Yeah, I had picked blue as my guess to win at the start and up until then I was like "at this point green as the best chance but blue might pull through". But when the orange ball separated I was like "nononono, back! Back! Shit, it is a killer on a mission, it's goal? the heart of blue!".

I think it is actually a detriment - Killing a team means that you expand into their territory, making it larger and you less able to defend, since collisions with the wall are less frequent. This would be fine if your 'core' remained in the centre, which it doesn't. For the other team next to you, they still have the same distance to your core, but now there is less defence, making it easier for them to kill you. This is why as soon as [4th] died, I knew [1st] was going to win: even though all three had about a third of the map, [1st]'s core was much more centred than the other two. It would be interesting to have the core slowly move towards the centre of your territory (e.g. take a step every 10 seconds) so that you don't get punished for killing early or for your neighbour dying.

To add to that, having more territory is a bad thing. As the more territory you have the more space there is to move around, and the area is less dense, and the amount of territory converted to that team goes down. That's why that orange ball at 12:27 did so much damage to both blue and orange. It had less space, to move around, and could go places quickly, while the orange territory was less dense. This killed both orange and blue.

I feel like the 4 "corner" sides (purple, cyan yellow, red) were kinda destined to lose. Something about the way the angled wall on the outer edge seemed to keep those 4 colours from defending their core as effectively as the other 4 colours. Yes, Red managed to kill Magenta and enter the top 4, but I'd argue that was only possible because Magenta took enough of Purples old zone to screw up their own defence. So yeah, pretty sure this set-up isn't fair to those 4 spots. So, I think it might be a good idea to check future stages for this sort of angular dissymetry.

Nah. Lime had everything going for it. Beginning was rough but most of its neighbors were eliminated and lime also pressured blue the entire time. Not quite unexpected, but orange splitting off the ball was amazing

As soon as red died I knew lime would win. The thing about this type of set up is when your neighbouring colour is eliminated your center shifts away from the home square, leaving you open for attack. Orange and blues centers shifted to the right and left their home squares exposed to lime

Wasn't a surprise to me, if the marbles move on the same velocity, larger territory means longer travel distance for the marbles, which leads to slower "attacks" hence having smaller territory size helps with "attacking" more frequently Just look at that one single orange marble single handedly pushing through, and soon killing blue, which leads the "battlefield" to be split left and right in halves, which ends up their "base" being in the middle of the line, granting lime an easy kill It's all physics

With some thoughts like that I was able to predict around 6:30 that lime would win and even that pink and yellow were about to die and that red would soon follow. Lucky guess however, since I thought the Blue v Orange v Lime battle would be an easier win.

That logic doesn’t influence who wins, because “attacking” grows your territory, which simultaneously reduces your ability to attack, and this principle applies to every territory equally. In reality, this is a good example of chaos theory. Changing the starting position of lime’s marbles by a pixel will make its territory unrecognizable after just a short period of time, and so while we might be able to get some kind of intuition for the likelihood of a color winning, it will only ever be a guess until the simulation is calculated out to completion

@@graystone2802 the position of the base relative to your territory matters a lot. Green at this point had it pretty central like blue and orange. Yellow is next to die, then red and purple because they have their bases too close for comfort to their edges. Then this extra space for blue and orange means taking a cube costs more time for orange and blue, so it's easier for green to take some, while it's base is dead center and the other two are stretched thin

@@zimzimph the colors that began in the corners were the first to die, for sure. There is something about being in the corner that is a distinct disadvantage, and maybe the base location has something to do with it. Personally, I think it has to do with the fact that the grid is made of squares. Sometimes the balls collide with a square and change more than just 1 to their color if they hit both. This happens a lot more frequently when you’re hitting the squares on their flat faces. The colors in the corners of the map are much more likely to hit squares on their corners, meaning they inherently cannot grow as quickly as the colors with territories that are in a cardinal direction

This setup is flawed, as it makes a difference if you start on a 90 or 45 degree. As you could see all 45 degree starts were eliminated first and the others second. It's an issue due to the fact they do not start symmetrically / the squares.

In these games it’s almost always a safe bet to pick the color furthest from the first death. Because every death allows neighbors to expand, and asymmetrically so, which both decreases the pressure inside their bubble and moves the marbles away from their base on average. So every death puts the neighbors in danger, in a chain reaction that just leaves the farthest one (in theory)
