Here's a peeve of mine....I recently became unemployed (not my fault, the store I worked at closed), and I've had so many people tell me I should teach flute because I can play flute. Just because somebody can do something doesn't mean they are meant to be teachers. Grrr! :)

I would like to be a flute teacher some day, but I'm super bad at explaining things, especially when it comes to music and flute things. I've never had an actual flute lesson myself, so I mostly go by what feels and sounds right while playing, which has actually gotten me very far, surprisingly. But now I've been asked by my band director to give some lessons to a beginner flute that just joined in the eighth grade band (I'm a junior in high school and section leader of all the flutes), and that might spell for some trouble, considering-as mentioned before-I go mostly by feeling and I am awful at explaining things. I'll probably just watch your videos of you teaching your mom how to play the flute, for some pointers :P

This is very interesting to me, I live in Canada in the Toronto-Ottawa area and a lot of the teachers here for violin (I play violin) try to see there students more than once a week. There is one Russian teacher in my area that makes his students see him twice a week, then following a group ensemble lesson led by the same instructor. However most teachers in my area do see their students twice a week, one private lesson followed by a violin ensemble class, both ranging from 1h-1h30/lesson. Contrary to that I actually see my violin teacher 3 times/week because he also coaches our string sectionals in my youth orchestra (3h practice).

In the next video can you talk about advice on how to find competitions in "said" area, I have a lot of trouble getting the news for flute competitions that are of my level (high school lvl), and would love having to get more experience for classic flute music. Other than that I love your videos, please never stop making them I find them extremely informative and entertaining.

I love your videos. My 8 year old is about to begin flute at school. I have shown her a few of your videos. She thinks you are very funny. I love how she giggled (big giggles) at one video where you breath like Darth Vader. If she sticks with the flute, I would love to get more lessons from you once she's old enough. Until then, keep the videos coming. I have learned a lot to just help her with basics like putting the flute together (Flute 101). Your lessons with mom I thought were great too. 😊

Also, any tips for non-musical mom's to help their kids? I am a math homework pro... I wont know if she is playing/practicing the flute wrong. I am so excited she is taking up the flute, but feel crummy that this is one area where I have no clue.

I love your videos so much! They always make me smile!Could you please do a video (or reply on this comment)on tips when your just starting your first 'proper' band that have like 1st flute, 2nd flute and so on.As I have just started this type of band last week, and i noticed that I'm struggling a bit (I'm playing 2nd Flute) with keeping the rhythm accurate ( like playing dotted crotchets for long enough ) as the flutes around me are playing different melodies. Thank You ;) P.S. Hope this comments make sense.

Hi Joanna, I play flute in my school band and I was wondering if you could maybe make a video on how to deal with being in the band and trying to do well in other classes at the same time because it can be difficult to practice and be good at an instrument and keep your grades up too. I love your videos BTW

I'm section leader in my band and counting me there are 4 flutes and all 3 of them have something to learn , one of them always plays as if they're in a big hurry, then another one has an embachure problem and the other has a fingering and embachure problem. I've worked on one and his tone has gotten much better he is like a different flutist than he was in band camp.

The anixety part is some real stuff. Every time I play for my band director I always play quiet and he tells me to play louder and more confidently. (I am a decent musican and by that I mean I am not terrible but I am not the best.) I think of my band directors and lesson teachers as professionals and I think of myself as a beginner. I try to never think of myself as better than anyone even if I am, talent wise. Anixety is always the worst when we have chair tests. I am afraid of accidentally playing better than an upperclassmen or a person that is always in a higher chair because I will feel bad if they get lower chair because of me, an amateur musican. I know it is okay for me not to feel bad but that's my personality. Also, I have lost higher chairs in my early years of band because of me not playing with confidence.

