Hello friends - I am uploading this again with edits due to NFL Copyright claims.
Here are bits and pieces of Week 16's The NFL Today on CBS. I have some pregame, halftime and postgame pieces included. Brent Musburger, Irv Cross, Will McDonough and others report on the Week 16 action on Christmas Eve 1989. Enjoy plenty of scores, highlights and more. Due to NFL Copyrights I had to remove The NFL Today "plays of the year."

End of an era regarding this being the last regular-season NFL Today edition for Brent and Irv (Brent being fired and ending up with ABC, Irv being demoted to analyst on a mid-level crew alongside Tim Ryan, Dick Butkus leaving to focus on his acting career and Will McDonough leaving for NBC) And I think this might be the first time I can recall an on-camera appearance of Don Robertson.

IKR. BTW I'm still waiting for Les Moonves to apologize for ruining The NFL Today when James Brown returned to CBS in 2006 and they subsequently added some worthless comedy to it to compete against ESPN and Fox. Pregame shows should be serious, not comedic. Do you agree?

"Irv being demoted to analyst on a mid-level crew alongside Tim Ryan" That he indeed was, but he took it in stride and didn't complain, per his autobio Bearing the Cross-- he said that if that's what CBS wanted him doing after he left The NFL Today, then he would accept that willingly, and he did.

The toilets actually froze at Texas Stadium the day before the Cowboys game. Which led to one of the all-time newspaper ledes from Frank Luksa of the Dallas Times Herald: “The 1989 season was so bad it wouldn’t even flush.”

Oh, God...as a young Cowboys fan (seven years old at the time), 1989 was rock bottom. The game was blacked out locally in DFW -- also, it had gotten so cold that the pipes in Texas Stadium froze, leading to a decrease in restroom facilities. Frank Luksa, then of the old Dallas Times-Herald, said it best to sum up that 1-15 campaign: "The 1989 season was so bad, it wouldn't even flush." Yet after that 1-15 season? Things would only improve -- and the rest was history.

Les Moonves and Sean McManus should apologize for ruining The NFL Today turning it into a Fox NFL Sunday and ESPN NFL Countdown clone by adding comedy to it to compete against Fox and ESPN when JB returned to CBS in 2006. Period.

@@_FootballForever Les f**king Moonves should be ashamed for ruining The NFL Today. I mean, when JB himself James Brown returned to CBS in 2006, they turned that pregame show into a rip-off of both Fox NFL Sunday and ESPN NFL Countdown by adding comedy to it. Remember when JB along with Dan Marino, Bill Cowher, Boomer Esiason and Shannon Sharpe mocked Matt Millen, Tiki Barber, Dennis Green and Tara Conner with those "Unknown T.E. Speaks", "Tiki in Canton?" and "Meltdown of the Year" skits as well as mocking Tim Tebow's kneeling habit (aka the "Tebowing")? Those were not funny. CBS is just desperate to compete against Fox and ESPN in the comedy pregame category that's why they do that. Thank God NBC's pregame show (Football Night in America) doesn't do comedy. They remain serious just like in the old NFL/AFL/AFC era days (1939, 1955-1963, 1965-1997) compared to the comedy crap that CBS, Fox and ABC/ESPN/Disney are doing to boost ratings, viewers and money. Remember, a pregame show should be a pregame show, not a comedy style skit show freak ride like we all see on SNL or any worthless late night show (Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, James Corden and Stephen Colbert, I'm lookin' at the four of you). Pregame shows should be about serious talk regarding X's and O's, not sensationalism. Plus, people watch pregame shows for serious analysis and features on players, coaches and most importantly, the game ahead, not hear some comedy shitty garbage. Like I said, NBC doesn't do the comedy jackass trash like ABC/ESPN, CBS and Fox are doing. NBC's pregame show remains serious. As for Dan and Shannon, they both got the boot from CBS, LOL. As for Les Moonves, he will be forever known as the man that ruined a once great pregame show in The NFL Today. Do ya agee?

They changed it for the 1989 season. The 1983-88 theme is still in my head all of these years cause I really started to follow football in the late 80's and of course I lived in the Washington DC area and still do currently. My TV was locked on channel 9 (WUSA) for the NFL Today and then either an early game or late game depending on when Washington or someone in the NFC East was playing or if Washington was on NBC (WRC)
