Review of Clint Eastwood's 1992 masterpiece 'Unoforgiven' on 4K UHD home video disc. I saw this in 1992 at the Odeon Mezzanine in Leicester Square which is not the best place to see a film but was the only option by the time I had time to see it. The 35mm print that evening was a beauty and this 4K takes me back to that great night. I have had UNFORGIVEN on Blu-ray for many years but something was lacking in that release and I had never enjoyed this film so much as I did at the cinema in 1992. That has all now changed as the film on 4K is a revelation and transports you back to 1992 and that memorable cinema screening.
Image aspect ratio is 2.40:1 approximately and sound is now DTS-HD 5.1.

Unforgiven is in my Top Ten of All Time. It's one of only a handful of films that I remember remaining in my seat afterwards. Not because I wanted to read the credits, but because I needed to let the film resonate. I think it's Clint Eastwood's crowning achievement.

I worked at a multiplex in Solihull when this was out, it was one of those films where I never complained if punters stayed to the end because of the Lennie Niehaus soundtrack and those final guitar notes. Outstanding and deserved all the accolades it received. Keep up the good work providing content, please!

There is nothing that could be improved with this film now... other than a 50 foot wide screen I suppose. Good luck with your Canadian sojourn in June. It's funny, Unforgiven was one of the very first 4ks that I bought 4 years ago when I started. And I still havent gotten around to giving it a go, it was a blind buy, I have still not actually seen the film at all. 😂 After this I may get it out and finally give it a go, I had bought it when I was in a big Westerns mood and I havent really been all that interested in Western since or for a while so maybe I should get it on and see if I can't bring that back a little bit. Also funny is that I bought the Super 8 4k because of that video that got removed. I did end up getting that Creepshow blu-ray set by the way. I rewatched the first two Creepshow films which I thought were ok, it's the format really that is the king. It's an idea and a film that is greater than the sum of its parts. Like the individual stories are good and fun but not like incredible but because you get a nice selection of them it actually works out quite well. The second film is still my favourite over the first film. I also decided finally to brave the much maligned and dreaded Creepshow 3 and found it to quite simply be one of the worst films ever made, it quite comfortably sits in my bottom 20 films I have ever watched, so avoid or keep avoiding that one, it isnt worth one second. But I started the series after this and what a great selection of horror and genre actors and some cool and fun little stores. The first episode with Tobin Bell is a highlight for me as I am a huge Saw franchise fan, so seeing him was awesome. Easily my favourite episode though was the Season 2 premiere episode, that one is actually truly great and the first part is one of my favourites and best horror shorts or segments that I have ever seen. I have actually watched that episode 3 times, as I have shown that episode to a few friends and people. I have had to stop just before that final episode of Season 2 as I need to track down and watch Horror Express before I continue on and watch that episode and then continue the series. But yh, thanks for those recommendations and I am thoroughly enjoying the Creepshow Series.
@moviecollector5920

I think you'll find that you don't have to be in a Western mood to thoroughly enjoy Unforgiven TJ. You'll either love it or you won't irrespective of the genre. As for the Creepshow series, absolutely bloody brilliant. I think they must have had to have slimmed the budget a little for the fourth series but there are still some very good and some fun episodes in there along with possibly a few more ordinary stories. It's a good day for Unforgiven today though as it is a sort of resurrection story as the old gunslinger goes back to his old ways. John.

A masterpiece. Simple. The last 15 min of this film are arguably the best last 15 min of any film ever made. William Munny, out of Missouri. It’s funny, heartwarming, sad, menacing and calm. One of the best films ever made. I’m not into westerns, but I could watch this repeatedly. “I've killed women and children. I've killed everything that walks or crawls at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you done to Ned…” And the transfer is wonderful.

Hi John! Happy Easter ! Add me to the long list I really hold this one up in high regard as well. It looks great on my tele as well in 4k and I remember seeing it a few times in the cinema as well. The film is like a beautiful tree with so many branches and leaves lolololol subscribers pointing these out has me ready for another viewing... I'll add a branch for the young man learning about taking life. And the beautiful Alberta scenery and the cinematography (inside to outside shots and visa versa) just a masterpiece... thanks again John for a great review.. and just a note on OUTIH.. it's another example like you point out in your Get Carter review of taking you into an era and planting you there giving us that time travel/location travel experience... it was a funny film but creepy as well walking around the neighborhood where you know some terrible happenings are going to take place and to a real/young and beautiful actress... I think Wyatt Earp is one of the best Westerns ever made Jonny. Open Range is another. I like Tombstone but it's not exactly of the accurate wild west variety of the others including Unforgiven. The best thing for a screen is a painted white wall with brilliant white matt emulsion. Frame it with black velvet and if possible work out a way to alter that framing/masking so that it can envelop the projected image. If the screen ever looks a bit tired you then just re-paint it. Projection is cinema so you're doing the right thing. Television is too restrictive as you're totally governed by the size of the box but a video projector gives you options. I need to get up to the BFI IMAX to see that DUNE TWO blow-up print. Other things have got in the way over the past few weeks. John.