Hey Joanna!!! Can you do a video about lipstick on flutes??? My friend was wearing this "stay on" lip sh*t. And we tried washing it off of her head joint but nothing happened. Do you have any stories about this stuff? Thanks!
@NoodleyBits
@NoodleyBits 8 жыл бұрын
In her "Teaching my mother to play flute" videos, she makes her mother take her lipstick off before playing. Best way to keep lipstick off your flute is to not wear it...but then again there are people like me who wear lipstick and get it on the lip plate *hangs head in shame*. For me though, it usually rubs off with my polishing cloth (I'm like Joanna and have acidic skin so I give my flute a complete cleaning and wipe down before I put it away), and I wear the 24 hour stuff from CoverGirl or Maybelline. One thing I do though is to put the lipstick on an hour or more before rehearsal or concert then it doesn't rub off so much. I also frequently wipe my lip plate during practice or performance (during rests or between songs) on my pants leg (we wear black so it doesn't show lol).

Hey Joanna,I am a sophomore in high school and I play violin. I was exposed to music at a very late time, as I started playing the violin in 9th grade. I quickly became inseparable with the violin and I practice 3-4 hours a day, something I still do. I have reached a respectable level (Mozart Violin Concerto No.3) but I am definitely not at a college level of playing. In the current days, I feel useless, deppressed and incompetent when looking at other passionate musicians. I'm in the highest orchestra in my school, and second highest in my youth orchestra, but even still I feel like crap whenever I think about my abilities as a violinist. As a professional musician, what do you think I should do? Should I consider taking an extra break year to further myself or perhaps should I possibly consider forgetting about music in a professional manner itself? I love your videos and I hope to see you're response.Achuth (It's okay if you don't know how to pronounce my name lol)

Hi Joanna, I'm taking private lessons at university while doing a post-bacc degree. The flute teacher I have here is very persistent...to the tune of "you MUST get a new flute, get someone who will let you borrow a credit card to take flutes on trial" every week. And to every student she comes across. I think it's because she's a flute teacher at a rich private school so money is never an issue to her until she gets to her college students. A new flute would be great but, obviously, I'm totally broke. How do you deal with teachers like her? No matter what, she can't seem to take no for an answer. Wish I could switch teachers, but I can't.

why do I find it nerve-racking to play in front of adults especially to my teachers but I can play just fine in a band setting and when I'm alone, how do I get past this because this is not a good thing to have to achieve my goals of going to be a music educator/performer. Also nice poros on the back btw
@NoodleyBits
@NoodleyBits 8 жыл бұрын
I'm the same way. The more you play "solo" (in a non-band setting) the easier it will get. I'm a person who hates recognition with a passion...I mean really hate it...so I don't like doing solos for that reason. Even with my band. Most of the time I'm the only flutist so I get solos by default, and when I do have a second, she doesn't want them either. It's bad enough flutes are in the front row but to have the director point me out as a solo (which was only a solo because I'm the only flutist) just makes me want to hide behind a tuba.

Joanna, I need your help. Last night I had an accident while cutting vegetables last night that sent me to the ER. I'll be fine in the long run, but my hand is bandaged up. I cut into my left ring finger. :( This means I cannot play clarinet for pep band. I know how to play flute, and I am going to for likely the rest of pep band season. I am friends with the 3 flutists, but they can diva-ish about who plays in the flute section. How do I deal with them in a friendly manner that the might not be angry at me but work together in the flute section.

Wouldn't time management be really hard as a flutist? You have rehearsals, performances, lessons, you tube videos etc. Is there anything you do that helps you stay organized as a musician?

Hey Joanna, I don't know if this happens to you but sometimes when I would play for a teacher( especially if it's someone that I admire as a musician), I would get really anxious and start freaking out. What do you do when that happens?
@kucekto
@kucekto 8 жыл бұрын
Focus on your music. That's what I do when I get anxious. Sometime I start getting anxious when I have made a mistake, and I will feel the music and sink into it. And even if I got mistakes because I am anxious, the music still goes on without being interrupted.
