I grew up with both Winx and WITCH, and i personally always found WITCH more mysterious and interesting because of the dark and more «realistic» mirroring of fantasy.
@TwilightWolf0323 жыл бұрын
I never liked the style of Winx Club. I tried getting into it last month, but the soft magic system and rather juvenile depiction of what a high school life is (I mean, the cast is tasked with preparing a dance party ON THEIR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, where the first years are just supposed to organize and execute without even knowing each other and they still manage to pull it off) have kept me from enjoying it. I see Winx Club as too laser focused on being the show for girls, while WITCH, Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon and most shoujo anime and manga like Aoharaido target the female audience but still manage to capture the male audiences as well because of how strong the writing is. So, yeah, WITCH wins for me.

WITCH is my favorite childhood show, but I barely watched any Winx episodes, they bored me every time they were on. I also don't personally like the art style for Winx, nothing seemed like a serious threat and there were too many characters for me. Another reason, and a bit embarrassing one to remember now, is that I liked that WITCH was less explicitly girly. I was a tomboy and while now I definitely love lots of pink, cutesy, "girly" things, I surely had my "I'm not like other girls" phase. I didn't care about colorful outfits and backgrounds, I just wanted to see superpowered girls fighting creepy monsters.
@ynat19033 жыл бұрын
@@vuivraalbastra I don't think it's neccessary to be embarrassed about that. A lot of the shows that were targeted to girls during that time were often very feminine and hit a lot of the stereotypes of what girls are supposed to like and witch was one of the few shows that offered something bit different. I never really vibed with winx either because it just felt like "you are a girl so this is what you should like" type of thing and it just wasn't for me. Witch was the first time I actually identified with the female characters in the content I consumed, before that I always liked the boy characters more because they seemed more relatable to me.

Taranee has actually a good character development when she refuse to be a Guardian and her problematic relationship with her mother and Nigel. I didn't understand what happen to her - she likes photography in first comics, why creators turned her interest into dancing? Nigel's character is actually good and Taranee sacrifice a lot of nerves and home wars to be with Nigel - screw it, give Taranee a new boyfriend from nowhere. About the line "Tell the men to stay strong and the women not to worry" and its implicit partiarc system: I am Italian, so I always watched the show in Italian and, watching your video, I did not remember this line to be like this, so I re-watched the first episode and it actually says "Dì al popolo di essere forte: spero che nessuno debba soffrire" which translates to "Tell the people to be strong: I hope no one will suffer". I don't know why the english line is more misogynist that the original but I think it would be an interesting topic to discuss (how dubbing can change the implicit messages directed to the audience)

How is the English line misogynist ? How does Not wanting women not to worry themselves translate to misogyny. Idk if you know but misogyny means “ a hatred of women”. As a tomboy who absolutely LOVED W.I.T.C.H. (both the show and comics) as a teen. I can tell you this was made for people who don’t necessarily WANT to be feminine. I loved it because the girls could just be themselves and wear jeans and baggy sweaters and still like boys. It was like me, I could see myself in these characters. It was more mature and realistic compared to WINX (which I also liked but not as much). I think I’m glad the show ended where it did, ending on such a high and great note and didn’t get milked and ruined the same way WINX has now been.
@Nemamka3 жыл бұрын
Thank you I was thinking the same thing! It never bothered me if they made it intentionally more appealing to boys, because it was appealing to ME. The characters looked like very NORMAL 13 year-olds, for god's sake, that's how old I was and that's how I looked when I read the comics too. I just remember identifying with some aspects of each of the characters as a kid - not a child but not a ~girl (especially not a woman) yet, just a _kid_ . They were feminine enough when they changed but also their witch clothes still remained practical and dare I say, Cornelia was just... classy in both forms with her pinstraight hair. So was Taranee, I adored her nerdy style too. _And_ Will and Irma, and of course Hay Lin was very unique with her bubbly yet soft character. Who's to say what is feminin 'enough'? I think the _point_ of the five girls was that each of them represented a range of femininity and I loved them the way they were. Everyone knows puberty is a whole entire MESS anyway, but we tend to forget.