Lovely video, John and Happy Easter to you and the Mrs. Usually your videos cost me money, but as I decided to invest in a new 4K 77” OLED and the Magnetar 900 player I stick to my recently purchased blu rays of both Pale Rider and this The Unforgiven. I missed out on both back in the 80’s in the cinema but might watch them this Easter weekend and see how the Magnerar upscales them. With my renewed interest in Clint’s Westerns after watching the No Name trilogy from 4K Kult on 4K I am sure I’ll have a blast. One Night in Soho I bought on your recommendation here but it’s on the same “still to watch pile” as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I doubt it will blow me away both story and quality wise as Inglorious Basterds did. Let’s hope the amazing Hateful Eight will be on 4K soon. Meanwhile I did pre order Once Upon A Time In The West on 4K and that controversial AlienS 4K coming late April. I can’t wait to judge this a.i. transfer myself and ofcourse hear your expert opinion on that one. Have a great weekend. What will you watch coming days?

Evening Pieter. I actually went off Unforgiven a little due to the Blu-ray not really doing the film full justice so you may find the same. I enjoyed it of course but it wasn't the same impact as the 35mm print I saw back in 1992. This 4K is though. I think a general release print was used for the Blu-ray and the 4K has gone back to the negative and that makes quite a difference. I don't know what we'll be watching in the coming days. I'm a little preoccupied with other things at the moment and that's taken my mind off films and videos. I'll get back on the horse soon though. Until then, have a happy Easter. John.

I don't think it's likely I'll get The Abyss Theo as it's not been released here. It should look good though because it does on Super 8. Enough people have said it's good. However, many don't like the perhaps excessive processing done during the mastering of TRUE LIES. James Cameron didn't shoot full frame anamorphic 35mm owing to computer effects which forced him down the Super 35 route. This was a major cause of the downturn in image quality towards the latter 1990's. I suspect he's being overly cautious about his films now being seen in such exceptional quality on tiny home screens and therefore wants to disguise anything he considers to be sub-standard. If it's true that some of the scenes in True Lies now have smeary looking areas then I'd hazard a guess that some of his caution has led to excessive image noise reduction. However, I would put money on the 4K looking better than any other version of the film that has been released with the possible exception of the recent cut down on Super 8 but that of course will not be the complete film on this occasion. It costs £25 so I suggest giving it a go and seeing what you think or if you have any doubts wait a few months and get it for £15. Considering what we used to pay for home movies the cost of these 4K discs is a bargain. An absolute, infathomable bargain irrespective of some not looking quite how they should. Let's face it, it's the 4K or the DVD or the LaserDisc. I'll probably stick with the LaserDisc but I expect the 4K to look even better. John.

