The comment section on Watcher's announcement was majestic. It turns out you either die an independent youtube channel or live long enough to see yourself become Buzzfeed again.

This could have been avoided had they decided not be greedy. It might have been slightly understandable if they are a smaller channel they need funds. But a big channel like them? What did they expect? To be like "It is ok we understand!" ? Doesn't work that way pal.

So glad you agree with not forgiving them. Yes, they're apology seemed pretty good and genuine; HOWEVER, they have already proven that they will put profit above consideration for their fans. Even if they end up correcting future mistakes, it's clear that they're primary focus ia greed and the only reason they walked back on this was bc it affected their bottom line. They aren't sad that they upset their fans, they're sad that they almost lost a bunch of money

The corpo mindset of "infinite business growth." Really fucks up allot of business. You have to plan things logically instead of "my business is growing big, let's tackle a lot of big projects all at once. We can't fail." Then the quality goes down, moral goes down, then the business goes down. Or they sell it to some other big company and ride to the sunset.
@TJackson7369 ай бұрын
This is publicly traded company thinking. Privately traded companies must think differently. Being okay with just making what you make or a slow growth is what these businesses are about. Privately owned companies do not have the investors to grow rapidly and thus do not. People should learn the different kind of businesses and orfanizations and what their general plans are. Publicly teaded companies will want to make a lot more money in the future. If any publicly traded company has a free tier that actually costs them something, that will go away when they think they have grown enough to survive the move from free to paid only. Privately owned companies will likely not grow a lot but also are more stable. It might end when the founder leaves or dies and his children dont want to inherit the company. This is what happened with my family business when my dad refused to work his way up to owning a multi-million dollar nationwide company. My grandfather sold off the business.

It’s exactly how Matt Reiff threw away his entire fandom to be part of the boys club. They threw away their entire fandom because they wanted to be an actual TV show when they are enough already. All I watch is KZbin I don’t watch TV. So I’m definitely hurt, but if they make good stuff, I’ll probably watch it 😂😂😂
@FukaiKokoro9 ай бұрын
What's stupid is they think KZbin is restrictive? Imagine how shocked they'll be when they find out how restricted they'll feel with Tv corporations like fox, cbs, Hulu, Netflix etc. it makes zero sense at all. KZbin compared is the least restrictive. plus they are very sponsor friendly. So I personally think that's just a lie.
@BigAlexgator9 ай бұрын
@@FukaiKokoro right it’s like they were making shit excuses when really they just wanted to feel big time and have someone sponsor them to fly them all over the world it sounded like.
@conqueenfador50379 ай бұрын
@@FukaiKokoro to be fair, if what they want specifically is money then in terms of sponsorships they might get higher amounts of it then compared to KZbin sponsorships. that's cause sponsors love to know what they are getting into and who sponsors them exactly cause of the extra rules and the more restrictive the show is, the more money they will give to them cause they know what to expect which I know sounds kinda dumb but that's how the sponsorships side works mostly. the more rules you have and the more restrictive your specific demographic (the ones that are willing to give money specifically) is the more money they are okay with giving. but as of now it feels very stupid at least for me cause their fanbase isn't mainly composed of ones that are willing to pay so changing fanbase will hurt them a lot in long term I don't know but as of now it seems they might be losing money before they make it big.

They LITERALLY could have EXTREMELY FANCY lives right NOW if they just moved out of fucking LA!!! THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO!!! (Edit:) So I just did the math... This "Company" makes 3 Million... I like Watcher. I've been a fan since what feels like forever. But this was just not the way to go about things for them. They release merch, have live shows where you pay to see them live, they have patreon, I'm sure they have yt members and donations, not to speak of ads and sponsorships they get, this is simply not the solution. They need an accountant, or someone to manage their finances. It's not about not having enough money, it's about how they spend that money. Unless they severely undersell themselves when they get sponsorships, their finances should not be this bad. That being said, I don't think this will be the end for them. And I don't want it for them either. I just wish they listened to their fanbase more, and we'll only see if they will as time goes on

I want to know how much money they thought this would make. During the announcement they talked about how this would allow them to hire more tallent, but during the apology they said they needed the money or they would need to fire people. Or did they really think that a large portion of their subscribers would move, like seems reasonable 10% they average 1 mil views so that would be 600k, how in the red are they, that that would stop them firing people

Almost all apologies fall under "I'm sorry you feel that way", or "I'm sorry I got caught". If you know what you're doing is greedy or harmful, then apologizing for it means nothing. Because you're already choosing yourself in a situation where you don't need to, and forcing other people to make changes in their lives accordingly. These guys weren't sorry for what they did. They knew they were paywalling content that had been free before, but they still chose to do it mocing forward. The only thing they're sorry about is how harsh the response was. The only times I believe apologies are genuine is when they come from people who have suffered from extreme enough repercussions from their actions that their view point has drastically shifted, or people that are apologizing because their actions had unforseen consequences and they're apologizing for those. Neither of those descriptions fit these guys IMO, so I don't believe for a single second that their apology is come from a place of sincerity.

As a bit of context to the part about the 1+M views, the 3 series that get the most views on Watcher are Mystery Files, Ghost Files, and Puppet History. The videos from 9+ weeks ago were from Top10 beatdown and Too Many Spirits, which are significantly less popular. Also, they have a successful web store, so the streaming service pivot they initially wanted was definitely a money grab. I don't doubt that they will still make great content, but this controversy will sour viewership for the next few months at least

I would say that I don't think it's coming from greed, but being extremely out of touch and very stupid. When I watched it, I interpreted Watcher as wanting to move away from having sponsored episodes. They stated they felt like they were serving two masters when making content, the fans and then the sponsors, and they wanted to make content they wanted and what the fans would want. If that is the case, that's respectable, but their mess up was that they think of themselves a bigger than indie youtube content creators, more akin to rivaling buzzfeed in their minds. I love Watcher, (and yes, I acknowledge this may be making me biased in how I am taking this), but I didn't even know they had a patreon until this video came out, so why not take the things they were offering in the streamer service, voting on content to be brought back, that specialized streamer website, ect, and roll that into their patreon and actually advertise it more? I think it's because they thought that would be like Buzzfeed asking people to subscribe to a patreon; like it was a slap in the face of the people who watch the shows. They thought they were big corpo instead of what they were, a successful indie content creation studio that wanted to stay independent. Regardless of the intent or reason though, this was an enormous screw up that's wrecked their reputation and trust with their fans, myself included, and they have a long hard road to earn that trust back

The reasoning for them wanting their own streaming service is definitely unreasonable because of the income the company sees but if what they say is at all true they just didn’t want ad breaks in their videos disrupting the content they’re trying to produce, I get why they wanted it, but it they didn’t take the audience they appeal to into account

It's crazy that they thought their audience was big enough to make this work. So many people didn't even know the Buzzfeed guys had made their own channel and this is the first they are hearing about it. KZbin ad revenue is gonna dwarf the amount of money they make from paid subs which makes this even more confusing. I really don't buy that they were financially struggling as well. Especially when you look into their company they have been actively expanding. Linus is basically the only channel that makes enough content on youtube to justify something like this.
