I never saw Cross of Iron before it's a different kind of war movie for sure. Not what I was expecting but they did manage to come up with an interesting ending. Wish I could have got the rough "grind house" cut but it was only in the collector set. CHL is just a classic and I watch it every summer.

If I'd have known how much I was going to enjoy Cross Of Iron I'd have looked into getting that special Imprint release. What an ending though. I like films that leave you to make up your own mind and mine is that the two men end up respecting each other after bravely fighting their way out of what seems like a hopeless situation. John.

Good point you said at the end. Back in the day, the best you could get for home video was expensive Laserdisc, pan and scan, CRT TVs, VHS. Now we have so much choice, excellent quality almost matching cinema, and for much cheaper including the 4ks. All those beloved old films, shot on film now looking and sounding better than ever and all in our living room.🎞️📽️📀

Great video John 😀👍 I never seen ‘Cool Hand Luke’; one of those classics I need to get onto! I watched ‘Cross Of Iron’ back in January and thought it was a good solid World War film; not seen too many of Sam Peckilnpah’s films; must check out ‘The Wild Bunch’ & ‘Straw Dogs’ at some point. ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ I wasn’t a big fan of on first viewing; but I really come to really like it on subsequent viewings; the acting is fantastic in this; great tension building; some of the dream sequences are very eerie aswell. I definitely should pick it up on 4K at some point; cheers John 😀👍

Straw Dogs is a must-see Sam as Dustin Hoffman and Susan George drive around in a pre-production Triumph Stag and it doesn't get much better than that! It's another controversial film though given its notorious rape sequence which turns into something pretty 'orrible. Rosemary's Baby - is it all in her mind or is it really happening? We're left to decide for ourselves. John.

If you already have Cool Hand Luke on Blu-ray Jonny then stick with that copy. It's not as good as the 4K by quite a margin but it's pointless re-purchasing every film you've own on home video unless it's a particular favourite. I'm having no trouble resisting the 4K of Aliens for example but even when I do purchase a copy of that great film it will only be to scan through it for a KZbin review as I own it on film. Cross of Iron is wonderful by the way. A groundbreaking film. John.

Greetings from Santiago de Chile. Here in my city there is a Movie Arthouse called Normandie that for nearly twenty years focused mostly in the works of european authors and projected mostly on 35mm. All that changed some years ago when they choose digital projection that allowed them to project 3 or 4 different films a day been one of them a recent release (here in Chile new movies debut on thursdays). In these new style of programming they have showed some films of mister Peckinpah's like "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia". Maybe soon they would projected "Cross of Iron" on their screen, but I still love "The Wild Bunch" which for me was his best film. Adiós, amigo.

Greetings from Wiltshire in sunny England Gaspar. You'll be pleased to know that each of these three 4K discs looks to me like good representations of 35mm master prints (i.e. struck directly from the camera negative) and at least in my little home cinema made me feel like I was watching a film rather than a video. That's normal for most 4K discs now but True Lies may be a recent exception even though we got it looking rather good in the end. I've not seen 'Alfredo Garcia' yet but I think Imprint have that Peckinpah classic advertised too. John.

Hi John of the three my favourite is Cool Hand Luke by far. Glad you seem to like it. Rosemary's Baby enjoyed as a drama rather than horror.To my regret never seen Cross of Iron kept it on the back burner somehow never appealed. Don't mind some war movies so I might give this a punt if price favourable. Thanks John.

Evening Mike. I think Cross Of Iron may be the war film that set the standard for how war films would be made afterwards. It must have been a bit of a shocker to many viewers back in 1977 but today is comparably tame to the sort of gore and death we now see portrayed. I thoroughly enjoyed it but perhaps reading all about it in Cinema Retro prepared me for what to expect. John.

@moviecollector5920

It certainly was a different way to depict war up to that time but I expect it set a new standard which has been used as the touchstone ever since. The focus pulling was slightly out quite often but that's not exactly unusual in films and still happens today despite all the immediate playback on set. Just look at all the slightly out of focus shots within last year's Bullet Train to prove that one. John.

The volume of work that goes into putting a film onto 4K is far more than any previous home video format. Most of them are representative of the 35mm general release prints we saw in cinemas so in that regard what they cost is a bargain. Blu-ray is very good though and a fraction of the work required so much cheaper. Perhaps stick with Blu-ray. John.

I haven't seen COME & SEE but I should have so thank you for the reminder Philip. Cross Of Iron was shot in Yugoslavia but was a Hollywood English language film so probably unique in that regard. It was never going to do well in the USA as a result of not having American soldiers in it which I presume the producers realized from the outset but fortunately, it did well in many other countries around the world. I have the film on film so it's not one I would ever watch on video but I have heard about it and know that the 4K was taken from a video prepared for a 3D release. That's why it looks so awful because to get the best 3D effect requires removing every last piece of film grain and hence the sterile look. John.

And how wide was that cinema screen showing 2001 then Dave? I think we both still need to see it on a deeply curved Cinerama type screen but one day I'll tick that one off the list. Cool Hand Luke is wonderful to see in its original 'Scope frame on a big (ish) screen. Just like all three of the films I cover in this video, I can't quite believe I was able to see it in this way at home and in such amazing quality. The cinema really has come to the home market with these 4K releases and I think it heralds a change in what we perceive as cinema. Something I might get the chance to explore further in the future. I'm pleased you enjoy Trevor's channel Dave. He first got in touch with me more than two years ago when he was starting out on KZbin after a serious, life threatening illness. It's lovely to see him doing so well now. He wanted to get close to 700 subscribers by the end of last month and now all of a sudden he's nearly at 900. John.

I suspect that it's the quality of the original shoot rather than something magical with the cine to video transfer. But the people who do the mastering and grading seem to be doing exceptional work now too so that may well be the main cause of the wonderful results we've seen for CROSS OF IRON. They retained the muted colours of the original release prints too which shows an appreciation for film. Things seem to be improving all the time even if many of us haven't been entirely happy with some of the recent releases such as TRUE LIES. John.

The reason why I wanted to see it he’s because comedian Patsy Kelly was in it It’s pretty much the comic relief in spots. That’s the only reason why I wanted to see it. When I first saw it as a teenager I felt the same way but today I can see it for what it is.
