Good point about not being able to combine internal and external storage capacities, and I generally agree with your concern over use of flash for surveillance. At least “normal” flash. One reason to use an external 128 GB SD card might be to preserve the UDR’s internal storage from wearing out, letting the external storage be sacrificial and replacing it whenever needed. Sticking with the internal storage makes sense for a less demanding application like Talk. With Protect on my UDR, I’m testing a Samsung PRO Endurance 128GB card which claims: “Continuous recording up to 25x longer than speed-focused cards gives you long-lasting, best-in-class endurance up to 43,800 hours (5 years). The PRO Endurance secures data with an industry-leading limited warranty up to 5 years and captures surveillance footage up to 128GB of storage space.” I interpret that to mean the Pro Endurance cards already come with a heaping helping of sacrificial bits themselves. Since I have just two G3 series cameras set for motion-only recording, check back with me in about 50 years or so to see how the card is holding up. 😉 Regarding speed, I have 500M symmetrical fiber and the UDR’s internal speed test gets every bit of that. With IPS set to “high”, a laptop with 1G Ethernet and a phone with WiFi6 both also get very near the 500M up/down throughput using various 3rd party speed test apps. WiFiman scores a bit lower, but just on the upload. I’m not sure how much a speed test really stresses the IPS system, and aside from the cameras there is no regular network load, but the performance sure seems fine to me for the intended applications.

The UDR seems great for the home. At $79 it was a no brainer. At $199 its still good, especially if you want to have a network with multiple AP. The way it moves devices to the best AP is a big help. I set one up at my mom's house with the Unifi Talk ATA phone line adaptor. Moved her home phone to that, which is saving $50 / month. It made it easy to set up an IVR - which sounds ridiculous in the home but I find that adding just a voice prompt stops all spam callers. She was getting 20 calls a day. Friends and family self-select one option, solicitations choose the option with voicemail (which is emailed to me), I can also give people an option to ring to my mobile phone or my sister, so that her friends can easily reach us. It's actually super helpful and a big upgrade to home phone. I also helped a friend set up a new network with two additional AP, running off the POE ports. The downside here is that the UDR can't support a 1gig connection. It's capped at 800MBps. Also, it might be nice to have a more apps. Protect and Talk seem useful for the home. I actually was able to turn both on, no devices on Protect, but can see that the CPU is at 83% most of the time. There's lots of other home security camera options (wyze, Ring, nest), so not sure I need Protect here anyway but maybe in the future that will have more appeal...

The thing with ubiquiti is that always when release a new device is very sure that never are available, even the old one, I have probably since the G4 Instant was relese, I never never found available, I like the Ubiquiti brand, but I'm starting to get tired of this situation where you can never get what you want, because it's never available and the page suggests you buy a comparable version that costs 5 times more... I install a lot of Ubiquiti equipment. First with the USG's and lately the Dreamachine Pro's. I've been running the UDR for a couple of weeks now at home and love it. It works everywhere within my 1200 Sq ft home and on my lot. I do plan eventually to run cameras, but will probably install a USG and Cloud Key, which I've done at another house (which works great, there we are also running a Connect screen for monitoring) plus play around with Talk. If you just need a great router for basic router needs, go with the UDR. Anything more go with the Dream Machine Pro, especially if you are using it for your small business (I install them in 100 room hotels). Great video, Chris. This device is a great way for people to get introduced into Ubiquiti.

Wanted to ask in general, but will ask you, because your comment. I wanted to install it in a Camp-site, with 12 APs and approx 200 or more connected clients. The thing is, I already have a strong Mikrotik managing the network (hot-spot with radius manager). I don't really need a router (UDR), but wanted a "UniFi controller", already installed in a RaspberryPi because old PC was broken. So, do you think this could be a good idea (the UDR)? or shall I use an external PC (like now, in a Linux server with UniFi Controller in it)? thanks.
@bodhiench
@bodhiench Жыл бұрын
@@juancarlosvidaldevesa9012 I'd have to ask why you would want a UniFi controller if you're already using a Microtik to manage the network. If you don't need a router but you still want to run Ubiquiti AP's, consider getting the UniFi Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus. I've never ran the controller through a Raspberry Pi (it's a project I always wanted to try); If I did, I'd want to ensure I had backups ready to go and spare power supplies. With the Cloud Key Gen 2, I've got several deployed in hotels and homes and haven't had an issue. I'd consider the UDR more for home or small office; maybe running a spare access point or two (but not 12). And honestly, I would recommend the Dream Machine Pro.

