When Cullen cried in this scene, the sound he made was the same sound I made when when my dad died. It was like hearing myself make a sound I’d never heard come out of me before. This is one if not the only one series where the main character is portrayed as a REAL MAN. As someone who has had to bury his friends and family, this is a cry of the most upset, despairing, anguished sense. When someone who has seen death and destruction in the sense the Cullen has seen, you have time to grieve but only for a moment or two. Now that his closest friends have now died the emotion thats been inside of him since the start of the war in 1861 has come out, an emotion he probably never felt he’d tap into. Anson is a spectacular actor for sure and I will aways love Hell on Wheels for his performance on the show.

I've cried like this 3 times in my life. A few years after my mum's death and my father's death. It was a realistaion that they were never coming back and the memories of them could not longer feed and sustain this illusion. It is really frightening for other people to hear. The other time was when I had had another very stressful time in my life. This crying is like no other, visceral, gutteral, primitive, totally exhausting mentally and physically and empties you out like a gutted animal. I don't know how Anson Mount replicated this so authentically unless he had experienced this in his own life. An Emmy and more to the man. Cullen Bohannan is the best anti-hero I have ever watched. I might agree were it not for this scene and this scene alone. This was the most gut-wrenching piece of television I've seen in years - maybe ever. It's absolutely worth building up a character if *this* is the sort of payoff you get. Compared to the way TWD did Glen - all anyone felt for that scene was disgust. A main character went "mad" and had to be put down. It hurt so much because Elam was such a strong, powerful character who was like a superhero to the freedmen. There were a lot of deaths, but none hurt like this one. That's damn good tv.
@necratis3 жыл бұрын
@@mybocks3 I agree with everything you said, however I still feel this was kind of out of left field and a quick way to end such a great character as Elam. For example, had they played out this going mad storyline over the course of the season and ended it this way, giving Elam more attention to the build up of his story I would have loved it more, but this felt very rushed, almost as if they begged Common to come back for one episode and he reluctantly accepted. Maybe something went on with his schedule behind the scenes we don’t know about.

Very rough depiciton on the wild west .. People did die . Some scenarious maybe cut from reality . I don't think so many were expecting this act , me beeing one of them . He has lost so many people ... and after this more to come . I just finished this tv series and I'm not 100 percent okay with the directions they took .. however the journey makes sense . They made Cullen so damn unlucky in love ... every woman he loved , dead or lost . Everyone has their opinion about this but for me , Lily could have been the choice they could have went with for longer . The one thing I would have wanted for the character was to at least have Ruth as a friend or partener.. it was so damn sad what happened to her . I for one I couldn't watch that damn scene without tears in my eyes and i didn't think I could cry like that for a fictional character . Kasha Kropinski nailed that role .. truly amazing performance . All those decisions made Cullen go one the path he went . At times disturbing but at the end it made sense .

I know that Common wanting to leave the show affected where Elam's death would have been placed, but I still think *this* should have been the reason Cullen leaves the Union Pacific and goes to California. Maybe its just that I think Ruth's character arc was just really wimpy at the end (especially since her decision to essentially die like a martyr feels at odds with her not wanting to be like her father), but it didnt strike me as really affecting Cullen enough to leave in pursuit of his family. This scene, this beautiful scene, should have been the thing that made him want to go.

@Al simmons i think its more along the lines of all the death he’s seen as being a veteran of a conflict that killed 600,000+ Americans in the course of 4 years and 358 days, he hasn’t has time to mourn properly. Being friends with a former slave has literally nothing to do with the fact he has to put his friend down.
