Dal Lake, called the "jewel in the crown of Kashmir" or the "Venice of the East" is home to the fascinating Floating Market. Just like its Italian counterpart, Dal Lake has a network of interconnected waterways, vibrant floating markets, and a tradition of living on houseboats.
The floating market is a key part of Kashmiri culture, offering a unique and vibrant shopping experience right on the water. It features vendors selling colorful flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, and beautiful handicrafts from traditional wooden boats called shikaras. This market starts at 4:00 am in morning, so you need to leave your houseboat or hotel early too. It's best to be there by 5 a.m. Its something one should not miss!! If you're staying in a houseboat, make sure to arrange a shikara and agree on the price the evening before, as it won't be possible to find any shikaras at that hour.
One of the remarkable features of Dal Lake is its one-of-a-kind boat ambulance service, created by Tariq Ahmed Patloo. Serving about 9,000 residents this boat ambulance has all basic facilities, including an oxygen system. Previously, residents had to navigate their own boats to the main road for healthcare. Now, they can call the boat ambulance anytime to be ferried to the boulevard.
Another unique features of Dal Lake is its floating islands, known as "Rad" or "Radav", created by weaving together layers of floating vegetation.
Lastly, the kehwa made by @mushtaqkewha was the best I had in Kashmir. Made with numerous ingredients and topped with rose petals, it was exactly what we needed on the chilly morning.