Another great review - thanks John. I think Unforgiven was probably the first western that I truly connected with - reckon I saw it first in the mid/late nineties as a teenager - I speculate that it took my interest because of Gene Hackman, who was familiar to me because of the Superman films in the first instance, and then the Poseidon Adventure. The writing and performances in Unforgiven are so good that I really still empathise with Hackman's character at the end, even though being supportive of Clint's character. Perhaps the first time I picked up on such ambiguity as a film watcher... And so glad to hear that you enjoyed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - it's such an enjoyable slice of life in a specific time and place that don't exist any more - and it's never regretful about that but celebratory - and of course it has the usual incredible soundtrack that we'd expect fromTarantino films. I had a 65" Mitsubishi Rear projection HD TV with an Onkyo receiver and an Infinity 6.1 surround system. It sounded and looked so good. Watching Gladiator on Blu Ray back then it had a 6.1 setting and the seen where the gladiators walk into the arena for the first time and the camera swings around as they are all looking up at the audience the sound was just amazing with the chearing coming out of all 6 speakers. I agree that the 4k looks great. Speaking of Eastwood, one of very first titles I bought when I first started collecting discs less than 3 years ago was Play Misty for Me. I think it was Eastwood's directorial debut. Jessica Walters plays a brilliantly acted psychopath imo; she's also gorgeous every micro second on screen and keeps me transfixed. At the time the blu ray looked pretty good but now it looks like too much colour Saturation. I read somewhere that Eastwood supervised this 4k and he wanted it intentionally darker so those indoor scenes and especially the first 10 minutes or so are extremely dark but look more natural thanks to what the HDR does to the black levels, those scenes on blu ray now look washed out and blacks fall more onto the grey scale. John, 'Unforgiven' is a superb piece of film making, Clint Eastwood did a remarkable job. I think I also remember he was inspired to make this film because of the success of 'Dances with Wolves' bringing an audience back to westerns (or maybe it was the other way around); your enthusiasm for the film comes over clearly in the review... I agree with you totally on the PQ and the subtle audio that just brings the viewer into the story, without calling attention to itself... I also have a slipcover, but it's in a box with plenty of it's colleagues - I display the disc collection on the shelf without slip covers (seems to save enough space for another title, every several titles). Btw, in that box of Blu-rays, did you enjoy 'Flags of the Fathers' and 'Letters from Iwo Jima'? I support your idea of a 'Super 8' redux review. Cheers.

Morning Stephen. Dances With Wolves was two years earlier as I recall and it did resurrect the Western. I'm a big fan of Eastwood's movies. I rewatched Unforgiven not long ago. I think it was free on Prime at the time. I started to understand the movie better this time; how the Wild West wasn't a clear-cut good guy/bad guy moral tale. Gunning down "bad guys" isn't a rewarding feat and it stains a man's soul. It's most evident when this dark musical motif that follows Gene Hackman's character follows Eastwood at the climax of the movie. It was quite haunting to witness the "villains" motif leap from one character to another.

Unforgiven is one of those rare movies that are of a time and yet timeless. Surprising that it was originally meant to be just a violent, bloody western, but Eastwood changed it to be a lot more dramatic about an aged gun slinger, and what resulted was a great western, brutal when needed, but with extremely anti-violent sentiment. I haven’t yet, but I’m desperate to see the Japanese remake that was made several years ago, with Ken Watanabe in the lead, as a retired Samurai in feudal Japan setting. It especially interests me as it’s a rare remake where Hollywood made the original instead of being the remake. Regarding Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, I really enjoyed it, the Mrs did but not as much - it was especially interesting to see Tarantino’s take on the Sharon Tate murder and see his alternate history ‘once upon a time in,,,’ style. I think it’s also one of those movies where if you know the real history events, it influences your watching experience, especially those brutal final 10 minutes or so. I saw it in cinemas and it was almost my favourite movie that year but was beaten by Bad Times At The Royale - which has a fictional yet somewhat parable connection to a lot of elements in OUATIH, and feels like a Tarantino movie despite him having nothing to do with it. I don’t know if you’ve seen it or not, but since you liked OUATIH I thoroughly recommend it to you. Andrew

Picked up the Unforgiven 4k today when I was in Cex, £10 but was from credit from some things i had traded in a little while back, so I decided to go for it. So it’s on the pile with a few new acquisitions, including The Proposition I still haven’t gotten around to yet. Has me hoping for a 4k of another western I loved, Open Range.

@@ahdvd I too think OPEN RANGE is one of the all-time best westerns and may actually be my favourite of the lot. It's not very well known though so I don't suppose it's very likely it will be re-transferred and re-mastered for a 4K release. The 101 Films Blu-ray is very good though if you don't already have it. The sound is Dolby Stereo whereas a previous German Blu-ray has a 5.1 soundtrack but I'm increasingly finding that Dolby Stereo sounds better lately. I need to do some more playing about to get the digital tracks sounding as nice now that I've rediscovered LaserDisc sound and how good it always was. John.

@@moviecollector5920 I think Kevin Costner might own the rights to Open Range which may be why it hasn’t had a high-rez update as being the director he’d probably want to oversee the quality before any such release. As far as I remember reading, he financed the movie himself with his own money and while not a hugely expensive figure, I think it was made for less than $30m considering the town set had to be built and everything involved. And i think being so modestly budgeted, despite not being a huge hit, it’s garnered a cult following and probably turned a profit and the following would likely snap it up on disc.

