Lord Kuruku is a really underrated anime villain. Once you know his backstory, you really see the complexity in his character.

God I love this scene. I was never really scared of it as a kid, but fell in love with Toby's theme. It was one of the first songs I learned to whistle. My mom loved anything disco and even she would be humming it at times when it was playing on the TV set. So mysterious and with a disco groove!

I watched so many anime series and films in my lifetime but there was none as creepy as this scene where Toby is like the Pied Piper of Hamelin has taken the humanity of his neighbors whom he turned into living puppets until he brings them all to his master. The sound of Toby's flute, which is without a name stayed with me for years until the Internet piqued by curiosity to rediscover what this is. The other part of this story that stayed with me is Unico's never-ending life of loneliness where he has to lose his friends in the end.

@@glenngriffon8032 Not sure what public tv programming was like in the USA in the 80s/90s, but in Europe, this would’ve been broadcast as a children’s channel movie; even Japanese animation was a lot more suggestive/violent (uncensored, gory Fist of the North Star episodes during breakfast hours on kids channels). I understand that to see that in the US, you had to buy the VHS as an adult.