W.I.T.C.H was really refreshing for not being overly feminine. Tbh, for a tomboy like me who heard everyday that I was wrong to look like that, having a show where the characters weren't perfect models with sparkly bright tight clothes was comforting. Same for the dark, the rain ( something we don't see a lot in winx for example), the importance of Halloween in the comic, the diversity in the families as well, the fact all girls didn't have to be in couple or stay forever together ( in one of the comics they could see their possible futures and almost none of them were with the same bf they had). It was like having an autumn in all those summer like shows. I just hope they won't do a reboot, it would probably lost a lot of the comic & earlier show's peculiar spirit, which made its charm, to became a bland trendy generic show.

People who read the comics actually know that Irma, while being more feminine in the comics, actually stands up for herself and has the exact same sense of humour as cartoon-Irma. Also, she NEVER had the power to control minds in the comics. Another inaccuracy: yes, Cornelia stands up for the underdog, but she's everything as the group's "mother" in the comics. She's not maternal at all, in the comic panels shown in the video she stands up for Will when she's bullied but not because she's maternal, but rather because she's authoritarian. Cornelia in the comics is bossy, serious and had quite a cold personality that takes a lot to "melt", she's everything but maternal. In fact, there are also many instances in which Cornelia acts on her own without of the group because she wants to be alone and being very authoritarian she's also the one who questions Will's right as a leader.

The history teacher is about to tell her to speak in front of the class and she mentally persuades him to ask her about the stone age (the only thing she read about). And then Hay Lin is like “it always works for you, doesn’t it?” but they might have dropped it later in the comics 🦔 I also like how they show most of the girls powers in the first chapters. I find Phobos fascinating and he's still one of my favorite bad guys. I've always liked gender-discrimination reversal in fantasy societies (DND Drow FTW); it holds up a mirror that asks why we take certain gender norms for granted and how power influences the gender constructs. The royal family of Meridian is a matriarchy; if we gender-swap this into a standard medieval universe, Phobos is the capable princess being passed over for her younger brother who still a child. He was valued less because of his gender, but obviously felt like he was an equal, and as a woman in the real world, I relate. There is a dark, unexplored journey that explains what led Phobos from passover prince to Usurper Tyrant; this is the kind of stuff that fanfiction was made for. Someone write that fic, right now!

Because WITCH didn't meet Educational/Informative requirements, it had to be aired at 12pm, which is a bad time slot. By US federal law, TV stations must air at least three hours of E/I programs per week. Because of low ratings, there was little advertising revenue and very low merchandise sales in the USA. Had it been aired on The Disney Channel on a regular basis instead if weekend afternoons it might gave earned better ratings. Most Americans have no awareness of the WITCH property. A reboot mixing the best elements if the comics and the best of the original animated series on Disney Plus would be best.
@Thex-W.I.T.C.H.-xMaster Жыл бұрын
@Outsider12 I stand by what I said. If you watch the original Animated Series and compared it to the comic issues they are different in alot of ways and in my opinion and in the opinions of many many others the Animated Series was better. The characters have much better personalities and the character development is much better compared to the comic issues that the Animated Series is based off of. And another thing to consider is I'd say more people knew about the Animated Series then the comics because Television can reach much large audiences then the comics so to me canceling it just meant that the whole W.I.T.C.H. franchise was hurt. Disney could of totally kept this series going and had they it would of just gotten more popular. Another thing is Disney payed for Season 3 during the Season 2 and still canceled it the proof of this is simple they ended Season 2 by showing the Computer Teacher to the girls at the last minute this was a big signal that a third season was coming. SIP Animation wouldn't of ended Season 2 the way they did had they known Disney was out right canceling W.I.T.C.H. after just two Seasons. Many of the rumors I heard about W.I.T.C.H said that Disney payed for Season 3 during the halfway point of Season 2. The bottom line to me is Disney didn't do as much as they could to keep this Animated Series going and they used ratings as an excuse for canceling it... the best way they could fix this is to make a third season based off the original two Seasons of the Animated Series and bring back as many of the original voice actors and writers as possible. Have a good day...

