Uniden Bearcat 980SSB "beep removal" and a few tune up tips while the lids are off...

This was supposed to be an 8 min look at the basics of a Uniden 980SSB. I'm no expert on the Uniden Bearcat 980SSB but that annoying beep, it had to go....So off the lids came and out with a circuit. While inside, I thought, lets have a play and maybe show a few of you some simple adjustment points to get your Uniden functioning right on specification. Pls be careful to use a very small iron for the removal of the smd resistor. I also caution you on some points to avoid any twisting and turning. Also, no point going wild trying to get huge watts out of this model, they will work forever at legal power, so my advice is to enjoy them and not try to stretch them too far.(Ssb 18w pep max AM 6w max if your are outside Australia, SSB 12w pep max, AM 4 watts max in Australia to not breach ACMA type approval) Cheers Brenton vk3cm jdw229 pls subscribe and also feel free to join us on Facebook at Aussie Radio Pickers or vk ham sales and service anytime

when you're receiving on SSB, you need to adjust your fine/course clarifier to make the recieve clear and to understand their transmission.

Yeah " u will set that back to 12 watts" 🤭 I'm sure lol 😆 I had mine peaked and tuned and it's doing 15 watts am and sideband its the best radio I ever had in my dump truck gets out so far with a Wilson 5K and we only run AM company channel. Great video

The first version had the beep permanently but you can remove it internally. The second version has the ability to turn it off from the controls. To know what version you have look at the rear and alongside the antenna connector if there is a screw its the first version if only a hole then its the second version.

Just purchased one new from Amazon and it only does 2.5 watts on am and 5 watts on sideband. How do i increase to what they claim it will do. I found the AM pot but no the SSB one. Thanks.

It's a good radio. That dang beep is a pain a little info taking the resistor out doesn't fully get rid of the beeps if you plug in an external speaker you can still hear it lower which makes me wonder if a different value resistor can be added to lower the beep hmm 🤔

When in scan mode does it also scan the USB and LSB's, or does it just scan the main 40 channels?

Whatever mode you have the radio set to at the time. You also need the squelch set, so it is a bit useless. Memory scan also does not save the mode (AM/LSB/USB). If you program 16, 35 LSB and say 8 AM - it will scan memories at the currently selected mode.

I can live with the beep. (Mine is a 1st Gen. so, it can't be shut off by pressing ANL/NB). I just want the LCD to work again.

uniden 980 - For models produced after 10/2015: Press and hold the ANL/NB button for one second to turn key beep tone on and off. Use this button to turn key beep on and off. Press and hold until BP ON or BP OFF displays. for models before 10/2015 - Locate the writing Q217 on the board. almost directly under the "1" in Q217 where it is printed on the board is a component. Remove it using a soldering iron, BE CAREFUL and use a magnifying glass

Use CONT in the Menu to change intensity as well as Bright

as a UK operator we do have one of these Radios. Really stable, and receive nice reports coming back. Yes i removed the bleep, other than that very happy with it. Worth considering.
