This may have overtaken Sullivan’s Travels for my favorite Sturges. The first imagined sequence during the concert is absolutely hilarious.

Sturges wrote to Newman: ''I'm just overwhelmed by what you did for me!'' (See Criterion commentary.) Rex, who was left handed and had to memorise the strokes and the music, worked for hours on it - and was under another impression: Damned Serious Business, page 94: ''The problem with this was that I had to learn how to conduct an orchestra, and though I am reasonably musical, I had no idea how to set about such a task. Fortunately I had a marvellous young English conductor, Robin Sanders-Clark, as my coach (note: he seems to have been an actor and really is in the credits as to have coached him), and he must have done wonders with me, for, at the end of filming, the orchestra revealed that, though rightly sceptical about my musicianship to begin with, they had actually followed my beat as the film went on, as if I were their real conductor! I was immensely touched, especially when they ganged up and wrote a 'Harrison Fanfare' for me, to commemorate their 'amazement and delight' in what they called my 'histrionic feat'.'' Fanfare works as a gag too: fanfaron, braggart, swaggerer - which, among others, mean: showy, arrogant individual who confidently thinks is very important - with 'histrionic' meaning excessively theatrical and melodramatic, as in: concerning acting. So, it may have been either an honest tribute - or a joke from the pit, tooting his own horn, but from his perspective, a touching kudos to an actor. Who knows! ...

Sir Alfred's laugh at 4:09 slays me - it's so wonderfully manic, hysterical, and delirious with self-satisfaction and pleasure! 😂👌🏼

Actually, the music was conducted by Alfred Newman! What a man!

Weird seeing a cigarette just smoking away all by itself. Odd for it to be sitting by musicians. Oh, wait; string players don't need to take deep breaths like the brass players or singers! :-) ...and then he walks away and leaves it.... Love Rossini's music.
