1986 i was beaten really bad by my stepfather. i packed a gym bag, and with 98 cents in my pocket, i ran away from home at the age of 16. and hitchhiked from Michigan to California to start a new life. i can still remember thumbing on the highway while singing this song to myself. this song got me through some really hard times when i was a kid.

Been there. Tried so many times on my own to quit. Withdrawing is pure hell. Needed physical and emotional relief so bad I would start again. Vicious cycle. Due to mental illness I have had since a teen I had to be hospitalized(opioids contributed to mental instability but hospitalized multiple times before w/o opioid addiction). While there I got for treatment for addiction. I realize not everyone has access and means for professional help. If you do take advantage of it. My boyfriend quit on his own. I didn’t have what it takes. All that to say “never surrender”. Wishing you the best. I know the pain you are experiencing.

It IS an anthem and a powerful one at That. It is a rare song that crosses Generations. I had 2 small children when this came out, and those words in that song got me through a lot. NEVER SURRENDER. The kids of today will never get to experience the pure talent and powerful songs that we did in the 70's and 80's. I don't know what that crap is that they're passing of as music now. It's all studio mix-ups. All they have to do now is dance like...no words. Shaking your butt is not dancing. Most concerts are just lip-synced. They try to distract the fact they can't sing by putting on a light and sparkle show.

The summer of 1985 was the greatest of my teen years. Corey Hart's music was playing on the radio. I found myself dating a girl named Rhonda who was a year older than me. She was always turning guys down left and right, some were even over 20. I was 15 and she was 16, the whole town was talking about this young kid who stole the heart of the hottest girl. We parted ways but we'll always have the summer of 1985.

Yes the summer of 1985 was a bittersweet one for me too, I too was 15. It had some of the best music ever including :"voices carry", "invincible", "view to a kill", "1 nite in bangkok" and SOOOO many others. It was bittersweet however because in that summer, my father decided he wanted to move closer to his work and didnt seem to care much about his 7 kids and all the friendships they would lose and having to continue high school in a totally new city and knowing absolutely nobody.

The lyrics to this song is extremely powerful. For those of us who were teenagers during the 80’s know the hardships we experienced and what this song meant to us. I firmly believe that people who considered giving up on life during that time reconsidered because of this song. Am I wrong ?

MaxFit 68...totally agree! I was already cutting,my mind started trying to convince me that if I just cut myself deeper it would end all my pain. Life was always very difficult for me despite the heartache I tend to find myself right back here listening to 80s songs! I never went to a therapist but one day I realized I was hating so many ppl just because somehow I saw their behavior as the same as my family and I realized I was waiting for an apology that I will never receive. Now that I have released that I am so much happier and now enjoy discovering all the new things that come with each new day

I was a young man in the '80's and it was a wonderful decade. For me the world was new, everyday an adventure and music and film were in a golden era. All I had to do was turn on the radio and the AM band was crowded with stations playing what ever music I wanted to hear. Movie theaters had excellent films. Christmas 1986 I saw Platoon, Little Shop of Horrors, and Star Trek IV on the same day. I listened to this tune on the way home that night. *****

Corey's early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when "First Offense" came out in '83, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Hall & Oates, but I think Corey has a far more sly, earnest sense of humor. In '85, Corey released "Boy in the Box", his most accomplished album. I think his undisputed masterpiece is "Never Surrender". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the ethics of never quitting on yourself or your dreams no matter how challenging or daunting, it's also a personal statement about the man itself.

Love the 80s, loved it then, being a teen and young adult and still the best era in music and entertainment in general. The music was beautiful, the MTV actually showed it videos of music, not some BS and the life was fun, great and we enjoyed ourselves, made beautiful memories through music and through that era of being alive. It was truly the best decade to be young. Loved this song when I heard it on the MVT and saw the video for the first time and enjoy it just as much now, if not more, knowing that those times will never repeat themselves.

This song reminds me of some incredible people who left this world in the prime of their lives in the 80's. I watched so many of them fight with every once of courage they could muster. We all talk about the good times in the 80's, but let's not forget our friends who did not make it out of the decade due to a virus and an uncaring government. This song will always remind me of their brave fight.
