A couple reach a turning point.
UNFORGOTTEN is used with permission from Hariharasudhen Nagarajan. Learn more at hariharasudhen....
Melissa and Nate are six months into a happy relationship. One night, hanging out at home together and caught up in a tender moment, Melissa tells Nate that she loves him for the first time. But Nate is surprised by the sentiment. It's not that he doesn't return the feelings, but he's only said "I love you" to his late wife, who passed away after an illness.
Nate's reluctance sparks a deeper discussion that uncovers just how much Nate's wife still lives on in his memory, as well as the persistence of his grief. Soon, Melissa realizes a bigger question is at stake: does Nate have room in his heart for another love and what does it mean for Melissa?
Directed by Hariharasudhen Nagarajan from a script written by Rebecca Leigh, this short romantic drama has a simplicity in style and execution that belies its powerful emotional impact. Taking place in one room throughout one conversation, its richly layered writing and nuanced, heartfelt performances nevertheless unravel a psychological complexity, as well as bring us to an important precipice for a promising pair of lovers.
The film is shot with warm but moody, lived-in visuals, lensed with an intimacy befitting the cozy "honeymoon" stage of a relationship. Melissa and Nate have been dating for six months, but their rapport and connection seem longer than that. They're wonderfully comfortable with one another, as they laugh over one another's quirks, and they seem like any other couple in love. When that funny moment turns tender, Melissa tells Nate she loves him, but when Nate can't say the words back, it pivots the conversation into a more serious tenor.
Nate speaks honestly about the persistent grief he feels for his late wife, about helplessly watching her die, and how he can't quite let go of her memory. Actor Chris Louis offers a compelling vulnerability in these moments, along with an emotional generosity to Melissa that allows her the space to express her conflicting reactions. As played by the excellent Meg Cashel, who finds a balance between yearning and strength, Melissa has the pivotal choice in the film. She must confront the realization that the ghost of Nate's late wife may never quite disappear -- and Nate may not be able to wholeheartedly embrace the possibilities of a new love and life together at this time.
Part of the pleasure of watching a good "two-hander" is seeing how one conversation or set of moments contains a complexity of human experience. For most people, these are the kind of moments where lives change and the stories of our lives pull one way or another. And that's what happens in UNFORGOTTEN, which becomes a poignant and aching portrait of the intersection of grief and love. It becomes even more devastating when we realize what the true stakes are for Melissa and why it's so important to her, our hearts aching as much as their own at the end of this finely drawn drama.

As a viewer of a short film, there are three key elements one always looks for: 1) the strength of the story conveyed in a limited time, 2) emotional impact, and 3) the ability to capture the audience's attention. The director and the entire team have excelled in all these aspects. It's a remarkable piece of craftsmanship. Congratulations to the whole team, and I wish them even greater success in the future!

Very good actors. Humans are really full of unnecessary drama in life. How is this circumstance even a problem? It's natural for someone who just lost a wife he loved so much to grieve and still hold her dear to his heart. It takes time to heal, right? Then, here's this woman who wants his instant reciprocation of her deep, intense love for him. Such love may not even last and she might be the first to ask for divorce if ever they get married.

This is soo good. Great job! I don't want to spoil anything so I'll try to keep this thoughtfully cryptic. Trauma is kept in the body, physically. Even using our vocal cords to replicate something that is tied to a traumatic moment might prevent us from speaking our truths. If we need to hear the words of love from someone who is traumatized by speaking about them, we may miss the opportunity of confirming that their love exists. Bright futures are for those who remain empathetic and patient.

This is a hard type of relationship to get into, and they are young, which makes her insecurity worse. The words "I love you" having genuine deep meaning for him, instead of mere words to mouth, gives you an idea of the depth of his character. He definitely would have come to the conclusion that he wasn't betraying his first wife by loving again, but the death of his first love is too fresh. In the old days, this was called a rebound relationship, and they may have ended up only staying together for the child. Takes a person with more life experience to patiently wait long enough for the memory of the bereaved partner to fade a bit. But it's dangerous to take up with someone in the throes of a fresh loss as the deceased partner is forever young and perfect in his mind. While others think she should have been just fine with the situation, and I don't think she left in the most mature way, he wouldn't be ready for a family with her yet, and would have felt trapped by her pregnancy. Better to make a fresh start, and give him time to heal, so he can find another love that's not driven by loneliness or urgency. She did the right thing.

I keep forgetting what a pit of misogyny Omeleto comments tend to be. These are two people who are not in a good place to be together. He has issues that he needs professional help with to avoid hurting people he loves the way he's unintentionally hurting her, and she has the need to be loved freely and fully the way she loves him instead of just conforming with the "second best" option available, which he cannot give her. She makes the best decision for both of them. Predictably, comments here are 90% "she's toxic, she's possessive, she's horrible, she's the worst!". Get a grip.

The way she's behaving is unfair, but the real problem is that he wasn't ready to date again. If he were ready to be with her seriously and if there was full compatibility beyond physical attraction then he wouldn't hesitate to say he loves her. Then they would both have the natural understanding that even though he will always have love for his dead wife, he is committed to her now and that is enough. It's vindictive of her to not tell him the news that's revealed to the viewer at the end.

After reading some responses I find it amazing how fast and how far people will jump to conclusions . It’s probably their only exercise ! Let’s try it this way . First , how long ago did his wife pass ? I never heard that . Second , how long have they been together ? I didn’t hear that either . Third , I truly wonder how many people would be like their comments in real life . Put yourself in both sets of shoes and see what you think then . I don’t think it’s unfair to expect someone who gets into a loving relationship to actually be AVAILABLE to be in a loving relationship . Most people race out of one and into the next without taking the time to grieve the last loss . Then being emotionally available to be in the next relationship . If you’re not ready , don’t do that to someone else who is probably unsuspecting . Geeeze !

Most everyone has some insecurities. Life evolves that way. Expressing your feelings of devotion doesn't necessarily require a response.