I need to take another look at Red October as I haven't tried it on the latest video projector. It was far too dark through the older projector but I don't think that will be the case on every system and certainly not on many or most tellies. Unforgiven is a great film but if we all thought the same of every movie then it would be a little strange. John, who would you say as a collector yourself makes the highest quality movie boxsets or editions? Criterion, Arrow or who? I want to buy Alien blu ray, but when I look at all the different editions they all have the same disc? also can't make my mind up on a projector, it's between Optoma, Epson and Benq, do you have a preference? last question I promise, do you use keystone correction on you screen, thank you friend...
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 2 ай бұрын
First thing to say is that I did use a keystone correction when I was projecting from an angle. That reduces the quality of the image though as to straighten the image out means the size has to be reduced, if that makes any sense. Best to project from as near the centre of the screen as possible unless you get a projector with lens shift across the horizontal axis. The best box sets in my opinion are Second Sight Films and Arrow Films. But just about every distributor comes out with a box at some point that rivals the best out there. Second Sight have probably been the most consistent but they are possibly the most expensive too. I haven't had an Epson projector for many years but when I was first looking at 4K projectors I couldn't find a budget Epson that was actually 4K. They all seemed to be HD with HDR capability. Some contributors to the comments on here have purchased 4K BenQ projectors and rate them highly but I've had a couple of Optoma 4K projectors and they've both been amazingly good. Actually, they both are still amazingly good. The reason we had to get a second projector was because the original one was too big to hang from the ceiling where we had to position it. Funnily enough, I'll be showing all that briefly near the start of the next video which will probably be uploaded later on today. John.