@@bodhiench glad to hear.... That's what I'm thinking about. CLOUD KEY GEN2+. I'm actually using a Raspberry PI, because was the only miniPC I could use (emergency, as previous PC is dead) for fixing temporary the issue. Would also check the DMPro. Your question.... I use the Mikrotik router doing the hard job (dhcp, hot-spot, radius manager...) because is a non free wireless site. So requires tickets with username/password for each kind of connection (day, week, month....). And ubiquiti AP because...... Are the best. Will consider both options you mentioned. Thanks a lot.
@bodhiench
@bodhiench Жыл бұрын
@@juancarlosvidaldevesa9012 Apologies for the delay - I didn't see your reply until today. You can do a ticket system with some of the Ubiquiti routers (I think it's just the Dream Machine Pro and the Special Edition). They also have the same functionality that you mentioned that the Microtik is doing. You can also set up both the DMP and DMP-SE so that anyone wanting to use the network can enter their credit card information. I've been playing around with it here and there, but I've not had serious time to invest in it - it's more of a curiosity thing... The ability is there, but as every system I've installed has been for hotels (which use either a captive portal or ticket) and homes, I've not had a need to use it. If I remember correctly, you can have funds get deposited into a PayPal Business account, it's just a matter of having both accounts configured correctly. One of the things I like about using the DMP's is the ability to get them on manually, by entering in their MAC address (some devices, and more often users, have difficulty figuring out the captive portal). I know that with Ruckus, it gets even easier because you can see the device that tried to sign in and what password they used. In the last few months I've installed a Ubiquiti NVR. I've used the Ubiquiti cameras before with the Cloud Key Gen2+ and with a DMP-SE, but I needed more cameras for one install than either would do alone, and the NVR was the ticket. All of my other sites use Hikvision save for one that uses Dahua. I am now a huge fan of the Ubiquity cameras, though if you absolutely need a PTZ (or one of the specialty cameras, like an LPR), then it's Hikvision (the Ubiquiti PTZ is 3x the cost than the Hikvisions I use).

I think the Protect system with the SD Card would be great for folks who just want something like the UniFi doorbell camera or a single camera watching a front door/lobby. As for throughput, one of the reviews I've read on it showed WiFi6 speeds going from 830Mbps IDS/IPS off, and 730Mbps with it on. I'll be helping to install one in a couple of weeks with a friend who has 1gb syncronis fiber, so we'll do a before/after test to see if there are any major differences over ethernet/wifi.

At first I really liked my Dream Router. However, it started randomly crashing. UI support is via email only and took a month to conclude it was a hardware issue. The RMA process was also difficult to get an advanced RMA for a warranty replacement. A month after deploying the replacement the same thing happened. Support promised another advanced RMA, but the RMA department denied it. I have been arguing with RMA for a week and they are digging their heals in because others have not returned their defective products. Despite the fact that I have, I'm still being treated like a criminal. The worst support and RMA I have dealt with. I am so done with Ubiquiti despite having already deployed a several of their products. Poor support I can deal with, but defective products and inability to replace them when still under the short warranty is the final straw. Don't buy the Dream Router.

I've been using the UDR since January (bought in the EA). Never had a problem, always stable, no crashes. Only use the network app. Since I live in Germany and in a fairly large modern new apartment, many walls here are made of concrete. This means that the signal strength in the apartment does not reach all rooms (>-80db). Therefore, I use with the UDR a mesh of 3(!) U6-Pro AP. These are connected via wireless uplink. Only in this way I really get in every room in every corner with good performance. In addition I use 3 switches (2 Flex-Mini and 1 8-lite-poe). As ISP I use a Vigor 166 as bridge modem and use the UDR with PPPoE dial-up. From my 500 Mbit I get 450 Mbit in the speedtest with ISP and all threat rules activated. Do not do the speed test via the UDR, the results are always lower than on a client (wired) due to the weak CPU.

So I have a UDM SE at my home and am running Network and Protect. I also have a condo in a nearby city that I would like to connect to. When I travel to that city I typically VPN into the UDM SE from my PC so I have access to cameras and a NAS drive on the network. My question is, can I set up a VPN tunnel between the UDM SE and the UDM Router in the condo and have the cameras I'd like to install in the condo record to the UDM SE? Basically I'd like the condo to look like a drop on the UDM SE network. ALso, I'd like the TVs in the condo look like they are on the same network as my Plex Server which is installed on the NAS drive on the UDM SE.

