Uniden Pro-520XL Tune-up Report

Got one of these a year ago for offroading. I go solo a lot since I don’t have family nearby. Anyways I am a beginner. I don’t know how to tune or what is needed or to look out for. For long drives across the US I like to listen to truckers or people in general. I don’t talk on it because I like to listen. I 100% have something wrong or didn’t do something right. It worked once and I just get static on all channels anywhere I go. I’m here though trying to learn. Love my little radio. Don’t want to give it up. I’m up here in the PNW.

Agreed. I bought a Galaxy DX 959 from Bell's CB / Screwdriver many years ago now - excellent radio! I also second that the Uniden PRO520XL (and related Uniden PRO505XL and Uniden PRO510XL radios) are "little beasts" as one commenter put it. Check out the Chinese copy too...the Luiton LT-298. I'm of the opinion that everyone with a pickup truck, SUV or van should have at least a Uniden 510 or Uniden 520 in it.

I bought one of these in the late 80s when they first came out & the first one in our town. Our local CB Tech "Shiloh" cranked that little dude up & it was just about the loudest barefoot radio around. I started a craze on them. I even bought the first PC-33 in our town & it was almost just as loud. I often wondered if they didn't use the same board.

What are the readings before the tune up with the mic that comes with it??? I just bought 2 of these. Having issues with one of them getting really bad interference from the antenna.

Have the new version of the 520xl..as well as was given a trc-485 for ssb i run in the car. what would you recommend for a half decent base station antenna to throw up, good but simple to mount as im in a duplex, thx.

I have one and straight out of the box it sounds off frequency. It’s dead on though. I must’ve gotten a bad one. Made in Vietnam. I’ve tried several different mics, removed the limiter and it made it way worse. Put it right back in. You have to be way off the mic for people to understand you. I miss the old ones that sounded so good stock.