I have so many feelings about Cornelia! I read the comics as a kid before watching the show, and she was by far my favorite character in the comics. I loved her maturity and gentle hippie vibs. So seeing how different she is in the show was such a shock that I hated her at the time. It made me so mad because it felt like they made her the stuck up girly girl just because she's blond. looking back on it, it doesn't bother me as much and a nature magic user who's discussed by nature is kind of a funny trope. her relationship with Caleb is my favorite part of the story ether way, comic or show.

I think the only reason why Blunk exists is to appeal to boys who may not like girls shows but it kinda backfires because he makes it more difficult for the girls to get immersed. I recently read comics again and I would not call her "prepped princess", could you explain a bit more why you said that?
@naomi79183 жыл бұрын
@@mpGreen03 English is not my first language so I thought prepped princess was the good way to describe her. I just think that in the comics she was way more feminine and cared more about her appearance and stuff. I remember moments like when she transformed in her « hero » form, that looks older, to impress an older guy she had a crush on. And then started complaining because she couldn’t turn back to normal properly ( like big head on a child’s body). Another time when her step mom wanted to give her some advice ( or was angry at her, don’t remember fully) and Irma called her out saying she wasn’t her mom. You know stuff like that, I thought she was quite mean at times
@mpGreen033 жыл бұрын
@@naomi7918 Hmm. I see. English isn't my first language too. Idk, Cornelia in the comics is the girly one too, she cares about fashion, beauty, her hair especially, she also is more elegant and uptight, so she always reminded me of Princess type character. Irma is girly too, but not as much, Irma cares about rock music and boys, but Cornelia already had her eyes set on Caleb, later on Peter. Irma wore pink, skirts and flowers on her more often than Cornelia, they both are girly but Cornelia reminds me of princess trope while Irma doesn't. And Irma shouting at her mom - I don't think that it ties with princess like behaviour also, they simply got into fight, Irma as many teenagers would do said something that she later on regretted very much.

@@naomi7918 I think that it all comes down to high tension during that arc, but yeah Irma could def. be harsh and brash sometimes, later on regretting it xd, but being mean does not equal to being girly or princess like, we at least to me. But it was nice discussion, thanks!

Ironically, in the case of MLP, the _extreme_ girliness and being obviously intended for a _much younger crowd_ (albeit with the standard jokes and dialogue that parents would appreciate while watching with their kids) was something that worked in its favour, because the adult male fandom was largely started by people watching it _ironically_ on 4chan, where the joke was "We're the cesspool of the Internet and we're openly terrible people, isn't it funny that we like the friendship show?" Then it became unironic because even being a channer asshole doesn't make you immune to good writing. At least everyone that I've seen says the writing is good, I never got into it myself. I just watched the Jenny Nicholson video. "Girly stuff" aimed at older audiences with darker themes (like WITCH) would probably struggle to cultivate the same ironic following that was so key to MLP's explosion of popularity. Also they're not likely to be as merch-driven, we can't ignore the "Hasbro will gladly take an adult male audience with more disposable income, that's where the lion's share of their Transformers money comes from" factor in this. Other kids' shows have been cancelled for having the "wrong audience." Also, to the people bringing up DC stuff, the point here is "Boys will watch female-led shows aimed at a female target audience", not "Boys will like prominent female characters in male-led shows with a male target audience". Those are very different things.

From perspective of someone growing as gingerhead - besides the color being very eyecatching, since this is a kids show, i think another reason could be to uplift them with the bullying they may experience(per example ive heard often that my hair is diarrhea color). The reason I think it may be like that is that both shows have great representation and probably also helped empower POC youth too, it kind of feels like creators of both Winx and WITCH made sure to include many archetypes prone to bullying in our world in the main cast, let it be based on genetics, upbringing or character traits. I think the shows actually helped me embrace first my red undertones and then eventually also even the silver(since i started going grey since i was like 13), I didn't feel being unique was bad and I can find my place and meaning regardless. I'm pretty sure, aware of that or not, a lot of us who followed the shows can relate to that feeling.

