems like she absolutely knows what going on at all times, as well as thinking three steps ahead! The situation with Morris crushed me. Did I understand that he’d only recently lost his parents? Poor guy. When the baby was born at the end and was crying immediately, I bawled! After such a sad loss with the loss of their last child at birth.

Getting a ROSC in the field is extremely rare. ROSC stands for Return Of Spontaneous Circulation. Usually the ones I saw was when they were already admitted to the hospital. I’ve seen so many cardiac arrests but very rarely have I seen a ROSC

These guys are great. Pure human beings. And it looks like they're well funded. It's the same here in Toronto Canada. Not sure about the rest of the country though. Here in TO, our EMS service is great. Unfortunately, there isn't enough of them for this massive and dense city. They even have EMTs that specialize in mental health calls. Been saved 5 times from suicide. They were so kind and understanding. They knew where I lived, knew my parents, and one of the three officers was always the same. This was years ago. Now a days, I'm much better. In a relationship 7 years strong. Great relationship with my parents. And I'm a business owner of three years. The EMS services world wide need the funding they ask for. Nothing less is acceptable. So many lives will be lost they don't.

as a retired paramedic the differences are huge. I was shocked when he was not intubated, one of the very first things I would have to do is secure the airway as my basic EMT's and FD would do compressions. even if we had a Spontaneous Return of Circulation I could always sedate them if they fought the tube.

@@gryphon8023 they experimented with LUCAS for a bit and some criticsl care trucks had them..typically we will grab a FD member for compressions. i can't tell you how many times I laid on my belly tubing the unresponsive pulselesss patient

But if you think about it doing compressions is still circulating oxygenated blood through the system. No, it isn’t ideal by any means because eventually it’s not oxygenated but the priority is ROSC… I’ve been a paramedic for 17 years and a Navy corpsman for 25 before that and now looking back I would have given my left arm for a Lucas or Autopulse… we still don’t use them here😮

This happened on mothers day , may of 2020. My dad died of cardiac arrest at 5am . Due to he was an alcoholic and had depression so he was taking drugs to. He overdosed on drugs and alcohol. That made him have a heart attack. We have been missing him since. Just watching this triggers my sadness. Of that day. ❤❤💔💔😭😭😭

I just want to say thank you, I'm in uS and I like your content. I'm disabled. The health care there what they can do puts us to shame. I've had many hours in hospitals, ambulances, not knocking mine there, the guys that I see all to much is great. But hospitals here don't have the gases and other alternative to pain care now. You suffer a lot because of hard regulations here getting worse. We could be if it from it a great deal.

As the emergency worker said, CPR and electrical shock do not have the outcomes seen on television, so patients and their families have unrealistic expectations. According to one recent study, when CPR is used "the real rate of survival is about 12% for cardiac arrests that occur outside hospitals and between 24% and 40% for those that happen in the hospital." Moreover, CPR can produce significant trauma to the patient, including broken bones. It is not a pointless exercise; it does save lives, but neither should it be expected to likely result in the survival of the patient.

The 88-year old man who drove himself into the pond probably took an overdose as well.. they didn’t hear anything when listening to his lung so there shouldn’t have been water, he had some sort of fit which they can’t explain and he said he did it on purpose. So sad for that man, I hope he rests in peace.