I have not been impressed with mine because it cannot handle 1G throughput (which my old USG could handle no problem). Here are some tests. Even a base install with no configuration topped out at about 675Mbps. Once you start doing some basic configurations it drops below 600 and enabling filtering brings it down to low 500's. Same here. Got UDR to replace the USG and it's pretty trash. On a 1 Gig line, without threat management, it was maxing out at 500-575 Mbps. Went back to the USG and back to getting 800-900Mbps. This is not something that is actively advertised (not mentioned on product page or data sheet) nor is it mentioned by the youtubers peddling the product. This seems to be a processor/ram limination. Got slightly better speeds after disabling Unifi Protect and only running the network service. On a 1 Gig line, UDR should be avoided (unless you don't care if you're only getting half the speed you're paying for) . I will be returning mine and will be upgrading to a UDM Pro SE.

I have the UDM. I acquired the UDR and tested it out and found that I was getting much less performance out of it than my UDM with Threat Detection and Management on. I ended up sending it back. What I DID like about the UDR though was the WiFi 6 Capabilities and throughput on the local network over the UDM. However, I could not justify the issues with connectivity outbound and inbound over what I currently had. The Software version on the UDR also seemed to be more buggy over the UDM but, that is to be expected since it has been out in a much less time-frame.

I just placed an order for a UDR+ plus a Access Point U6+ (early release) for roughly $35-49 more than the Synology AX6600AC would have cost me. I just needed for a modest apartment wifi system but the techie in me wants to learn all I can about the Unifi Networking System. Perhaps in a couple of years I'll upgrade to whatever replaces the dream machine pro in a few years.. The lack of 2.5gb ports bug me, but I currently don't have isp options above 1gb right now.

UDR works well for me. It's my first Unify product so good as a gateway drug. The only annoyance I've found is that with just a single camera (G3 flex) I can't scroll through the Protect history on my linux machine (11th gen NUC 32gig), but the IOS Protect app can scroll through video history on an iPad with no problem. Has anybody else had this problem?

I've not had an issue like this on the DMP-SE or Cloudkey Gen2+... Close, when we were hitting camera limits (which went away when we upgraded to the Ubiquiti NVR). It may be a glitch with the Linux if you're not having issues with the iOS. I've been using a wired $49 Android box to a monitor, and it works pretty well, better than the Connect Monitor (which, if you don't need touch screen, I wouldn't recommend).

Hi, I've been using one of these 2 months while I escape winter in Florida. I have UDM Pro at home as well. I am very impressed with the UDR, and am going to bring it home. I was easily able to setup VPN clients on my PIA accounts, several of them in fact. They can be accessed. by WiFi or dedicated wired points on the router. So, how come my much more expensive 'professional' UDM can't do this simple trick???

Snagged a UDR. My gigabit line (PC to ISP modem) gets 920-940mbit solid. No issue with speed using my old Linksys EA9500. Got my UDR running. It was stuck at 600mbit! had to turn off traffic inspection - and it BARELY hits 800mbit. It seems this can't do true gigabit? I've tried Jumbo frame on/off also. Pretty disappointed so far. I snagged 3 AP's. 5 switches. UDR - and it falls short. Any suggestions/advice? Thanks guys!

13:14 the reason you are getting those speeds are two fold. 1. The speed test is not accurate, it never has been. 2. There is a strong possibility that you are doing an internal (not external) speed test.

Had an EA unit had to RMA it. Got a Replacement and had to RMA it as well. Now I am on my third one and it's been stable for 2 months. For those wondering I had a problem where the unit would go completely unresponsive and just stop routing traffic. All my devices would go offline and I would have to manually reboot it. Then it would work for a few days and then would have work again.

Have a listen to the fan noise. This isn’t a product you want in a quiet room, which is a shame at it would otherwise be a good upgrade for an old USG, older AP and separate cloud key setup that is a popular home user setup.

Based on your video, I bought a UDR. Afer using it, it freezes about once per week. I have been working with Ubiquiti Support for a few months, but they haven't been able to solve the problem. Has your UDR frozen up on you? As in, you can't even login to it and it can't access the internet. I RMA'd my first UDR due to this issue and I received a new one. The second UDR is also freezing randomly. The only way for me to get my UDR working when it freezes is to unplug it and plug it back in.
