In the Okapi Wildlife Reserve in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme is using an innovative approach to compare animal densities in hunted and non-hunted areas. Find out how the 60 camera traps set up by the SWM Programme can reveal if animal populations are stable or declining and whether hunting management needs to be improved.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the SWM Programme is being coordinated by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). The SWM Programme is an Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States initiative, funded by the European Union with co-funding from the French Facility for Global Environment and the French Development Agency. It is active in fifteen countries and is being implemented by a consortium of partners, which includes FAO, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) and WCS.