A colleague summed up how he felt about Quentin Tarantino films and it was exactly how I also felt. He said, "I like his as a film maker, I just don't like his movies." I came very close to walking out of Pulp Fiction with the male rape scene and it was years before I tried another Tarantino film (The Hateful Eight) which also disgusted me in one or two scenes. I finally managed to give Pulp Fiction a second try because I did enjoy the dance sequence near the start and I very much enjoyed it second time around. I was prepared for that notorious shocking scene so it didn't bother me hardly at all. I think 'Hollywood' is only the third of his films that I've seen and that is because of the effect the other two had on me. I can't quite believe how good I find Once Upon A Time In Hollywood but I haven't finished getting all the way through it a second time yet as there's been a bit of an emergency I've had to take care of that I can't talk about on an open platform. Ah, that's the transfer though and not the mastering. I know just about every KZbin reviewer confuses the two as being the same thing. I bet the unaltered cine to video transfers of James Cameron's films looked a little too grainy after the scans and he therefore wanted to do the best that was possible with them for the majority of people likely to purchase his films on 4K and possibly Blu-ray too. Most want a modern, grain free image and that's probably what most of us real enthusiasts don't want to see. As long as they sell in big numbers it's good news for all of us irrespective of what any of us might think. I don't need any of those 4K discs as I have two of the films on Super 8 and not so bothered about True Lies which I still very much enjoy on the fabulous PAL LaserDisc. @@moviecollector5920 Honestly I think you might be on to something with "Was True Lies the last good film James Cameron made?" Obviously it's a divisive question and people will have sides but I couldn't agree more with your statement, especially with the whole blue navi creature "cgi land" and its length, that does seem to be a "James Cameronism" though doesn't it? Making like really long movies *not that it's a bad thing necessary, obviously each movie needs it's proper amounts of time to setup characters and plot devices and the likes, but James really does pay attention to every detail it seems and the lengths of his films usually dictate that, regardless besides that, the only other copy of True Lies that I had watched was the D-Theater VHS of it and I believe that was 1080i with MPEG-2 compression? I recall the movie having a much warmer color palette on that, but then again even though it was "HD VHS" it still had some of those classic staples of VHS, slight blur / softness to the image, chromatic aberration, washed out colors but obviously nothing horrible and nothing that wouldn't make me not want to watch it, but when jumping over to the 4K it was just shocking seeing how well scrubbed of grain it was, they weren't lying when they said they used different technology since the T2 Lionsgate 4K, I mean there are still moments where some of the characters look a little waxy, but it looks loads better in comparison, the real thing that throws me off is the A.I based image sharpening, it really just exacerbates particular facial features, eyes, nose, mouth/teeth, "key wrinkles if you will", I noticed it alot throughout the film but there were several moments that I noticed more so, for example there is a scene of Tom Arnold and Arnold Schwarzenegger in vehicular pursuit of the "terrorist / antagonist" there were certain moments where I could pause the frame and most of the shot would be a blur *obviously due to the fact that they're driving, and there is a camera car in front of them that's also driving, and the camera is getting whipped around trying to film them* but you upon pausing you would notice that most of the shot would be a blur however, the characters eyes, especially Arnold Schwarzenegger's would be almost crystal clear, but the detail on them and the way they looked it was almost like a painter's interpretation of an eye? I don't know how to describe it in words accurately, but it was just a weird quasi artificial look to it that's all. Apart from the weird occasional hiccups, the movie was still very enjoyable to watch and I was glad to see it again in higher definition. Actually, after writing my previous comment, I watched the abyss that night and in comparison to the True Lies 4K, and other 4K's that I've seen I thought it looked amazing, now I'm going to be honest I hadn't seen The Abyss before this release (on the younger side of things so I didn't have the opportunity to see it went it ran in Theaters, and although I could have picked it up on say DVD at some point secondhand I didn't) just based off what I saw last night it was really good, I mean obviously the CGI shots don't hold up as much as they used to, and the optical effect shots *especially the green/blue screen are very obvious* but it was great, so many of the shots were just teeming with some much detail, I was really blown away, as for how the picture looks in comparison to previous releases or in theaters I couldn't say myself, but I really enjoyed watching it, another long one though, "Special Edition or Directors Cut" hit credits at pretty much 2 hours 40-45 minutes, regardless though. All of this talk about these great movies and James Cameron, got me rewatching your Alien review again and now I want to watch Aliens and see how that one fairs from the other two. Regardless though thank you so much for the response! @@ultraturbosoggy Now that is among the longest of comments I've ever had on this channel so well done for sticking at the keyboard for so long. From what you've said about True Lies you've confirmed that a lot of work went into it. Most people purchasing a 4K disc think all 4K is the same whereas of course for films that have been transferred from the various film gauges and variations of formats within those gauges it's down to how the film looked originally. If it looked great at the time owing to fine grain film stock, good lighting and the best cinematographers then the end product on 4K home video should be very good. However, then a film called TENET comes along and most people think a cine to video transfer is a cine to video transfer but TENET in particular (DUNKIRK too but I'll use TENET as the example as I think it may be the best) was shot mainly 15/70 IMAX. The dialogue sequences were mainly standard 70mm. No digital video recording format comes close and so transferring something that looks so good down to something around one-fifteenth of the quality still results in the best, most exceptional quality. I call this phenomenon the VistaVision effect because VistaVision was invented as a wide format, horizontal shooting 35mm and that had an image are more than two times that of standard, full frame 35mm. There were very few VistaVision projectors in the world so the concept was more to produce superior standard 35mm prints owing to the superior quality of the originating larger film frame format. It worked. And that is why other large film formats result in superior imagery irrespective of whatever they are shrunk down onto. People who have seen TENET can tend to think that exceptional quality is down to the 4K video format and therefore every other 4K disc should look as good. True Lies and The Abyss were shot Super 35 which is a tiny area of the 35mm frame compared to even standard, full frame anamorphic 35mm. They will therefore not look as good as exceptional 4K discs such as TENET and I expect James Cameron wanted to make them as good as possible and as appealing to the masses as possible. I have The Abyss on Super 8 film and even though Fox were unable to supply a 16mm negative for the process of producing the Super 8 prints (a standard 35mm print had to be used to create a 16mm negative from which to strike double Super 8 prints that are then slit into a pair of Super 8 prints) the end result was still impressive. A cut down of True Lies has been released on Super 8 about a year ago but I don't think I've seen it. I do however have the theatrical trailer on Super 8 and it looks pretty darned good. It's a shame this quality wasn't deemed good enough for a 4K home video release but I expect James Cameron has done the best thing possible overall. Aliens was 1.85:1 35mm and I remember not being impressed with the 35mm general release print I saw in 1986. This was because I'd seen the 70mm blow-up three times at the Odeon Leicester Square but I do not recall exactly how good (or not) that was. It's a grainy film on Super 8 and that did come from a 16mm negative. If that is representative, it needed work for the 4K release. Just watch them and enjoy them. Play with settings of player and projector/telly to try to reduce or turn off any digital 'enhancements' because all they do is ruin your image. It could be that something is making these more heavily re-processed movies look a little more artificial than they really are. I had a good experience with American Graffiti whereas most people were berating it. It's possible this is because I have my equipment setup to replicate the look of film as close as I can get it whereas most people wouldn't even know what film looked like. John.

Je suis d'accord Alain, c'est un beau film et sur disque 4K c'est aussi bon qu'il l'était dans les cinémas en 1992. John.