If there was a remake I'd like something that took the best of both the comic and the cartoon and added some character exploration like the Taranee's race issues you mentioned in the video or fix the ableism in the Arkhanta arc. I'd especially keep Comic Will and Susan's relationship, as someone who read the comics as a teen, it reminded so much of my relationship with my own mother. I can appreciate the complexity of the parental relationships in the comics even more as an adult. That was some deep stuff. Also, Orube never got animated and that's a crime. And as someone who prefers the comic over the cartoon in almost everything, I'm surprised you think Cartoon Ellyon had a lack of introduction. Cartoon Ellyon shows up in several episodes before we find out she is Phobos's sister and later episodes with Cedric getting closer to her and the girls being completely unaware and accidentally alienating her are genuinely tense, we know what's going to happen and can do nothing to stop it. We only know Comic Ellyon for less than a chapter and she goes from friend to merciless antagonist in the spam of an evening. We don't even know what Cedric told her, yet she goes farther than Cartoon Ellyon ever did in spite of the latter having more build-up. Cartoon Ellyon's naivety can be annoying but it's more coherent than Comic Ellyon going from psychologically torturing Taranee for a week and try to kill the girls several times with a smile on her face to "good girl manipulated by her evil brother".
@Lissa23553 жыл бұрын
RIGHT?!?!? I remember HATING Ellyon when I was a child because I couldn't understand doing that to her friends (especially Cornelia). The only reason I begun to like her was because of a special edition completely about her life in Meridian; it was never because she had a redemption ark, I liked her because of the world she introduced in that single comic and how she interacted with it

W.I.T.C.H. is one of those shows that helped create the Greg Weisman Curse Theory. You see every show that Greg Weisman worked on as a producer from Gargoyles to Young Justice only lasted two seasons (Gargoyles: The Goliath Chronicles is a separate show from Gargoyles). This includes Gargoyles, W.I.T.C.H., Spectacular Spider-Man, and Young Justice. The show that is said to have broken that is Star Wars Rebels which lasted for four years... yet funnily enough Weisman was only a producer on it for two years. Many jokingly said that's why he gave Young Justice season 2 a subtitle so that way the universe would think it was a different series and thus wouldn't be cancelled. Also with the return of Young Justice many are wondering if the second season of its return will be its last or if Greg Weisman only getting two years of a show each time he runs one will continue.

I was obsessed with the W.I.T.C.H. comics, magazines and books when I was younger. To be honest, I didn't even _know_ that there was a cartoon until a few years ago - I'm not sure if it was even translated into my language? It just wasn't on my radar at all when I was a kid, I never saw it. But the comic/magazine storylines went on for ages and were pretty mature at times, which I appreciated back then because it felt like the writers weren't trying to talk down to me. It was nice to have the W.I.T.C.H. grow up alongside me and get older and wiser together with me. There was just SO MUCH that happened in those magazines and comics, you have no idea! They were great! Also, Hay Lin is the best. Looking back, I think she was one of the first blorbos I ever had. xD Or maybe crushes. A bit of both, perhaps. I was so invested in her.

