The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, designed by César Pelli, blend Islamic motifs with a postmodern style. The tube-in-tube structure, influenced by Fazlur Rahman Khan's design, is mainly reinforced concrete with a steel and glass façade. Construction started in 1993, involving rigorous testing due to the site's geological challenges. Completed in 1999, they stand on the world's deepest foundations and were built within six years by Japanese and South Korean consortia. The use of high-strength concrete reduced reliance on steel but made the towers heavier. The towers boast a sophisticated structural system, offering vast column-free office space beneath which lies Suria KLCC, a prominent shopping mall, and the Petronas Philharmonic Hall.