YES! I’ve been waiting for this for forever. W.I.T.C.H. is what introduced me to magical girl stories and it’s still my fave. I love how you said the driving force behind W.I.T.C.H. should have been women and marginalized creators, especially considering it was three women who created the series but oh well…Disney. Also a few years ago one of the showrunners, Greg Weisman, went on reddit to answer fan questions and interestingly he said that he wanted to explore a more romantic relationship between Nerissa and Cassidy but of course Disney being cowards never allowed that. He said that he would love to see the show continue and explore those things, he is even open to Cornelia and Irma getting together because fans really seem to want this ship to happen. And may I say I stan. Although I would love for the OG show to pick up where it left off I know that wouldn't be so great. The smartest thing to do is get people who worked on the comics and the show to create something new that satisfies both the comic book fans and the show fans. Greg also said that no, Winx Club’s ‘competition’ was not the reason why W.I.T.C.H. got cancelled, it was because of lack of proper management and genuine interest from Disney. Where Winx Club had Rainbow championing behind it without even having Disney’s resources, Disney treated W.I.T.C.H. like shit and like you said stirred away from calling it a girl’s show. I mean they could have put it on Disney Channel, like the biggest kids’ channel in the world and given it more proper marketing with a distinct identity but nooooo. Funnily enough I used to hate Winx Club because I thought it was the reason W.I.T.C.H. got cancelled and was getting the attention W.I.T.C.H. deserved (and honestly W.I.T.C.H. was the one who deserved 8 seasons not Winx, Winx had a clear arc that should have ended after the first movie or even S4 before Nickelodeon had time to get its filthy, greedy hands on it) but then I watched the first episode and became OBSESSED with both shows. I was the weird kid who couldn’t pick a side and was getting called a traitor lol. I think both shows had their strengths and weaknesses (mainly sexualizing the girls to no end, yikes) but when it comes to storytelling and world building, besides setting aesthetics, I will always choose W.I.T.C.H. (maybe it’s just me being biased). For me Winx just stopped making sense after S4 or even before that in terms of rules of world building (like how did Roxy get Believix if she didn’t have magic Winx? Or why did they abandon Enchantix even though it was supposed to be the last and most powerful fairy form? Obviously Nick is largely at fault for messing everything up). W.I.T.C.H. dealt with more serious issues like tyrannical governments and practical slavery of its people, corrupt governing of other dimensions, teenage depression and anxiety, body issues (which Winx had a slight problem with) etc. Not to say Winx didn’t engage with serious topics but it was bubblier, in my opinion. Which is why if I were to sit down and chill while watching something, I would pick Winx, it was more light-hearted and fun. Whereas as W.I.T.C.H. was sometimes really dark, even for me, and was taking itself a bit too seriously. So yes, I love both of them and we should stop pitting strong women against each other. Clearly both shows resonated with people in different ways but unfortunately got grossly mishandled after a while and crashed and burned. When it comes to picking between show W.I.T.C.H and comic book W.I.T.C.H. I would choose the show because I’m more of a plot-driven viewer and the comics were more character driven but again I could be biased. I think I prefer the show dynamic between the girls mostly because of the character changes you mentioned like Irma being a sassy queen. So, in conclusion, yes it deserved better and if people had just given it a chance it could have become the show we all wanted. I think the comic book fans were sometimes a bit too critical, not realizing it was supposed to be a tv adaptation and as such some arcs would not work as well as they did in the comics. Plus, the show creators just not giving a damn. I will die bitter but before that I shall keep harassing Disney+ until they revive it. Or if Netflix wants to they can stop funding bs like Fate or…Tall Girl 2 *facepalm* and do something actually worthwhile.

This is my first time hearing about the drama behind the comic, and it explains EVERYTHING, oh boy. Back then as a teen I already noticed the severe drop in quality with the Ragorlang arc (with the plot getting lost under trivial teenage drama even for full issues) and dropped the series, and when I later read the rest of the comic, the 'reboot' with the new power arc was absolutely horrendous, ooohhh boy! It's as if they suddenly got a whole new crew of writers and changed almost everythig they could from dropping previous plot lines to changing characters completely *coughMattcough*. I was heartbroken, because WITCH was my CHILDHOOD (the comics were HUGE in Europe back then), and even now I re-read my comics (arcs 1-5) every year simply because the art is so goooood. It deserved better future. Finally hearing explanation and knowing that the eventual decline in quality indeed was because of core members leaving makes my soul rest better, thank you.

Also it's bit funny to hear those people claiming WITCH wasn't as feminine, when the comics at least were embracing feminity all the time. The comics were pretty and sparkly and magical and completely aimed at young girls, mostly pre-teens.
